The Xbox PC app is most useful as a hub for PC Game Pass and other Xbox services, not as a universal replacement for Steam or every PC game launcher. It can help Windows gamers browse and install compatible games, launch titles, use Xbox social features, and bring some games installed from other storefronts into a broader library view. But a single view does not combine ownership, installation, updates, saves, or achievements into one system.
What the Xbox PC app does
The Xbox PC app is a Windows gaming hub for Xbox and Microsoft gaming services. It lets you browse the PC Game Pass catalog, find compatible PC games, install or launch them, and buy games and add-ons through its Store area. It also provides Xbox social features and access to supported cloud gaming and console Remote Play features. Microsoft describes these capabilities and the app’s requirements on its Xbox PC app page.
Its practical value is putting several Xbox-related activities in one place. It does not make every game available on Xbox, or every game you own on another PC storefront, playable as a native PC installation.
How it makes finding and starting games easier
Browse Xbox and PC Game Pass games
The app gives you an Xbox-facing place to browse supported PC games, catalog titles, genres, and recommendations. That can save switching among Xbox’s game pages, the Microsoft Store, and the Game Pass catalog just to see what is available. Catalog access depends on the game, plan, region, platform, and date; check the current PC Game Pass catalog if you are considering a subscription for one particular title.

Install compatible PC games
When a game is available for local PC play through your account, you can open its page in the app and choose to install it. The listing is the place to check whether the game is a PC version, what purchase or subscription it requires, how much storage it needs, and whether it calls for another account or launcher. Games installed through Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, or another storefront remain governed by that storefront’s license and installation system.
Launch games and shop
The app can launch installed Xbox-distributed PC games and provides a place to buy PC games, downloadable content, and add-ons. Some titles may still open a separate publisher or platform launcher, so “launch from the Xbox app” does not necessarily mean that other software or accounts are no longer involved.

See games from other storefronts
Microsoft promotes an aggregated library that can include Xbox, Game Pass, and installed games from other PC storefronts. It also advertises linking services such as Steam, Discord, and Twitch. Treat this as a way to organize or find access to some games, not as a merger of storefronts: visibility does not transfer a license or guarantee that the Xbox app will install, update, or manage the game.
Use Xbox social features
Xbox friends, activity, notifications, text or voice chat, and sharing screenshots, GIFs, or clips can make the app a convenient social starting point for players already using Xbox accounts. The account and any feature-specific eligibility requirements still apply.

What you need to use it
- Windows: Microsoft lists Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher, for the app.
- App storage and display: Microsoft lists approximately 150 MB of app storage and a 720p display requirement. These describe the app baseline, not the requirements for a particular game.
- Account: Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the game or holds the relevant subscription.
- Game hardware: Each title has its own processor, graphics, memory, storage, Windows-update, and sometimes launcher requirements. A PC that can run the app may not run a demanding game well.
- Windows S mode: S mode can restrict installation paths and may need to be switched out of for some usage.
- Subscription: Browsing the app and using it to access an eligible purchased game do not by themselves require PC Game Pass. Catalog access and cloud gaming have separate eligibility rules.
How to install and play a game
- Update Windows. Confirm the PC is running Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or later.
- Install or update the Xbox app. Use Microsoft’s official Xbox app download and information page.
- Sign in. Use the account with the purchase or Game Pass subscription you intend to use.
- Find the game. Browse the Game Pass area or library, or search for the title.
- Check the game page. Confirm PC availability, purchase or subscription eligibility, storage needs, system requirements, and any publisher account or separate launcher requirement.
- Choose a play route. Select Install for a compatible local PC game, or choose cloud play when it is offered and your account, plan, region, device, and title are eligible.
- Return to the library to launch. The exact labels can change with app updates, but browsing, installing, launching, shopping, social features, and supported play options are the core functions.
Is PC Game Pass required?
No. The app and the subscription are separate. The relevant requirement depends on what you want to do:

Microsoft’s PC Game Pass page showed a U.S. price of $13.99 per month around August 16, 2026. That is a dated U.S. price observation, not a worldwide or guaranteed current price; local pricing, tax, promotions, and terms can change. A subscription renews automatically unless canceled or recurring billing is turned off. Game Pass provides access rather than permanent ownership: access ends if the subscription ends or a title leaves the catalog, unless you buy the game separately.

Cloud gaming and Remote Play are different from installing a PC game
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Where offered, cloud gaming streams a supported game instead of downloading its full local PC installation. It can be useful for trying a game, conserving device storage, or playing a supported console title that has no native PC version. It still depends on plan eligibility, catalog and regional availability, a compatible device, and a stable connection. Latency, congestion, and stream quality vary with the network, so cloud play is not guaranteed to feel or look like local play.
Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play is a way to access games installed on your own Xbox console from a compatible device; it is not the same service as streaming a game from Microsoft’s cloud servers. It requires a configured console and network conditions suitable for remote play. Neither route should be confused with installing an Xbox console game as a native Windows PC game.

What remains fragmented across PC storefronts
The app’s library aggregation can make a mixed collection easier to locate, but the underlying systems remain separate. The original storefront or publisher may still control the license, files, updates, cloud saves, achievements, mods, and account sign-in. Cross-device continuity is also title-specific: achievements, saves, purchases, and progression follow you only where the game, platform, and account support that feature.
- Ownership: A Steam or Epic purchase does not become an Xbox purchase when its game appears in an aggregated view.
- Installation and updates: A game may need to be installed or updated through its original storefront or a publisher launcher.
- Saves and progression: Cross-save and cross-progression are not automatic across PC and console versions.
- Achievements: A title may use Xbox achievements, Steam achievements, a publisher system, or no shared achievement system.
- Mods and launch options: Tools and controls can differ by storefront and game.

Xbox mode and Windows handhelds
Microsoft positions Xbox mode as a controller-oriented interface for Windows 11 PCs and handhelds, with a way to move between a console-like experience and the standard Windows desktop. It is most relevant to handheld play or a PC used from the couch. It does not remove the Windows desktop, merge every storefront, or establish that a handheld performs like an Xbox console. Claims about battery life, frame rates, boot time, or responsiveness depend on the specific device and should not be inferred from the interface feature alone.

- Choose it first if you regularly use PC Game Pass, want Xbox services and friends on Windows, own an Xbox console as well as a PC, or want a controller-oriented Xbox interface on a Windows handheld.
- Choose Steam or another storefront first if most of your library and preferred features are already there, you want to avoid subscriptions, or you prioritize that storefront’s installation, modding, or purchase model.
