Verdict: Xiaomi’s 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are high-end smartphones with a convincing retro-handheld accessory—not replacements for a Steam Deck, Switch, or dedicated gaming phone. The separately sold Retro Handheld Console Case adds physical controls and uses the rear Dynamic Back Display for a limited selection of games. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, large batteries and bright displays make both promising gaming devices, but sustained frame rates, temperatures, controller latency and broad game compatibility still need independent testing.
The biggest obstacle for buyers outside China is practical rather than technical: as of August 18, 2026, Xiaomi’s global lineup lists the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra, not the 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max. Western coverage describes the Pro models as China-focused phones, so importing one means checking firmware, network bands, Google services, warranty and app compatibility yourself.
What “almost a pocket console” really means
The console comparison comes from a specific combination of hardware, not from a dedicated console operating system. Xiaomi sells a Retro Handheld Console Case separately for both phones. It adds a D-pad and physical buttons, giving the handset a Game Boy-like shape, while the rear display can remain visible with the main screen turned off. WIRED reports support for only a small selection of games, so this is a curated retro-gaming mode rather than unrestricted emulation or a complete console library (WIRED).
- The case is an optional purchase, not an included transformation built into every phone.
- Its advertised game support is limited; do not assume that every Android game, emulator or console platform will recognize the controls.
- There is no evidence that either model runs Nintendo Switch or Steam libraries natively.
That makes “a phone with a retro-console accessory” accurate. “A full pocket-console replacement” is not.

The Dynamic Back Display: useful screen or novelty?
The rear Dynamic Back Display is the feature that links the phone and case. Xiaomi and hands-on reports describe several everyday uses:
- Custom watch faces and AI-generated wallpapers.
- Virtual pets, dynamic notifications and quick notes.
- Glanceable information such as flight, train-ticket and delivery notifications.
- A camera preview for framing selfies and group photos with the main cameras.
Using the main camera for a self-portrait could be genuinely useful, especially for group shots, because subjects can see their framing. It does not, by itself, prove better image quality or guarantee that every camera mode appears on the rear panel.
What remains unconfirmed
The available reports do not establish whether the panel can run ordinary Android apps, provide full navigation or media controls, stay active during regular games, or support more than Xiaomi’s advertised titles. They also do not settle the attachment method, added weight, charging access, protection around the camera island or input latency. Those are hands-on questions, not specifications that should be inferred.

Rear-screen dimensions also conflict in published coverage: Android Central describes a 2.6-inch panel on both models, while Tech Advisor lists 2.7 inches for the Pro and 2.9 inches for the Pro Max. Use Xiaomi’s Chinese specification sheet for a final measurement rather than treating either secondary figure as definitive (Android Central; Tech Advisor).
Gaming hardware: strong potential, incomplete proof
Both phones use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform. Xiaomi positions it for demanding games and other intensive workloads. Hands-on coverage reports configurations reaching 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, with Android Central listing Pro variants from 12GB/256GB up to 16GB/1TB (Xiaomi; WIRED; Android Central).
That establishes flagship-class capability, not a measured gaming victory. The reviewed material does not provide independently verified frame rates, frame pacing, thermal-throttling results, surface temperatures, hourly battery drain, emulator compatibility, GPU-driver behavior or performance while charging. A Snapdragon specification can indicate headroom; it cannot guarantee a stable 60 or 120 frames per second after a long session.

Choose the Pro for portability
The 6.3-inch Pro keeps the same processor, rear-display concept and accessory compatibility in a smaller body. It is the sensible choice if you want the experiment without committing to a 6.9-inch handset.
Choose the Pro Max for long sessions
The Pro Max’s 6.9-inch screen gives touch controls, cloud gaming and video more room, while its reported 7,500-mAh battery is the stronger argument for extended play. The trade-off is a larger, less one-handed phone, especially with the controller case attached.
Displays, battery and charging
Xiaomi highlights M10 display technology and SuperRED luminous material, along with brightness and efficiency improvements. Those are manufacturer claims; the supplied material does not include independent brightness, color, PWM, response-time or gaming-refresh measurements.

The reported battery capacities are unusually large for mainstream flagships: 6,300 mAh in the Pro and 7,500 mAh in the Pro Max. Both are reported to support 100W wired and 50W wireless charging (Android Central; TechSpot). Capacity alone does not establish gaming endurance. Imported Chinese units may also ship with a region-specific charger or plug, and the reviewed sources do not confirm whether the case blocks USB-C access or whether charging affects sustained performance.

The rear display can act as a preview when you use the primary cameras for selfies, portraits or group photographs (WIRED). In principle, that lets subjects help compose the shot and avoids relying on a conventional front camera. The practical benefit depends on preview size, orientation, supported modes and visibility outdoors—details that require testing.

Reported coverage gives the Pro Max a 5× periscope telephoto with a larger sensor and macro capability, while Xiaomi-reported summaries describe a 50-megapixel main-camera trio. Check Xiaomi’s Chinese product sheet for the exact camera table before comparing models.

The China-market problem for US and other international buyers
Xiaomi’s global announcement lists the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi, but not the 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max (Xiaomi global announcement). Xiaomi corporate reporting confirms the Pro models, Dynamic Back Display and HyperOS 3, but does not turn them into globally sold variants (Xiaomi Corporation filing).
Before importing, verify each item for your exact carrier and country:
- LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM support.
- Google services, Android Auto, banking apps, DRM certification and push notifications.
- Chinese-language system apps, assistant features and notification behavior.
- Bootloader and ROM policies: unlocking or flashing can affect security, updates and app compatibility.
- Warranty, repairs, replacement parts and the seller’s return window.
The reviewed sources establish the China-focused availability, but not universal outcomes for every US carrier, bank or app. Treat those as purchase checks, not assumptions.
Pricing and accessory uncertainty
Price signals vary by page, configuration and date. Xiaomi’s China catalog displayed the Pro Max from 6,499 yuan when checked, while another Xiaomi result showed 5,999 yuan. Android Central reported a 4,999-yuan launch starting price for the Pro. None should be presented as a single current worldwide price; confirm the selected Chinese configuration on Xiaomi’s live product pages (Xiaomi 17 Pro Max; Xiaomi specifications; Android Central).
WIRED confirms the Retro Handheld Console Case is sold separately and works with both Pro models, but no verified official accessory price was established. Budget for the case, import costs and possible charger or warranty complications separately.
Who should consider one?
Good fit
- China-market buyers with local warranty and Xiaomi services.
- Enthusiasts specifically attracted to the rear display and retro controller.
- Gamers who prioritize battery capacity and flagship silicon over global software convenience.
Poor fit
- US buyers who need guaranteed carrier, Google, Android Auto, eSIM or banking support.
- Players seeking a broad handheld library and built-in controls without an extra accessory.
- Anyone requiring independently verified sustained-performance benchmarks.
- Buyers who want a mature, globally stocked accessory and repair ecosystem.
Final verdict
The Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max earn “almost pocket consoles” because a real physical-control case integrates with a second rear display and supports selected retro games. Their Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform, large batteries and spacious screens make the underlying phones serious gaming candidates. But the console experience is accessory-based, game support is limited, and long-session performance remains unverified in the supplied evidence. For international buyers, China-only availability and software, carrier and warranty questions matter more than the novelty. Treat them as distinctive flagship phones with a clever retro-gaming mode—not as replacements for a dedicated handheld.
