You cannot preorder the 2TB Xbox Series X anymore. Microsoft released the Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition in Holiday 2024, so buyers in August 2026 are looking for remaining retail stock. Microsoft’s U.S. product page lists it at $799.99, but Xbox has also announced that the 2TB model is being sunset. Treat stock and price as volatile and confirm the live checkout page before paying.
The console remains the premium Series X choice for someone who wants a disc drive, the largest built-in storage in the Series X family and the Galaxy Black design. It is not a faster “Pro” console: its performance is the same Series X class as the 1TB disc model.
Updated August 18, 2026. U.S. pricing and availability only unless noted.
What the 2024 Xbox Series X refresh actually is
“Refresh” describes Microsoft’s revised 2024 console assortment, not a new generation of Xbox hardware. The lineup included three options:
#1 Best Overall
- FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
- TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
- Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition: 2TB SSD, 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, Galaxy Black finish and a matching controller with a Velocity Green back.
- Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition: Robot White, 1TB SSD and no optical drive.
- Xbox Series S 1TB: Robot White and lower-performance Series S hardware.
Microsoft says the 2TB model has the same speed, performance and features as the standard Series X. Its meaningful differences are storage, disc functionality and the special-edition design. See Microsoft’s announcement at Xbox Wire.
Can you preorder it now?
No. Preorder language applied before the Holiday 2024 launch. In 2026, the relevant question is whether Microsoft or a retailer has remaining inventory.
On June 25, 2026, Xbox announced that the 2TB model would be sunset effective August 1, 2026. That does not prove every unit is gone: Microsoft’s product page remains live, and regional fulfillment can differ. It does mean remaining stock should be treated as limited rather than as a normal, continuously manufactured model. Read the announcement at Xbox Wire.

Current U.S. price and availability
Microsoft’s indexed U.S. Store listing shows the Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition at $799.99, with purchase-related options such as free two-to-three-day shipping appearing in search results. That is a Microsoft listing price, not a guaranteed nationwide street price. The page has also shown inconsistent language, including “out of stock.”

Disc drive, storage and expansion
Built-in 4K UHD Blu-ray drive
Yes. The console plays physical Xbox games and compatible backward-compatible discs, 4K UHD Blu-ray movies, digital downloads and Game Pass titles. A disc-based buyer can continue using an existing library instead of rebuying games digitally. The 1TB Digital Edition cannot read discs.
What “2TB” means
The console has a 2TB custom NVMe SSD, twice the advertised capacity of a 1TB model. The operating system and reserved system data use part of the drive, so free game space is lower than 2TB. Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed usable-space figure on the cited product page.
Adding more storage
Microsoft supports Xbox Storage Expansion Cards, which match internal-drive performance and can run optimized Series X|S games directly. USB 3.1 drives are useful for storing games and running supported older titles, but optimized Series X|S games generally must be moved to internal storage or an approved expansion card to play. Expansion-card pricing changes, so check current retailer prices before comparing the total cost of a 1TB console plus added storage.

Who should buy the 2TB Galaxy Black?
Buy it when these conditions fit
- You use physical Xbox games or 4K Blu-ray discs.
- You regularly install large games and want to avoid managing storage immediately.
- You value the Galaxy Black finish and matching controller.
- The live price is acceptable compared with a 1TB disc console plus an expansion card.
- You are buying new and can find a listing with clear seller, warranty and return information.
Skip it when these conditions fit
- You only play digitally and do not need 2TB built in.
- You already own a 1TB Series X and can add or manage storage affordably.
- You are seeking higher frame rates or a faster CPU/GPU; this model is not a performance-generation upgrade.
- $799.99 leaves too little budget for games, Game Pass or a display upgrade.
- A certified-refurbished or standard console meets your needs.
What to check before ordering
- Open the live Microsoft Store page, not only a search result.
- Confirm an active purchase button and an actual delivery estimate.
- Verify the final price in the cart, including tax and shipping.
- Check whether Microsoft or a marketplace seller is fulfilling the order.
- Confirm the listing says 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition, not the 1TB Digital Edition.
- Read the condition, warranty and return policy, especially for refurbished or marketplace stock.
- Save the order confirmation and promised delivery date.
Verdict
The 2024 Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition is no longer a preorder product. It is a released, disc-equipped Series X with twice the advertised storage of the 1TB models, but Microsoft’s announced sunset makes remaining inventory uncertain. Buy it if you specifically need discs, maximum built-in storage and the special design and the live price works for you. For digital-only buyers, the 1TB Digital Edition—or a properly documented certified-refurbished unit—usually offers a more economical route.
