If DVDs played on an Xbox One show comb-like edges during motion, the console may be passing or processing interlaced 480i material in a way that does not match your display. This is a reported playback-quality issue, not a confirmed defect affecting every Xbox One, disc, Blu-ray Player app version, or television. You can narrow down the cause by comparing the same scene on another player and display, while treating “inverse telecine” as a description of the symptom rather than a verified diagnosis.
What “not deinterlacing” looks like
Standard-definition DVD video can contain interlaced fields: alternating portions of two moments in time. When fields from different moments are combined incorrectly, moving vertical edges may look like a comb. The 2019-era AnandTech forum report associated with this query describes that kind of artifact on an Xbox One S playing television-originated animation DVDs. It does not establish how often the problem occurs or which component caused it.

| What you see | What it may indicate |
|---|---|
| Comb-like teeth on moving edges | Fields from different moments are being combined, or motion processing is mismatched. |
| Uniform softness without combing | Scaling, focus, or the disc transfer may be the issue rather than deinterlacing. |
| Repeated or uneven motion cadence | A film/video cadence or inverse-telecine mismatch is possible, but the available report does not verify this on your setup. |
| Black screen, dropouts, or “no signal” | An HDMI or display-synchronization problem, not evidence of a deinterlacing fault. |
What is—and is not—established about Xbox One DVDs
The available report uses terms such as “480i,” “inverse telecine,” and “reverse 3:2 pull-down.” Those are the forum user’s descriptions, not an independently verified Xbox technical diagnosis. No controlled comparison, representative sample, or authoritative Microsoft statement was found that confirms a DVD-specific deinterlacing behavior across Xbox One consoles.
Microsoft documentation confirming a dedicated deinterlacing or inverse-telecine switch in the Xbox One Blu-ray Player app was not located. App and console menus can change with updates, so inspect the controls installed on your system rather than assuming a setting is present or absent on every version.

Step-by-step troubleshooting
- Classify the artifact. Pause on a moving scene and determine whether you are seeing combing, softness, cadence judder, or signal loss. Only the first two field-related symptoms are directly relevant to the reported complaint.
- Try several scenes and discs. Check a fast pan, scrolling credits, and a different DVD. If only one title shows the problem, its video transfer or encoding may be involved.
- Check the installed Xbox software. Open the Blu-ray Player app and the console’s video/display settings, recording the options that are actually available. Do not expect a deinterlacing or inverse-telecine control solely because another DVD player offers one.
- Replay the same scene on another DVD player. Use the same television and HDMI input where practical. If the artifact changes, the comparison helps localize processing to the source player, display, or their interaction; it is an isolation step, not an Xbox-approved diagnostic procedure.
- Test another display if available. A television, projector, or monitor may apply its own deinterlacing when it receives an interlaced signal. The controls depend on the input format and connection. Epson documentation, for example, exposes deinterlacing options only for specified interlaced inputs.
- Document the setup before seeking support. Note the Xbox model (such as One S), Blu-ray Player app version, DVD title and region, display model, input type, and the scene where the artifact appears. This prevents a general symptom description from being mistaken for a universal hardware fault.
Why another DVD player can look different
DVD players do not all handle standard-definition video the same way. A Philips DVD-player manual documents selectable output modes that include progressive 720p as well as interlaced or upscaled options. Sony’s general DVD-player guidance likewise shows that switching between progressive and interlaced output is model-specific. These examples demonstrate variation among players; they do not document the Xbox One’s internal processing.
If you compare a dedicated player, check its own manual for:

- Progressive-scan output and the resolutions it supports.
- Whether the output is available over the connection you plan to use.
- Compatibility with your television or projector’s accepted timings.
- Region and disc-format support.
- Documented video-processing or upscaling behavior.
A progressive-scan DVD player is therefore an alternative playback path for comparison, not an accessory that makes an Xbox One deinterlace correctly. No particular current model has been tested here.
Settings and fixes to avoid assuming
No guaranteed Xbox deinterlacing switch
Do not follow a guide that promises a universal “deinterlace” or “inverse telecine” option in the Xbox One Blu-ray Player app. Such a control was not confirmed in authoritative Microsoft material for this issue, and menu availability can vary by software version.

An HDMI cable is not a deinterlacer
Replacing an HDMI cable may help a genuine signal-loss problem, but no reviewed source supports it as a cure for combing or cadence artifacts. Change the cable only when you have evidence of dropouts, handshaking failures, or an otherwise unstable link.
Do not treat one report as a failure rate
No statistic quantifying how many Xbox One users experience DVD deinterlacing artifacts was found. The forum account is useful for describing a possible symptom, not for predicting how your console should behave.

When a dedicated player is the sensible next step
Consider a separate DVD player when the same disc consistently looks clean on that device but combs on the Xbox/display combination, or when you need explicit progressive-output controls. Confirm the candidate player’s specifications and manual before buying; output modes and procedures vary by model. If both players show the same artifact on one display, investigate the disc transfer and the display’s processing instead of assuming the Xbox is solely responsible.

Xbox One DVD combing is a plausible, reported playback issue, but current evidence does not prove a universal console defect or identify a single failing component. Distinguish combing from softness, judder, and signal loss; inspect the controls your installed app actually provides; and compare the same scene on another player and, if possible, another display. Use a dedicated progressive-scan DVD player only as a documented alternative for comparison, not as a guaranteed Xbox fix.
