xlcall32.dll is an Excel callback library used by Excel XLL add-ins and software that connects to Excel’s programming interface. If xlcall32.dll is missing, damaged, quarantined, incompatible, or unreachable, repair the Office installation or the application that is trying to load it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The 60-second answer

If Microsoft Excel is installed, repair Office first:

  1. Close Excel and every other Office application.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office installation.
  5. Select the … menu, then choose Modify.
  6. Approve the administrator prompt.
  7. Select Quick Repair > Repair.
  8. Restart Windows and test Excel or the affected add-in.

If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair > Repair. Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more complete repair because it repairs the entire Office suite.

If Excel is not installed, the program reporting the error may have an Excel dependency. Install the Office or Excel product required by that program, then repair or reinstall the dependent application using its official installer.

What xlcall32.dll is

Microsoft describes xlcall32.dll as the dynamically linked form of Excel’s callback library. XLL add-ins use Excel callback functions, including functions associated with Excel4, Excel4v, and XlCallVer, to communicate with the Excel process.

An XLL is a specialized Excel add-in implemented as a dynamic-link library. Excel loads XLL files through its Add-in Manager. They are not ordinary COM add-ins and do not normally require Windows DLL registration.

This makes xlcall32.dll an Excel and Office component, not a general Windows system file. It is not normally supplied by:

  • Windows itself
  • Visual C++ Redistributables
  • DirectX
  • .NET

The file may be located in different Office directories depending on the Office edition, installation technology, release, and architecture. Do not assume that one path applies to every computer.

The official Excel XLL SDK is intended for developers creating XLL add-ins. It includes development headers, libraries, samples, and documentation, but it is not a consumer repair package and should not be used as a substitute for repairing an installed Office copy.

Which applications request it

The error can appear when:

  • Excel starts and loads an XLL add-in
  • A financial or market-data application launches an Excel integration
  • R or another analytical environment loads an Excel-related component
  • A legacy business application calls Excel’s C API
  • A third-party add-in was installed, updated, or partially removed

The application showing the message may not be Excel. For example, an R or Bloomberg integration can report the missing library even though the underlying dependency is Excel or an Excel-related component.

Before changing anything, note where the error appears. An error during Excel startup points toward Office or an XLL. An error only in a finance, R, or other external program points toward that program’s installation, loader, configuration, or architecture.

Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office

This is the best first fix when Excel is installed or the problem started after an Office update, failed repair, cleanup operation, or unexpected shutdown.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Windows 11

  1. Close all Office applications.
  2. Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  4. Select the … button beside it.
  5. Choose Modify.
  6. Select Quick Repair.
  7. Select Repair and follow the prompts.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Open Excel and test the add-in or integration again.

Windows 10

  1. Close Office applications.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Apps, then Apps & features.
  4. Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  5. Choose Modify.
  6. Run Quick Repair, then restart Windows.
  7. Test the application again.

Quick Repair is normally the faster option. If it does not restore the component, run Online Repair:

  1. Return to the Office entry in Installed apps or Apps & features.
  2. Select Modify.
  3. Choose Online Repair.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Keep the computer connected to the internet and allow the process to finish.
  6. Restart Windows and test again.

Online Repair can reset or reinstall Office components and may also remove custom Office changes. Recheck your add-ins afterward.

For an older MSI-based Office installation, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Office, choose Change, and select Repair.

If Office repair fails, uninstall Office through Microsoft’s supported removal process and reinstall the correct Office edition. Then install the affected XLL or integration again from its developer.

Fix 2: Check Office and add-in architecture

The name xlcall32.dll does not prove that the file is 32-bit. Microsoft documents separate x86 and x64 Excel instances using that filename, and the correct file depends on the Office installation and calling process.

Check your Office architecture in Excel:

  1. Open Excel if it starts.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select About Excel.
  4. Read the architecture shown in the dialog, such as 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. Close the dialog.

The add-in or external program must support the same architecture as the Excel process that loads it. A 32-bit add-in cannot load into a 64-bit Excel process, and a 64-bit dependency cannot be loaded into a 32-bit process.

If the error began after installing an add-in:

  1. Remove the add-in using its own uninstaller or the vendor’s documented removal process.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Install the version that matches your Office architecture.
  4. Start Excel and enable the add-in again if necessary.

For a legacy add-in, the developer may specifically require 32-bit Office. Do not replace the DLL with a file from another architecture or another Office release.

Fix 3: Repair the application that displays the error

If Excel works normally but another program fails, the third-party program may have an incomplete installation or an outdated loader.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the application that displays the error.
  3. Select its … menu.
  4. Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
  5. If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Download the current installer from that application’s official developer.
  8. Install it with the required Excel or Office components.
  9. Test the integration again.

Reinstalling only an R package or Excel add-in may not repair the Office or finance software component that actually requests xlcall32.dll.

If the program is managed by an organization, contact its administrator or vendor. Ask specifically whether the current release supports your Office architecture and whether Excel must be installed locally.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

A security product may have quarantined a genuine Office file after an update or a false detection. Check quarantine before copying files or repeatedly reinstalling applications.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open any entry associated with Excel, Office, or xlcall32.dll.
  6. Verify the file location, publisher, and source before taking action.

Restore a quarantined file only when its provenance and digital signature are trustworthy. Update Defender and Office first. If you cannot verify the file, leave it quarantined and repair Office instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After restoring a verified file, restart Windows and test the affected application. If Defender quarantines it again, do not keep restoring it. The file or its installation may be damaged, and the application vendor should investigate.

Fix 5: Check whether the file exists, without copying it

A file can exist while the calling application still reports “not found.” Windows may be unable to locate a dependency, the application may be searching an obsolete Office path, or the process may be using the wrong architecture.

To inspect the Office installation:

  1. Open Excel.
  2. Select File > Account > About Excel and record the Office edition and bitness.
  3. In File Explorer, inspect the Office installation folders associated with that edition.
  4. Search only trusted Office directories for xlcall32.dll.
  5. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if present.

Do not copy the file into C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, SysWOW64, or an application folder unless the software vendor explicitly documents that action. A copied file can be the wrong version, wrong architecture, or missing its own dependencies.

If the file is present and signed but the external application still fails, repair or reinstall that application. Its loader or configuration is more likely to be the problem than the file itself.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly associated with OLE or ActiveX components. It does not repair ordinary runtime dependencies.

XLL add-ins are loaded by Excel’s Add-in Manager and are not installed like COM DLLs. Running:

regsvr32 xlcall32.dll

will generally be irrelevant and may produce an error stating that the module or registration entry point could not be found.

Do not force-register xlcall32.dll. Repair Office or the application that uses Excel instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use Windows repair commands only for wider corruption

Because xlcall32.dll belongs to Office rather than the protected Windows system-file store, System File Checker is not the primary repair for this error. Use these commands when Windows itself is also showing damaged system components, update failures, crashes, or other corruption symptoms.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run the Office repair steps again if xlcall32.dll is still missing.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for Windows component corruption. SFC may repair Windows files, but it is not a reliable way to restore an Office DLL.

Repeatedly running DISM and SFC without recording what changed rarely helps when the failure is isolated to Excel or one third-party loader. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan showing what it detects; repairs are completed by the full version, but Office repair remains the definitive fix when this file belongs to Excel.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the symptoms are broader

A graphics or other device driver is not a normal cause of a missing Excel callback DLL. Consider driver troubleshooting only if Excel also crashes, displays rendering problems, or Windows has wider hardware-related failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the symptoms, such as Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the device and select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Do not remove unrelated devices just because xlcall32.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the exact devices involved; installation is completed by the full version, while the Excel or application repair remains the relevant fix for this DLL error.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

Do not download xlcall32.dll from a random DLL website. That approach can provide:

FAQ

Is xlcall32.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with Microsoft Excel and Office installations. External applications may request it when they use Excel’s callback interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it always a 32-bit DLL?

No. The filename does not identify the architecture. Match the add-in and calling program to the bitness shown in Excel > File > Account > About Excel.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not as the first response. This is an Excel callback component, so repair Office and the affected application first. Install a runtime only when the application vendor specifically identifies it as a missing dependency.

Why does Excel start but my other program fail?

The external program may have its own loader, search path, dependency, or architecture mismatch. Repair or reinstall that program and confirm that it supports your Office edition and bitness.

What if repair does not work?

Record the exact error, application name, Office edition, Office bitness, any trusted file path, file signature details, and relevant entries from Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application. Give that information to the add-in or application vendor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use System Restore?

Only as a fallback when the failure clearly followed a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists. Office repair and reinstalling the affected application are safer first-line steps.
