No legitimate public Xbox or Microsoft feature can turn another player’s gamertag into their current IP address. An Xbox gamertag is a display identifier, not a network address. “Xbox IP resolver” websites are unofficial third-party databases or claims of databases, and any result may be historical, stale, inaccurate, or associated with a different connection.
If you are trying to find your own Xbox IP, you can view your console’s local network address in Xbox settings. If another player says they have your IP, do not click their links or attempt to retaliate: save evidence, block and report them, and contact your ISP if your connection is being disrupted.
Research status: based on Xbox, Microsoft, PlayFab, FTC, and IC3 material reviewed through August 10, 2026.
The short answer
Xbox does not provide a public gamertag-to-live-IP lookup. Microsoft’s documented Xbox player, profile, presence, People, and multiplayer-session interfaces expose information such as gamertags, XUIDs, relationships, presence, achievements, shared content, and session data—not another player’s readable public IP address.

That conclusion applies to the public Xbox service interface. It does not mean Microsoft never handles IP addresses internally for account security, networking, fraud prevention, or other services. It means an ordinary Xbox user cannot legitimately enter a gamertag into an official Microsoft tool and retrieve that player’s current internet address.
Third-party services marketed as Xbox IP resolvers should not be confused with Xbox Live. They may claim to store associations between usernames and IP addresses, but the public reader generally cannot verify when the address was observed, how it was collected, whether it was collected lawfully, or whether it still belongs to the player.
What an Xbox gamertag is—and what it is not
A gamertag is the name other players see on Xbox. Xbox services separately use an XUID, or Xbox user identifier, to identify an account internally. Microsoft describes the XUID as an identifier that is not intended to be human-readable.
| Item | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Gamertag | A player-facing display name. It can change and may include a numeric suffix when a chosen name is not unique. |
| XUID | An Xbox service identifier used by applications and services. It is not an IP address. |
| IP address | A network address associated with a connection, router, carrier gateway, VPN, server, or other network endpoint. |
| Secure device address | An opaque, protected device or session value used in certain Xbox multiplayer contexts—not a readable public IP directory. |
The relationship between a gamertag and XUID is therefore not equivalent to a relationship between a gamertag and IP address. Microsoft’s Xbox data-type documentation, player object documentation, and documentation for People and presence do not document a public player IP field.

What does an Xbox IP resolver actually claim to do?
The term is used loosely for two different things:
- A database lookup: a site claims it has stored a past association between a gamertag or other account identifier and an IP address.
- A capture or logging system: a separate direct connection, game session, party connection, or visited link may have observed network information and later associated it with a username.
Neither description means that Xbox is answering a live lookup request. Some secondary coverage describes resolver services as though a gamertag directly resolves to a current address. That wording confuses a third-party record with an official, real-time Xbox service.
It is not appropriate to provide instructions for packet capture, IP logging, phishing links, network scanning, or other methods intended to expose another player’s address. Those techniques can facilitate stalking, doxxing, harassment, and distributed denial-of-service attacks. Microsoft’s Xbox Community Standards prohibit doxxing, DDoS attacks, interfering with another person’s network or device, and sharing links that promote prohibited activity.
Why a resolver result may be wrong or misleading
Even if a third-party site displays a result, that result does not prove that:
- the address is current;
- the address belongs to the named player;
- the player is online now;
- the address is the player’s home connection;
- the address was obtained lawfully or accurately; or
- the location shown beside it identifies the player.
A public IP can be dynamic and may change over time. The address may have belonged to a previous subscriber, or it may represent a router, mobile carrier gateway, VPN endpoint, business, school, or shared ISP infrastructure. An Xbox connection may also use IPv4, IPv6, or both, so an IPv4-only record may not describe the complete connection.

Modern gamertags create additional ambiguity. A player can change their name, and a chosen name may carry a numeric suffix. An old spelling, truncated name, or similarly named account can produce a false match. A gamertag is not a permanent network identifier.
Does Xbox show another player’s IP in their profile?
No—not as a standard player-visible profile field. Microsoft’s privacy material says Xbox users may see information such as a gamertag, game and play statistics, achievements, presence, shared content, and other activity controlled by privacy settings. It does not describe another player’s IP address as information normally shown in a profile.
Likewise, Xbox’s public People and presence documentation describes social relationships, status, activity, and player data. It does not establish a public gamertag-to-IP directory. Microsoft may process IP addresses for its services, but that is different from exposing one user’s IP to another user through Xbox.

The secure-device-address documentation shows an opaque value that can be formatted and used by multiplayer services. It should not be interpreted as a readable public IP address or as evidence that a gamertag lookup exists.
Can a game expose an IP even when Xbox does not?
Sometimes network information can be exposed by the way a particular game or communication service is designed. The important distinction is the connection architecture:
- Dedicated-server architecture: players connect to a game server instead of directly to one another. This can reduce the need for players to learn each other’s network addresses.
- Relay architecture: a relay handles traffic between players. Microsoft’s multiplayer guidance recommends relay-based designs to reduce IP leaks and related risks.
- Peer-to-peer architecture: players may communicate directly. Depending on the implementation, direct connectivity can expose network metadata to participants.
- Legacy or game-specific behavior: older titles and peer-hosted sessions may have different exposure risks from current server-based games.
Microsoft’s PlayFab guidance on direct peer connectivity explicitly warns that direct connections can expose IP addresses and that exposed addresses may be abused to attack players. Its Xbox and PC multiplayer design guidance discusses relay-based approaches intended to avoid this problem.
That is why both of these statements are too broad:
- “Xbox always hides IP addresses.” Protection depends on the game, platform, service, and whether a direct peer connection is involved.
- “Joining Xbox Party Chat always leaks your IP.” That is outdated and overbroad.
What about Xbox Party Chat?
Microsoft announced dedicated relay infrastructure for Party Chat in 2015. A later report quoting an Xbox engineer said Microsoft was phasing out peer-to-peer Party Chat connections. Xbox has therefore moved Party Chat and related communications toward server- or relay-based designs.
The safest current wording is that IP exposure depends on the game, platform, party configuration, third-party services, and whether a direct peer connection is involved. Party Chat protections do not guarantee that every third-party game uses the same networking model. A player might be protected in Party Chat while participating in a title that uses a different peer-to-peer system.

Can an IP address reveal someone’s home address?
Usually, no. An IP address may offer an approximate network location or identify an ISP, but it is not equivalent to a precise street address and does not, by itself, prove who was using the connection.
The apparent location may refer to:
- the general area served by an ISP;
- a router or business rather than a residence;
- a mobile carrier’s gateway, which may be far from the user;
- a VPN endpoint;
- a school, workplace, or public network; or
- a shared address used by multiple customers.
Microsoft explains that location inferred from an IP can be less precise, such as city- or postal-code-level information, and warns that mobile routing can make the apparent location differ from the user’s actual location. Dynamic reassignment also means an old database entry may identify a previous subscriber rather than the current one. Treat a displayed city, ISP, or map pin as an estimate—not a home address or identity verification.
How to find your own Xbox console IP
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, use this current menu path:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Network settings.
- Select Advanced settings.
The screen normally shows the console’s local IPv4 address and may also show IPv6 information, subnet mask, gateway, DNS servers, and MAC address. Menu labels can change with console software updates.
Important: the address on this screen is normally the Xbox’s address on your home or local network. It is not necessarily the public IP address that websites on the internet see. A private address may look like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x; those are local-network ranges, not the public address assigned to your internet connection.
To find the public address, check the router’s Internet or WAN status page, or use a reputable IP-check page from a device connected to the same network. Do not manually replace the console’s IP settings with a random address just because a guide calls it your “Xbox IP.” Xbox’s network configuration commonly receives settings automatically through the router using DHCP.
For connection problems, Xbox network settings include tests for network connection, multiplayer connection, NAT type, IP settings, DNS settings, and alternate MAC address. Use the current Xbox networking and port support rather than applying a generic port-forwarding recipe to every router.
How to see sign-in IP information for your own Microsoft account
Microsoft’s Recent activity page can show IP addresses associated with certain account activity, especially unusual sign-ins. This is account-owner information and is not a way to look up another player’s gamertag.

- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Review the activity at Microsoft’s Recent activity support page. If an entry is unfamiliar, secure the account, change the password, review security methods, and enable multifactor authentication. The displayed location can be misleading for mobile connections because a carrier may route traffic through a different region.

What to do if someone says, “I have your IP”
Do not assume the claim is either completely harmless or proof that the person knows your address. It may be a bluff, a screenshot of an old database record, an ISP or city estimate, or a genuine indication that network information was exposed during a particular connection. In every case, the safest response is defensive rather than retaliatory.
- Stop engaging. Do not argue, threaten the player, or attempt to identify their IP in return.
- Do not click links. A link promising to verify your account, protect your IP, show a clip, or remove you from a resolver database may be an IP logger or phishing page.
- Do not install software. Never download “IP protection,” “resolver removal,” “verification,” or anti-DDoS tools sent by an opponent.
- Protect credentials. Do not provide your Microsoft password, payment information, one-time security code, recovery code, or browser session.
- Preserve evidence. Save screenshots, messages, the gamertag, timestamps, game title, party or session details, and any visible network disruption.
- Mute and block the player. This limits further contact while preserving the evidence needed for a report.
- Report the relevant content. Report the message, profile, gamertag, or behavior through Xbox using the current reporting tools described by Xbox Support.
- Contact your ISP if service is disrupted. If your internet connection becomes unusable, tell the ISP that you suspect a DDoS attack and provide the time and evidence. The ISP is usually the first technical escalation point because the attack targets the internet connection, not merely the Xbox profile.
- Escalate serious incidents. For an ongoing or serious DDoS incident, consider reporting it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center in addition to contacting the ISP.
If you clicked a suspicious link or installed a file, update your operating system and security software, run a security scan, change passwords from a clean device if possible, enable multifactor authentication, and report the suspected phishing attempt. The FTC phishing guidance explains why unexpected links and requests for credentials are warning signs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you change your gamertag?
A gamertag change is not a guaranteed IP-removal or network-security solution. It may change the label displayed by a third-party database, but it does not automatically:
- change your public IP;
- delete a historical third-party record;
- invalidate an address that was already captured;
- stop a service from associating another identifier with your account; or
- prevent direct network exposure in a particular game.
Address the underlying issue instead: stop interacting with the harasser, report the abuse, secure your account, and work with your ISP if the connection is attacked. Ask the ISP whether it can assign a new address or take other protective measures; do not assume that rebooting the Xbox or changing a gamertag will accomplish this.
Should you use a VPN?
A VPN can change the address visible to some internet services, but it is not a universal Xbox privacy fix and does not make a player anonymous. Depending on the VPN and game, it can add latency, cause NAT or matchmaking problems, reduce performance, and introduce another company that must be trusted with traffic and account-related metadata.
Use a VPN only for a legitimate privacy or networking purpose, follow the game and Xbox terms, and do not treat it as a guaranteed defense against every peer-to-peer connection. Xbox Community Standards also prohibit using VPNs or similar tools to bypass regional purchase restrictions.
Quick answers by goal

| Review your Microsoft account sign-in IPs | Use the account’s Recent activity page. |
| Fix NAT or multiplayer problems | Run Xbox network tests and follow current Xbox Support guidance. |
| Check a resolver result | Treat it as unverified third-party data. It may be historical, stale, reassigned, or unrelated. |
| Respond to “I have your IP” | Save evidence, block and report the player, and contact your ISP if your connection is disrupted. |
What search results and resolver sites get wrong
Some guides present XResolver-like services as if they were official Xbox utilities or live gamertag lookups. Others recommend IP loggers, Wireshark, Nmap, packet capture, or scanning. Those instructions blur the line between understanding a security risk and enabling someone to target another player.
Resolver-branded pages should also be treated as untrusted websites. A page that asks for Xbox credentials, payment details, browser extensions, downloads, or security codes is a serious warning sign. Search results themselves can lead to misleading support and scam pages; the FTC recommends checking unexpected claims and avoiding requests for sensitive information. See the FTC’s guidance on scammy search results and Microsoft’s support-scam guidance.

The central technical distinction is simple: an Xbox gamertag is an account-facing identifier, while an IP address belongs to a network connection. A third-party database may claim to link them, but that does not make the link official, current, complete, or reliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone get my IP from my Xbox gamertag alone?
There is no legitimate public Xbox feature that reveals a current IP from a gamertag alone. Network information could be exposed in some game-specific peer-to-peer or third-party situations, but that is different from an official gamertag lookup.
Is XResolver an official Xbox service?
No. Resolver-branded services are unofficial third-party sites or databases. Their results should not be treated as authoritative, real-time Xbox data, or proof of a player’s identity or location.
Does changing my gamertag remove my IP?
No. A gamertag change does not automatically change your public IP, delete historical records, or prevent a game from using a different networking architecture. Report the abuse and address the network issue instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs Xbox Party Chat guaranteed to hide my IP?
Xbox has moved Party Chat and related communications toward relay-based infrastructure, but exposure can still depend on the game, platform, party configuration, third-party services, and whether a direct peer connection is involved. Do not assume every game uses Party Chat’s networking model.
What if someone sends me my city or ISP?
That information is not proof that they know your home address or identity. IP geolocation is approximate, and the address may represent a carrier gateway, VPN, business, shared network, or previous subscriber. Still save the evidence, block and report the player, and contact your ISP if service is disrupted.
Can I use a VPN to solve an Xbox IP threat?
A VPN may change the address visible to some services, but it is not a universal fix. It can add latency, create NAT and matchmaking issues, and requires trust in the VPN provider. Follow Xbox and game rules and contact your ISP for suspected DDoS activity.
What should I do if I clicked an IP-logger or suspicious Xbox link?
Do not enter more information. Update security software, scan the device, change any potentially exposed passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and report the phishing attempt. If you downloaded software, treat the device as potentially compromised until the scan and account-security steps are complete.
