On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the MAC address you need depends on how the console connects: use Wired MAC address for Ethernet and Wireless MAC address for Wi‑Fi. Find both at Settings → General → Network settings → Advanced settings. To remove a manually entered override, choose Alternate MAC address → Clear → Restart. Clearing Alternate MAC does not permanently rewrite the console’s built-in network addresses.
What an Xbox MAC address is
MAC means Media Access Control. It is an identifier for a network interface on the local network, commonly displayed as six pairs of hexadecimal characters separated by hyphens or colons. Xbox exposes separate identifiers for its Ethernet and Wi‑Fi interfaces.
A MAC address is not an internet-wide identity. Your router and other local-network equipment use it to distinguish devices; internet services generally see the router’s public-facing connection instead. It is also different from an IP address, console serial number, gamertag, and Microsoft account ID. Microsoft explains the Xbox networking use of MAC addresses in its Xbox networking Q&A.
How to find the MAC address on Xbox One and Series X|S
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system, then select Settings.
- Choose General.
- Open Network settings.
- Select Advanced settings.
- Read Wired MAC address and Wireless MAC address.
Copy every character exactly, including letters, numbers, and separators. Valid hexadecimal letters run from A through F; any other letter signals a copying error. Microsoft’s advanced network settings guidance covers this configuration area. Dashboard wording can vary slightly after software updates or by region.

Which address should you give a router or network administrator?

This matters for router allowlists, dormitory and campus registration, workplace networks, and hotel systems. Registering the correct number does not necessarily complete a captive-portal login: the network may also require a browser terms page, account authentication, payment, device approval, or a gaming-device procedure. Do not submit the router’s MAC address instead of the Xbox’s.
Alternate MAC address: what it means
Alternate MAC address is a manually entered value that makes the Xbox present a different network address. Microsoft describes it primarily for restricted networks that admit only pre-approved device identities. The field is normally empty and is not the ordinary place to obtain the console’s Wired or Wireless MAC.

Most home users should leave Alternate MAC alone. It is relevant when you previously entered an override, a network administrator supplied one, or a managed network requires the console to match a pre-approved identity.
How to clear Alternate MAC safely
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system → Settings.
- Go to General → Network settings → Advanced settings.
- Select Alternate MAC address.
- Choose Clear.
- Confirm the restart.
The console must restart for the change to apply. It then uses its standard interface identity unless another network-management setting intervenes. Bethesda’s Xbox instructions are documented here. Clearing the field removes the override; it does not permanently alter the built-in Wired or Wireless MAC.

Does clearing Alternate MAC fix internet problems?
Only in specific circumstances. If a custom alternate value is wrong or conflicts with a managed network, removing it can restore authentication. If the field was already empty, Microsoft says the operation mainly forces a full reboot; a normal restart provides that reboot without treating the issue as a MAC reset.
For a restart alone, use the guide’s Restart console command (the exact guide position can change with dashboard updates). Clearing Alternate MAC will not by itself repair bad Wi‑Fi credentials, weak signal, DNS or DHCP failures, router firmware, service outages, blocked ports, double NAT, carrier-grade NAT, or faulty hardware.

What to expect after clearing it
- The Xbox restarts and reconnects using its normal interface identity.
- A managed network may require the console to be approved again.
- Your router may assign a different private IP address through DHCP, but that is not guaranteed.
- Wi‑Fi credentials might need to be entered again if other network settings were also reset; clearing Alternate MAC alone should not be described as an automatic wipe of every saved network.
- NAT status can remain unchanged when the cause is router topology, port restrictions, ISP carrier-grade NAT, or an Xbox service issue.
A troubleshooting sequence that avoids unnecessary resets
- Confirm the interface. Check whether the console is using Ethernet or Wi‑Fi and register the matching MAC.
- Restart the Xbox normally. This is the appropriate first reboot when no custom alternate value exists.
- Restart the modem or router. Follow its manufacturer’s power-cycle procedure; this addresses connection state, DHCP, and router issues, not the Xbox MAC itself.
- Clear a configured Alternate MAC. Do this when you entered one previously or a network administrator directed you to.
- Verify registration. Return to Advanced settings, compare the displayed value character-for-character, and confirm that the network has not retained an old console or interface.
- Test another network. A phone hotspot can separate a home-router problem from a console problem, but data limits, NAT behavior, carrier restrictions, and compatibility vary.
- Escalate to the right party. Contact the router or ISP provider for a home-only failure, the managed-network administrator for hotel, school, employer, or landlord networks, and Xbox Support when multiple networks fail or the console cannot detect an interface.
Common misunderstandings
“Clearing MAC gives the Xbox a new permanent MAC.”
No. It removes a manually configured Alternate MAC and restarts the console; it does not rewrite the built-in Wired or Wireless addresses.
“Every Xbox connection failure is a MAC problem.”
No. Signal quality, passwords, DHCP, DNS, NAT, firewall rules, service availability, and ISP conditions are frequent causes.

“Clearing MAC deletes all network settings.”
That is not established by the documented procedure. Treat broader loss of saved networks as possible only when other settings were reset, not as a guaranteed result of clearing the alternate field.
“MAC filtering is strong security.”
It is an access-control convenience, not a substitute for strong Wi‑Fi encryption, a secure password, current router firmware, and sensible guest-network separation. Someone with local network access may observe or spoof a MAC address.

Xbox 360 note
The procedure above targets Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox 360 menus and hardware configurations differ, especially among models and wireless-adapter setups, so do not assume the current Advanced settings path applies unchanged.
Privacy and sharing
A MAC address is not a password and does not normally grant account access, but avoid posting it publicly when unnecessary. Give it to a router administrator or managed-network operator when registration requires it, and label whether it is Wired or Wireless.
