Neither option is cheaper for everyone. Game Pass can cost less if you play several games in its library during the months you subscribe and use the plan’s other included features. Buying games individually can cost less if you stick to a few titles, buy during sales, or want to keep access regardless of changes to the subscription library. Compare your own game list, plan price, and playing schedule—not the size of the catalog.
How to compare the costs fairly
Choose a period—such as the next six or twelve months—and compare the cost of playing the games you actually expect to play over that period.

- List the games you realistically plan to play. Avoid counting titles you might try but are unlikely to start.
- Check each game against your plan and platform. Confirm that it is currently included in the relevant Game Pass plan, region, and platform. The library changes, and Xbox says titles, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform (Xbox Game Pass plan comparison).
- Add the subscription charges for the months you need. Use the price shown for your account at checkout, and count only the months when you need active access. Recurring billing continues until canceled; review the renewal date if you plan to stop subscribing.
- Price the same games for individual purchase. Compare like-for-like editions and use discounts only if they are available to you. Xbox offers discounts on selected games and add-ons, not every title (Xbox Game Pass plan comparison; Microsoft Store Xbox games).
- Account for useful plan features separately. If you would otherwise pay for online console multiplayer, or you genuinely use cloud gaming or member benefits, those features may add value. Do not treat a feature as savings if you would not use it.
- Decide how long you need access. A subscription provides access while a title is included and your plan is active. Buying a game is the more direct comparison if you want to keep playing it without depending on its continued presence in the library.
The basic calculation is:
- Game Pass cost for the period: your actual monthly plan price × the number of months you need access.
- Individual-purchase cost: the current prices of the games on your list, with only discounts you can actually use.
Compare those totals, then consider useful features and access duration as separate benefits. There is no reliable universal break-even number of games: a few full-price new releases can cost more than several discounted older games, and the result changes with the plan, subscription months, regional price, and catalog.
What the US price snapshot can—and cannot—tell you
At the time checked on October 7, 2026, the official US Xbox Store displayed the following monthly prices. These are dated US reference prices, not guaranteed rates for every account or a promise of future pricing.

When Game Pass is more likely to cost less
- You plan to play multiple games that are currently in your specific plan’s library.
- You will play those titles during the same paid months rather than subscribing for long stretches when you are not using the library.
- You value included features such as online console multiplayer or cloud gaming on supported devices, and would otherwise pay for or use them.
- You are comfortable with access depending on an active subscription and a changing catalog.
Check which features apply to your plan: the plans do not all include the same benefits. Xbox describes selected day-one games, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, in-game benefits, Rewards, and selected game or add-on discounts, with features varying by plan (Xbox Game Pass plan comparison).

When buying games individually is more likely to cost less
- You mostly replay a small set of games or already know which titles you want.
- You can wait for sales and buy at prices that fit your budget.
- You do not need a subscription’s other features.
- You want to keep access to a game without relying on its continued inclusion in a subscription library.
For a purchase comparison, use the price of the exact game and edition you intend to play. The Microsoft Store lists Xbox games for purchase (Microsoft Store Xbox games); check your preferred store and platform for the price available to you.
Check catalog and release assumptions before subscribing
Game Pass is a changing library, not a guarantee that every game—or every new release—will be included in every plan. Xbox describes day-one access as applying to selected games, with Call of Duty excluded from that general claim. In an April 21, 2026 announcement, Xbox said future Call of Duty releases would not arrive in Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; it said those new titles would be added during the following holiday season, about a year later. Call of Duty games already in the library would remain available, according to the announcement (Xbox Wire announcement, April 21, 2026).

Because library availability and plan details can change, verify the specific title and terms before building your budget around them.

Use Game Pass when the games you will actually play during the subscription months, plus features you genuinely value, justify the recurring cost. Buy individually when your likely game list is short, discounted purchase prices work out lower, or durable access matters more than sampling a changing library. If you are unsure, compare a defined period and your real shortlist; do not assume the largest catalog or the lowest advertised monthly offer will be the cheapest choice for you.
