Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Game Controller in China on April 18, 2023, for 199 yuan. Contemporary coverage described three connection methods—USB, Bluetooth and a bundled wireless receiver—plus Windows and Android compatibility and Steam support. The roughly $29 figure was an exchange-rate conversion, not a confirmed US retail price. Current official availability of this exact model is unclear.
What Xiaomi actually launched
The product was marketed in Chinese coverage as the Xiaomi Game Controller (Xiaomi 游戏手柄), sold through Xiaomi Youpin. It was positioned as a lower-cost, simpler alternative to the Xiaomi GamePad Elite Edition introduced the previous year. The launch date was April 18, 2023 in Chinese reporting and April 19 in international coverage. Sources: ITHome and Gizmochina.
The original price was 199 yuan in China. International coverage called that approximately $29 at the time, but there is no evidence here of a $29 US launch, an official US release, or a global warranty. Xiaomi’s currently indexed controller page appears to describe a different, older Bluetooth Gamepad with Bluetooth 3.0, three-axis sensing and replaceable AA batteries, so it should not be treated as the 2023 model’s specification or sales page: Xiaomi specifications.
“Wired and wireless” meant three connection modes
The headline wording can be misleading. This was not simply one wired mode and one wireless mode; reports described three distinct ways to connect:

That bundled receiver is important when evaluating an imported unit. A used or open-box listing without it may lose one of the controller’s advertised connection options.
Features reported for the 2023 model
- Large joystick and an ergonomic button layout.
- Hall-effect linear triggers. The reports do not establish that the analog sticks use Hall-effect sensors, so the controller should not be described as having “Hall-effect sticks.”
- Built-in six-axis gyroscope and vibration functionality.
- Rechargeable lithium battery with a claimed runtime of up to 20 hours. This is a manufacturer or launch-coverage claim, not an independent battery test.
- Support for connecting two controllers on Windows computers and smart TVs for two-player gaming.
- Xiaomi Game Center mapping for some games or devices that do not natively accept controller input. Availability can depend on the Android device, game and software version.
The reports identify Windows computers, Android smart TVs, Android phones, Android tablets, Steam, Xiaomi cloud gaming, Tencent START and NetEase cloud gaming as supported targets. They do not provide complete Windows or Android version requirements, a verified driver-download path, polling-rate data, a confirmed model number, or a documented firmware-update procedure.

What Steam support does—and does not—tell you
Contemporary reporting says the controller supported Steam. Read that as a broad compatibility claim, not proof of every Steam feature. The available evidence does not establish formal Steam Input certification, universal plug-and-play recognition, identical gyro or vibration behavior in every mode, or compatibility with SteamOS and Steam Deck.
Steam may detect the controller differently over USB, Bluetooth and the receiver. A game can also expect an Xbox/XInput-style device while exposing generic button labels for another input protocol. “Works with Steam” therefore does not mean “works automatically in every Steam game,” and it is not the same as native SteamOS support. By comparison, 8BitDo explicitly documents Steam optimization and SteamOS compatibility for its Pro 3: official Pro 3 page.

Safe setup sequence
No verified manual for this exact model is available here, so button combinations should be taken from the included instructions rather than guessed. The following workflow avoids presenting undocumented combinations as official:
- USB: Connect the controller to the Windows PC or Android device with a compatible data cable, wait for detection, then check Steam’s controller settings and its input-test screen.
- Bluetooth: Put the controller into pairing mode as described in its manual, open the host’s Bluetooth settings, select the controller, and confirm detection in Steam before launching a game.
- Receiver: Plug in the supplied receiver, switch the controller to its receiver mode as described in the manual, allow the operating system to recognize it, and then check Steam.
If Steam does not recognize it
- Start with USB mode to separate pairing issues from broader compatibility problems.
- Disconnect other gamepads and virtual-controller software, then restart Steam.
- Test Steam Input both enabled and disabled for the individual game.
- Check whether the game expects an Xbox/XInput-style controller.
- Try the receiver instead of Bluetooth if wireless input is unstable.
- If Windows sees the device but button labels are wrong, use Steam’s per-game remapping.
- Do not assume gyro, vibration or Xiaomi mapping will work in every connection mode.
Should you buy one in 2026?
The original price is no longer the main issue. The launch was in 2023, and current official stock for this exact three-mode controller has not been verified. An imported listing may be old stock, a used unit or a gray-market product. Battery capacity may have declined during storage, and China-region purchasing can complicate shipping, returns, warranty service, firmware support and replacement receivers.

It can make sense when
- The seller identifies the exact 2023 model and includes the working receiver.
- The price remains substantially below a current mainstream controller after shipping, tax and return costs.
- You need Android support, a gyroscope and three connection options.
- You are comfortable using USB as a fallback and accepting China-region support limitations.
It is a poor choice when
- You need dependable local warranty service or guaranteed replacement parts.
- You require documented SteamOS or Steam Deck compatibility.
- You want confirmed XInput behavior and consistent Xbox-style prompts.
- The asking price approaches that of a current Xbox or well-supported 8BitDo controller.
Before paying an importer
- Confirm that the listing is the 2023 three-mode model, not Xiaomi’s older Bluetooth Gamepad.
- Verify that the receiver, charging/data cable and any original documentation are included.
- Ask how returns and warranty claims work in your country.
- Calculate shipping, taxes, reseller markup and the cost of returning a defective unit.
- Ask whether the seller can demonstrate pairing and charging; do not rely on a generic product photograph.

Bottom line for Steam and Android buyers
Xiaomi’s controller was a real April 2023 China launch, not a new August 2026 release. At 199 yuan, the combination of USB, Bluetooth, receiver-based wireless connectivity, a rechargeable battery, gyro, Hall-effect linear triggers and reported Steam support was attractive. In 2026, buy it only when a reputable seller can confirm a genuine, complete unit and workable returns. For predictable Steam or SteamOS use, a currently documented Xbox or 8BitDo controller is the safer choice.
