On July 28, 2025, Microsoft announced the rollout of “Stream your own game” in the Xbox PC app: Game Pass Ultimate members could stream more than 250 supported Xbox games they owned, including some titles without a native PC version. It was not a way to stream every game in an Xbox library, and the launch required both an eligible game and a supported region. Since then, Microsoft has reported a much larger catalog and broader subscription eligibility.
What the July Xbox update added
The headline change let eligible players stream certain games they owned from Microsoft’s cloud through the Xbox app on Windows, instead of downloading them to the PC. Microsoft said the launch catalog contained more than 250 supported games and was available in the 28 countries that supported Xbox Cloud Gaming at the time. The announcement and launch details are in Microsoft’s July 28, 2025 Xbox update.
This differs from ordinary Game Pass cloud streaming, which lets subscribers play games included with their plan. “Stream your own game” is for supported titles the player owns, even when they are not currently in the Game Pass catalog. The game still has to be enabled for cloud play; ownership alone does not make it eligible.
Who can use it now—and what applied at launch
At the July 2025 rollout, the requirement was Game Pass Ultimate, an eligible owned game, and access from a country where Xbox Cloud Gaming was supported. The feature was in the Xbox PC app. Before the general rollout, Microsoft’s July 15 announcement limited early access to Xbox Insiders in the PC Gaming Preview who also had Ultimate; it described the catalog as containing more than 250 games. The rules later broadened. In an update dated April 30, 2026, Microsoft said the owned-game streaming catalog had grown to more than 1,000 titles and that Essential, Premium, and Ultimate subscribers could stream owned games on supported devices. Those are Microsoft’s reported figures and tier details as of that update, not a guarantee that every title, tier, device, or country is supported in every case. Check Microsoft’s April 2026 update for that later status.
How to start streaming an owned game
These are the launch-era steps Microsoft documented in 2025. App labels and placement may have changed since then.
- Open the Xbox app on a Windows PC and sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox account associated with the game.
- Open the app’s Cloud Gaming section.
- Find the “Stream your own game” catalog.
- Select a supported game you own and start playing. Streaming runs the game remotely, so you do not need to download it to the PC.
The documented path comes from Microsoft’s July 15, 2025 launch instructions.

What counts as an owned game
For this feature, an Xbox entitlement is not enough by itself: the title must also be in the cloud-streamable catalog, and the account must meet the applicable subscription and regional requirements. A Game Pass catalog entitlement is access through a subscription, not the same thing as owning a purchased game for this feature. A purchase from another PC storefront may not count as an Xbox entitlement, and console and PC versions can have separate rights. Disc ownership, bundles, editions, delisted games, and DLC can also have different licensing behavior; the July announcement does not establish that every such case qualifies.

Which games were included?
Microsoft’s July update cited examples such as Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Mafia: Definitive Edition, The Callisto Protocol, Assassin’s Creed Unity, and PGA Tour 2K25. It also announced additions including Aragami 2, Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, Rubber Bandits, Rugby League 26, Solasta: Crown of the Magister, Spelunky 2, Streets of Rage 4, Tetris Effect Connected, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank, Ultimate Custom Night, Visage, Wheel World, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. These are examples from the July 2025 announcement, not a current complete list. Microsoft’s catalog can change, and eligibility may depend on the title, its platform version, licensing, and region.

Other changes in the July update
Cloud-playable games and cross-device history
Microsoft separately brought a cloud-playable filter to the Xbox PC app Library and previewed cross-device play history for Xbox Insiders. The history could show recent play across Xbox consoles, PC, and Windows handhelds; the cloud-playable view included console titles where cloud availability existed. The announced app paths were Library for the cloud-playable filter and the end of the “Jump back in” row on Home for cross-device history. These were Insider features in the July announcement, not necessarily available to all users at the same time as the owned-game streaming rollout. Details are in Microsoft’s July 21 Insider update.
Microsoft Rewards in the PC app
The app began showing progress toward Rewards earned through PC gaming in select markets for users aged 18 and older with a Microsoft account. Points had to be claimed before they were added to the Rewards balance, and Microsoft’s terms applied. This was not a universal or fixed payout for every game session.
Xbox Play Anywhere additions
The update also highlighted additions to Xbox Play Anywhere. For a participating game, one purchase provides access to compatible Xbox and PC versions, with saves, add-ons, and achievements carrying across supported devices. That is different from cloud streaming: Play Anywhere concerns compatible local game versions, while “Stream your own game” runs an eligible title from the cloud. A title’s availability in one program does not establish its availability in the other. Microsoft’s July update said more than 100 games had joined Play Anywhere during 2025 up to that point; that is a dated announcement, not a current total.

Retro Classics
The post also noted additions to Retro Classics through Xbox and Antstream Arcade, including Caesar, Conquests of Camelot, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Hard Head, Okie Dokie, Skate Boardin’, and Skeleton+. Microsoft said the broader collection was expected to grow beyond 100 titles over time.

Streaming can save local storage and avoid a large download. It can also make some console games playable on a Windows PC or handheld even when there is no native PC version to install. Its usefulness depends on a stable connection, latency, Wi-Fi conditions, Microsoft’s regional service availability, and a responsive controller connection; the July announcement did not set a universal minimum internet speed.
A native installation is usually the better fit if you need offline play, want the lowest possible input delay, or need PC-specific settings or mod support. Streaming can be a poor match for fast competitive games or a connection with high latency, congestion, or a restrictive data cap. A controller may suit console-first titles, but it cannot fix network delay.

If a game is missing or will not launch
| What you see | Possible reason | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The game does not appear | It may not be cloud-enabled, or it may not be available in your region. | Check whether the title is supported for cloud play and whether the feature is available where you are. |
| The game appears but will not launch | The signed-in account may not own the Xbox entitlement or meet the applicable subscription requirement. | Confirm the account and entitlement, then verify the subscription rules that apply to your region and device. |
| A console-only title has no install option | It may be available to stream but not as a native PC game. | Use the cloud option if the title is listed as streamable. |
| Rewards progress is absent | The feature may not be available in your market, or the account may not meet age or claim requirements. | Check account eligibility and whether any points need to be claimed. |
| Video quality is poor or controls feel delayed | Network congestion, latency, Wi-Fi conditions, or controller connection can affect streaming. | Try a wired connection or less congested Wi-Fi, reduce other network traffic, and check that the controller is paired directly and recognized. |
Updating or restarting the Xbox PC app may help with an app display issue, but it will not remove a licensing or regional restriction. If the title is not listed, first verify that the account is correct and the game is eligible rather than assuming an app reinstall will unlock it.
What the update means for Xbox PC players
The July 2025 change made the Xbox PC app a route to stream selected owned Xbox games, not a tool that converts an entire console library into PC licenses. It is most useful for a player who owns an eligible title, has the required subscription and regional access, and prefers immediate streaming over a local install. The later expansion to more than 1,000 titles and additional Game Pass tiers makes the feature broader than it was at launch, but eligibility remains title- and account-specific.
