Xenogears Disc 2 feels unfinished because its expansive RPG format gives way to narrated events and slideshow sequences. Director Tetsuya Takahashi said the team could not complete the planned game on schedule: he chose the compressed presentation to tell the rest of the story rather than end the game after Disc 1. A remake could restore interactivity, but no remake or remaster announcement was identified in sources reviewed through October 8, 2026.
Why does Xenogears Disc 2 feel unfinished?
The clearest difference is how the story is delivered. Disc 1 largely unfolds through playable exploration and battles; parts of Disc 2 instead summarize major events through narration, with slideshow presentation in sections of the finale. That shift can make the second disc feel less like a continuation of the same RPG and more like a compressed account of what the game had planned to dramatize.
That feeling is understandable, but it is not the same as the game having no ending. Takahashi’s account is that the format was a compromise intended to complete the story, not an abandonment of it.
What did Xenogears director Tetsuya Takahashi say happened?
In a June 15, 2017 interview with Jason Schreier at Kotaku, Takahashi described a project staffed mostly by young newcomers. Square’s direction at the time was for projects to take two years, and the team was learning to make games with then-new 3D production methods as it worked. Those difficulties contributed to delays; Takahashi said, “It just wasn’t possible to get everything done.” (Kotaku interview, June 15, 2017)

As it became clear that the planned game would not fit the available time and resources, Square executives suggested ending after Disc 1, when Fei and the group escape from Solaris. Takahashi believed that would leave players dissatisfied. He proposed presenting the remainder in the narrated form that shipped, so the team could bring the story to its conclusion with the staff, schedule, and remaining budget available. (Kotaku interview, June 15, 2017)
So “Square ran out of money” is an incomplete explanation. Takahashi included the remaining budget among the constraints, but his account also points to the schedule, the team’s experience, and the challenge of learning 3D production. The interview is his first-hand recollection, not a formal project postmortem, and it does not establish a specific development budget, staff count, or how much time remained.

Would a Xenogears remake fix Disc 2?
It could address the most visible loss: a remake might turn some of the events now conveyed through narration into playable chapters and ease the abrupt change in pacing. But that would require more than polishing the original. The story’s compressed stretches would need to be expanded and shaped into gameplay, with decisions about how closely to preserve the original scenario, tone, and exposition. Those are creative possibilities, not announced Square Enix plans.
A useful way to judge any future proposal would be to ask:
- How much of the summarized material becomes playable, and how much remains exposition?
- Does the adaptation preserve the original scenario and tone?
- Does its pacing make the story easier to follow without replacing one kind of compression with another?
- Can the added scope be delivered coherently?
These questions matter because adding playable scenes is not automatically a better version of the story. The appeal of a remake rests on whether it can restore meaningful interaction while preserving the narrative that Disc 2 was designed to finish.
Has Square Enix announced a Xenogears remake or remaster?
No announcement was identified in the sources reviewed through October 8, 2026. GamesRadar’s report on Square Enix’s 28th-anniversary post is secondary coverage and offers limited evidence about that post; it should not be treated as a definitive statement of the company’s position. The sources reviewed do not establish a remake’s scope, developer, or whether it would preserve the original scenario. Takahashi’s 2017 interview explains the original game’s production compromise, not a remake proposal.

What official Xenogears collectibles and media are listed?
For readers interested in physical merchandise rather than a remake, Square Enix’s North American catalog lists Xenogears Structure Arts plastic model kits depicting Gears including Weltall-Id, Weltall-2, Stier, Crescens, Renmazuo, Xenogears, and Siebzehn. This is an optional collectible detail, not a solution to Disc 2’s pacing. The catalog listing does not establish current Amazon availability, sellers, or prices. (Square Enix Store North America)
Square Enix also lists a Bring Arts Bartholomew Fatima figure, with accessories described on its product page. The listing gives a December 2024 release date; it does not establish present stock or marketplace availability. (Square Enix Store North America)
