Microsoft is bringing a growing selection of Xbox-owned games to PlayStation 5, but Phil Spencer’s February 2024 explanation was not a promise that every Xbox game would launch on PS5. Microsoft began with four mature, community-focused titles, then expanded the policy to additional releases such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War: Reloaded and Fable.
The practical change is broader access to selected games. It is not the same as putting Xbox Game Pass, the entire Xbox catalog or every first-party release on PlayStation.
What Spencer said in February 2024
In Microsoft’s February 15, 2024 Xbox Business Update, the company said four previously Xbox-exclusive games would move to rival platforms. Microsoft described them as mature titles with established communities that had largely reached their potential on Xbox and PC. The announcement is documented in the official Xbox Business Update.
Spencer’s explanation was strategic rather than a declaration that Xbox hardware was ending. Releasing selected games elsewhere could expand their audiences, strengthen multiplayer communities and create additional software revenue to support future development. In his contemporary Verge interview, he left open the possibility of more ports while making clear that Microsoft was not promising every game for PlayStation.

The original announcement therefore had two boundaries: it concerned four chosen games, and it preserved Xbox console, PC, cloud and Game Pass as parts of Microsoft’s broader ecosystem.
The original four games
Contemporary reporting and subsequent platform announcements identified the first wave as follows. PS5 and Nintendo Switch were both involved, depending on the title.
- Grounded
- Sea of Thieves
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Pentiment
These games were not presented as a test that automatically applied to Starfield, Halo or every future Bethesda and Xbox Game Studios project. Their established communities and relatively mature life cycles were central to the initial rationale.

Spencer’s position allowed Microsoft to consider additional ports without creating a universal release policy. In 2024, public messaging treated Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle as having no announced PS5 plans at that point, while Spencer declined to rule out every future platform decision. GameSpot’s contemporaneous summary captured that distinction, and its Starfield coverage made the same qualification.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle later received a PS5 announcement, demonstrating that “not announced” is not the same as “permanently impossible.” It still does not make an unannounced game confirmed.

How the strategy expanded
Later announcements gave the 2024 comments a broader practical meaning. Xbox’s 2025 Games Showcase recap included additional Xbox-owned releases and PS5 plans. Xbox’s January 2026 Developer Direct recap and the accompanying Fable overview listed Fable for PS5 as well as Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud, Steam and Game Pass Ultimate, with an autumn 2026 release window.
Microsoft’s 2026 corporate messaging also describes Xbox as spanning console, PC, cloud, mobile and other screens. The “We Are Xbox” statement and “Next 100 Days: Xbox Reset” support the interpretation that Xbox is increasingly a games-and-services ecosystem, not only a console box.

Why Microsoft publishes on a competing console
A larger audience
A PS5 version reaches PlayStation owners without asking them to buy Xbox hardware. That increases the addressable audience for each selected game.
More software revenue
Every additional storefront can generate sales, although the economics differ from an Xbox sale because the platform holder takes a fee. Spencer discussed that trade-off in the Verge interview; the precise split is not a universal rule for every product or transaction.

Healthier multiplayer communities
Games such as Sea of Thieves and Grounded rely on active communities. More players can improve matchmaking, bring in friends and extend a game’s useful life, subject to each title’s cross-play and account rules.
Better returns on expensive development
Microsoft owns Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Selling selected games across more storefronts can help spread development and marketing costs over a larger customer base.
Less dependence on console sales
Microsoft’s stated direction emphasizes reaching players across devices. That makes software, subscriptions and engagement more important than selling every game only through Xbox hardware, while leaving Xbox consoles and services in the ecosystem.
Does this make Microsoft a third-party publisher?
Microsoft already publishes cross-platform properties including Minecraft, Call of Duty, Overwatch and Diablo. Its increased PS5 publishing makes it behave more like a major publisher as well as a platform holder.
The stronger, evidence-based description is “a platform-agnostic gaming ecosystem,” not “Xbox is dead.” Microsoft continues to market Xbox consoles, Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PC integration and accessories. No cited announcement says the company is abandoning Xbox hardware.

What a PS5 owner actually gets
- A native PS5 version of selected Xbox-published games.
- PlayStation features supported by the individual title.
- Cross-play with Xbox and PC players where the game enables it.
- Potentially larger multiplayer populations.
A PS5 purchase does not generally provide Xbox Game Pass, automatic access to the Xbox catalog, Xbox Play Anywhere ownership, guaranteed day-one releases or Xbox-specific platform features. Game Pass and an individual PS5 game purchase are different products.
What is still unconfirmed
Do not treat the following as confirmed PS5 releases without a newer first-party announcement:
- Starfield
- The Elder Scrolls VI
- Halo: The Master Chief Collection
- Forza Motorsport
- Any unreleased Xbox project not listed in an official platform announcement
“Not ruled out” describes an option Spencer discussed; it is not a release commitment. Game status should always be checked against a current Xbox announcement or store listing.
Does a PS5 owner still need an Xbox?
Choose PS5 if you want selected Xbox games
A PS5 can now cover many Xbox-owned releases while preserving PlayStation’s own catalog and ecosystem. This is the simplest route if you want only particular Microsoft games and are comfortable buying them separately.

Choose Xbox if Game Pass is central

Compare the ecosystem, not just exclusives
- Check where your friends play and which games support cross-play.
- Compare Game Pass or PlayStation Plus with the way you actually buy games.
- Check day-one availability, backward compatibility and PC integration.
- Consider digital-library lock-in, storage and accessory costs.
- Verify cross-save and cross-progression for each specific game.
Microsoft’s shift makes PS5 more attractive to players interested in Xbox-owned software, but Xbox still has meaningful service and integration advantages.
