The Xbox handheld interface that first appeared under the name Xbox full screen experience is now an official Windows feature called Xbox mode. It is no longer limited to the ROG Xbox Ally: Microsoft began rolling it out to Windows 11 PCs in select markets on April 30, 2026. On a supported handheld, you enable it in Windows Settings rather than downloading a separate Xbox mode installer.
Availability still depends on your Windows version, region, device and rollout status. Here is how to check, enable and navigate it—and what to do if the setting is missing.
What happened to the leaked Xbox handheld interface?
The feature was originally called Xbox full screen experience (FSE). Microsoft later renamed it Xbox mode in an April 3, 2026 Windows Insider build. It debuted on the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, then expanded to other Windows handhelds in preview programs. Microsoft began a broader rollout to Windows 11 PCs in select markets on April 30, 2026, including laptops, desktops and tablets. The original leak is now historical context, not the current way to get the feature. Microsoft’s Insider announcement documents the name change; Xbox Wire’s rollout announcement describes wider availability.

It brings a game library and recently played titles to the foreground, while Windows remains available underneath. It is a launcher and interface—not a new operating system or a way to run Xbox console games on PC hardware.

Who can use Xbox mode?
Microsoft’s support guidance specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and availability in a supported market. The feature is intended for supported Windows devices, including gaming handhelds, but Microsoft does not provide a permanent promise that every model or region will receive it at the same time. Having Windows 11 alone does not guarantee that the Xbox mode setting will appear.
Early access was more involved: initial previews required Windows Insider enrollment, and the November 2025 expansion also required access to the Xbox Insiders PC Gaming preview. Those programs are not a universal prerequisite now that Microsoft has started the official rollout. If your device is not yet included, preview enrollment may be an option, but Insider builds can be less stable than regular Windows releases.
Microsoft first expanded FSE beyond the ROG Xbox Ally to additional handhelds, including MSI Claw models, with further OEM support to follow. Check the device itself rather than assuming a particular ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw or other Windows handheld is eligible. - Open Start → Settings → System → About and check that the device is running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
- Run Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and install available updates. Update the Xbox app through Microsoft Store as well.
- Open Start → Settings → Gaming → Xbox mode.
- Under Choose home app, select a supported gaming home app—normally Xbox.
- If you want the handheld to start in the gaming interface, turn on Enter Xbox mode on startup. Restart if Windows asks.
There is no separate Xbox mode executable to download in the normal rollout. Windows exposes the feature through Settings; the Xbox app and relevant launchers still need to be installed and kept up to date. Microsoft says the startup option can limit background activity after sign-in, but that does not guarantee a particular frame-rate or battery-life gain.

How to enable it on a laptop, desktop or tablet
On other supported Windows 11 PCs, go to Start → Settings → Gaming → Xbox mode and turn on Enable Xbox mode. You can optionally turn on Show Xbox mode in Task View. Availability remains subject to the same Windows version, supported-market and rollout conditions. A controller-first full-screen interface may be less convenient than the desktop if you mainly use a mouse and keyboard.
How to enter Xbox mode and return to Windows
On a supported device, you can enter or switch to Xbox mode using any of these documented options:
- Press Win + F11.
- Press Win + G to open Game Bar, then use its settings to switch modes.
- Press Win + Tab and select Xbox mode in Task View.
- Use the Xbox button on a compatible controller.
- Enable Enter Xbox mode on startup to start there after signing in.
To return to the Windows desktop, press Win + F11 again, use Game Bar or Task View, or—on a touch device—swipe up from the bottom to open Task View and select the desktop. Switching modes does not normally require a reboot. Windows may offer a restart when you return to startup-optimized mode after using the desktop.

The Xbox app is the usual home app, and Xbox mode puts games and the library front and center. Microsoft’s preview documentation says it can surface Xbox, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere and installed games from other popular storefronts. That can make a handheld easier to use without reaching for small desktop controls, but it is not a guarantee that every launcher or game will be detected or launch cleanly.

A game may still need its own launcher. If a title is missing, check that the relevant storefront is installed, that the game is recognized by the Xbox app, and that you are signed into the expected accounts. Catalog access also depends on the game’s availability, region and any required subscription.
What Xbox mode does not do
- It does not replace Windows or remove access to the desktop.
- It does not make PC games compatible with Xbox console hardware.
- It does not include every game for free; Game Pass access depends on a subscription, region and catalog availability.
- It does not guarantee a performance, frame-rate or battery improvement in every game.
- It does not ensure perfect support for every third-party launcher or installed title.
- It does not turn an unsupported handheld into an officially supported ROG Xbox Ally.
Microsoft describes the experience as gaming-focused and says startup behavior can reduce background activity. Actual results depend on the device, firmware, drivers, power settings, game and apps running.

Xbox mode is built around one full-screen experience at a time, not desktop-style window management. Microsoft documents that only one window is displayed at once; multi-window apps may show only their most recent window, and apps without full-screen support may appear against a black background. Minimize and maximize controls, as well as some familiar desktop keyboard shortcuts, may not work as they do on the desktop. Task View lets you switch between open apps and games, but it is not a substitute for having several visible windows.

That makes the mode a good fit for a handheld used mainly for games and controller navigation. If you regularly manage files, install mods, browse extensively or work across several windows, keep the desktop workflow in mind and switch back when needed.

If the Xbox mode setting is missing
- Check the Windows version. You need Windows 11 24H2 or later; install the latest available Windows updates.
- Update the Xbox app. Open Microsoft Store and check for app updates.
- Restart and check again. A device may not show a newly available feature until updates are installed and Windows restarts.
- Consider region and rollout. The feature is limited to supported markets and has been rolling out in phases; not every eligible device necessarily gets the setting simultaneously.
- Check device eligibility. Microsoft’s documentation does not guarantee identical support for every model. Consult current guidance for your device rather than relying on a general Windows handheld label.
- Use preview enrollment only if appropriate. If you specifically want preview access, verify the current Windows Insider and Xbox Insider requirements. Preview software may be less stable, so it is not the default recommendation for a primary work or gaming device.
Avoid unofficial registry edits or modified system packages to force the setting on. If Xbox mode opens but the library looks incomplete, verify the relevant launcher and account, then update or repair the Xbox app before assuming the device is unsupported.
Do you need an ROG Xbox Ally to get it?
No. Xbox mode itself is no longer a reason to buy an ROG Xbox Ally: Microsoft has expanded the feature to supported Windows handhelds and other Windows 11 PCs. Try the official Settings route on your existing device first. Consider new hardware for its screen, controls, performance, battery, ergonomics and vendor support—not simply for access to the interface.
The ROG Xbox Ally family remains a purpose-built option. Xbox’s product page positions the devices as booting directly into Xbox mode and advertises three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with qualifying purchases. That bundle and its terms can vary, so check the regional product page; it does not change the fact that the mode is available beyond the Ally family.
