Microsoft’s November 14, 2024 Xbox update was a broad ecosystem release—not just an AI feature. It restored friend requests, introduced AI-assisted natural-language search, added modest console personalization controls, redesigned Xbox app Home on Windows, and expanded controller configuration and accessibility options.
Availability differed by platform and rollout stage, so not every feature appeared for every player at the same time.

Friend requests return to Xbox
The update restored a clearer distinction between friends and followers. A friendship is reciprocal: one player sends a request and the other approves it. Following remains a one-way relationship that lets a player receive updates about another account’s shared activity.

Existing connections were adjusted rather than uniformly converted. Players who had mutually added one another remained friends. If the connection had not been reciprocated, the relationship remained a follow instead of becoming a mutual friendship.
How to send or manage a friend request
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Open the People tab.
- View the Friends list to accept or delete requests.
- Search for another player to send a new request.
Social management was also available through the Xbox app on Windows, the Xbox mobile app, and xbox.com/play. Privacy and notification controls can affect how requests are sent or displayed. The earlier Insider preview documented these paths: Settings → Account → Privacy & online safety → Xbox privacy → View details & customize → Friends, followers & clubs, and Settings → Preferences → Notifications. AI-assisted search understands descriptive queries
Xbox search became more useful when players did not know a game’s exact title. Microsoft described the feature as an AI-powered search experience that interprets concepts and descriptive language, rather than as a chatbot or general-purpose assistant.

For example, a player could try queries such as:

The search also supports typos, shortcuts, synonyms, and emojis. It was available on Xbox consoles and in the Xbox app on Windows, with Microsoft announcing a rollout across all regions and supported languages.

Results are not guaranteed to be complete or universally relevant. They can depend on catalog metadata, region, platform compatibility, storefront availability, and whether a game has been delisted. Microsoft did not publish accuracy benchmarks, ranking details, model information, or training-data details in the announcement.
For better results, begin with a broad concept, then add one or two constraints such as platform, co-op, genre, or a specific mechanic. If the result is poor, try conventional keywords or search the exact title. Always check the game’s listing for platform and purchase or subscription availability.
The search had previously appeared in Xbox Insider testing in March 2024. Microsoft’s Insider release notes described earlier searches such as “cozy games” and “arcade racers.”
More practical personalization on Xbox consoles
The personalization additions were useful but limited in scope. Players could create gamerpics more easily from achievement art and screenshots, and could zoom and crop custom images when setting a home background.

These changes improved image selection and framing. They did not amount to a complete dashboard redesign, a new theme marketplace, or full control over the Xbox Home layout.
Because screenshots can contain usernames, messages, or other players’ information, review an image before using it as a public-facing gamerpic or background.
Xbox app on Windows gets a new Home experience
The redesigned Xbox app Home brought more content into one place, including Game Pass selections, Microsoft Store content, recommendations, news, free-to-play games, and deals.

Compact Mode also gained easier access to Jump back in, helping users return to recently played games without navigating through the app. Microsoft said the new Home experience would roll out over the following weeks after its Insider testing, so it was not necessarily available immediately to every Windows user.

The update did not make Game Pass a requirement for the broader Xbox changes. Friend requests, search, gamerpic tools, and controller configuration were not presented as subscription-exclusive features.

Several of the update’s most meaningful additions were in the Xbox Accessories app, particularly for Elite and Adaptive Controller users.
Trigger self-calibration
A guided trigger calibration tool became available for Xbox Wireless Controllers and Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 controllers. It was intended for minor trigger issues, but calibration is not a guaranteed repair for mechanical failure or a substitute for warranty service or replacement.

Thumbstick and external joystick remapping
Users could map thumbstick or external joystick directions to controller buttons or keyboard inputs. This applied to the Elite Series 2 and to external joysticks connected to the Xbox Adaptive Controller.

Mouse-input mapping
Thumbstick or joystick movement could be mapped to mouse cursor movement. Buttons could be assigned to left-, right-, or middle-mouse click. On PC, Microsoft specified that the controller must be connected by wire for this feature.
Hat-switch mapping
For external joysticks attached to an Xbox Adaptive Controller, a hat switch could be mapped to operate as the opposite stick. This provides additional flexibility for accessibility-focused control setups, but compatibility depends on the connected hardware and the configured profile.

How to check whether a feature is available
- Update the Xbox console and the Xbox app on Windows.
- On console, open the guide and check the People tab for friend requests.
- Open the Xbox Accessories app to look for trigger calibration and profile-remapping options.
- Check the Xbox app Home page and Compact Mode for the redesigned experience and Jump back in.
- If a feature is missing, consider rollout timing, device, account configuration, region, language, or hardware compatibility.
If a friend connection looks different, do not assume it was deleted: a previously non-reciprocal connection may now appear as a follower. If search returns unexpected games, refine the query or use an exact title search. Controller calibration should not be treated as a fix for physical damage.
What the update did not change
- AI search was not announced as a conversational gaming chatbot.
- Personalization did not provide complete control over the Xbox dashboard layout.
- Game Pass was not required for the general update features.
- Calibration did not guarantee a fix for broken triggers.
- All Xbox devices did not receive one identical patch or feature set.
- The Windows Home redesign was staged rather than instantly available to everyone.
Compatible hardware in context
The software update did not require buying new hardware. The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is relevant for advanced remapping and trigger calibration, while the Xbox Adaptive Controller supports the external-device configurations described above. A standard Xbox Wireless Controller is supported for the announced trigger calibration feature.
These are optional hardware paths, not prerequisites for friend requests, search, or console image personalization.
