“The code execution cannot proceed because xmpfiles.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.”

An xmpfiles.dll missing error usually means the application that installed xmpfiles.dll is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or being launched from the wrong folder. The safest fix is to identify that application and repair or reinstall it from its official publisher.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first matching description:

  • The error names a camera, photo, or media application: repair or reinstall that application first.
  • The problem began after an update or uninstall: reinstall the affected application so all files come from the same release.
  • Windows Security reports that the file was quarantined: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The application was moved, copied from another computer, or restored from an old backup: reinstall it in its normal folder.
  • The error mentions an incompatible format, 0xc000012f, or “not designed to run on Windows”: suspect damaged files or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
  • Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
  • The executable shown in the error is unfamiliar: investigate that program before restoring or downloading any DLL.

Do not begin by downloading a standalone xmpfiles.dll.

What is xmpfiles.dll

XMPFiles.dll is an application library from Adobe’s XMP Toolkit SDK. XMP stands for Extensible Metadata Platform. It is metadata stored inside or alongside media and other files, including information such as descriptions, copyright details, camera data, and editing history.

Adobe describes XMPFiles as the library used to locate, add, and update XMP metadata in files. It works with another SDK component, XMPCore, which handles the XMP data model. Adobe’s toolkit supports Windows x86 and x64 builds, but software companies may bundle or rebuild the library for their own applications.

This is not a standard Windows system DLL. It normally sits inside the installation directory of the application that uses it, rather than in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

A copy of the file may be included with Nikon Transfer 2, NX Studio, Sony PlayMemories Home, or another photo and media program. Multiple applications can have separate copies. Repairing one copy does not necessarily repair the application that is failing.

File details reported by third-party utilities, including a claimed publisher, version, or size, do not identify the owning application by themselves. Treat those fields as clues, not proof that a file is genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the application that owns the file

Before changing anything, find which program is requesting xmpfiles.dll.

Check the error window

Read the title bar and the complete message. It may identify the application directly. Also note whether the error appears when opening a shortcut, importing photos, connecting a camera, or starting Windows.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the executable name and its folder.

The folder is often more useful than the DLL name. A path containing Nikon, Sony, a camera utility, or a media editor usually identifies the parent application.

Check Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Processes or Details.
  3. Start the program again if possible.
  4. Find the process that appears just before the error.
  5. Right-click it and choose Open file location.

Do not restore a DLL merely because an unknown startup executable requests it. Identify and verify the executable first.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the most likely solution because xmpfiles.dll belongs to an application installation, not Windows.

Try the built-in repair option

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Find the application that produced the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the application in Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Repair normally preserves the application and its user data. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, continue with a clean reinstall.

Reinstall the owning program

  1. Close the application and any related launcher.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the affected program and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Download the installer from the application publisher’s official support or download page.
  6. Install the same application again.
  7. Restart Windows once more.
  8. Test the application before copying back old program folders or DLL files.

For Nikon software, use Nikon’s official Download Center and install the compatible NX Studio package. Nikon documents Nikon Transfer 2 as part of NX Studio. For Sony PlayMemories Home, use Sony’s official support installer and installation instructions. Do not use a standalone DLL repository.

If the program has a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Verify files:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the launcher.
  2. Find the affected application.
  3. Open its settings or management menu.
  4. Select Verify, Repair, or the equivalent option.
  5. Wait for the scan to finish.
  6. Start the application again.
  7. Reinstall it if verification cannot replace the missing file.

Run the application as administrator only as a test

If reinstalling succeeds but the error remains:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Compatibility.
  4. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Test the application.

If this works, the problem may involve permissions or the installation location. Running every application permanently as administrator is not a general DLL repair, so use it as a diagnostic step and consider reinstalling the program to its normal location.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate application file after an update or a false detection.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry naming xmpfiles.dll or the affected application.
  5. Expand the entry and read its location and detection details.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • It came from an official installation of the application.
  • The file is in the expected application folder.
  • The application publisher and digital signature are trustworthy.
  • You have checked that the detection is a false positive.

If you restore it, reinstall or repair the parent application afterward if possible. Add an exclusion only after confirming the program is legitimate and understanding the security risk.

If the file came from an unknown DLL website, do not restore or whitelist it. Remove it and reinstall the owning application from its official publisher.

Fix 3: Correct a 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch

Adobe’s toolkit has Windows x86 and x64 builds. The application’s architecture must match its files.

Do not mix a 32-bit xmpfiles.dll with a 64-bit executable, or a 64-bit DLL with a 32-bit executable. Also avoid copying a DLL from another computer or from a different release of the program.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > About.
  3. Read System type.

To check an application, use its publisher’s documentation or contact its support team. Task Manager may show (32 bit) beside a running 32-bit process on 64-bit Windows.

The practical fix is to uninstall the affected application and install the correct build from its publisher. Keep the executable and all bundled DLLs from the same installer.

Fix 4: Repair related camera or media drivers

A missing xmpfiles.dll is not normally repaired by Device Manager, but a camera-transfer application can also fail when its device drivers or camera connection software are damaged.

  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the device is listed with a warning icon, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reconnect the device. Use the camera manufacturer’s official driver or software package if Windows cannot find a suitable driver.

Manually hunting through Device Manager for stale drivers can take time, particularly after changing camera software or hardware. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that shows detected driver issues; installing drivers is handled by its full version, while reinstalling the camera or media application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Do not install unrelated Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages just because a DLL error appears. Those runtimes may solve a separate dependency problem, but xmpfiles.dll itself is not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file.

Fix 5: Check for broader Windows corruption

SFC and DISM are not first-line tools for this problem because Windows does not normally service xmpfiles.dll. Use them when several Windows applications fail, Windows reports damaged system files, updates are malfunctioning, or the application installer itself will not run.

First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

SFC may report that it found no integrity violations because the missing file belongs to a third-party program. If the error remains, return to the application’s official installer rather than trying to extract the DLL from Windows.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that identifies reported repair issues; the repair function is handled by its full version, and it is optional because reinstalling the affected application remains the correct fix for an application-owned DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check the installation path and disk

A moved or partially copied application may still start through an old shortcut but fail to find its local DLL.

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Compare the Target path with the folder where the program is currently installed.
  4. Remove old shortcuts and create a new shortcut from the current executable.
  5. If the application folder was manually moved, reinstall it instead of editing paths or copying individual DLLs.

If the file disappears again after reinstalling, check antivirus logs, available disk space, and the health of the drive. A damaged user profile can also affect installation permissions. Test installation from an administrator account if the installer fails only for one Windows user.

Why downloading or registering the DLL is unsafe

Do not download xmpfiles.dll from a random DLL download site. The file may contain malware, belong to a different product, use the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the executable. Even a clean file may not fix missing companion libraries, registry settings, application resources, or the installation layout.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. An application normally searches its own installation directory, and placing a third-party library in a Windows folder can create version conflicts or affect another program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also do not run:

regsvr32 XMPFiles.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified basis for treating Adobe’s XMPFiles runtime library as a self-registering COM component. A message saying that DllRegisterServer was not found means the command does not apply; it has not repaired the file.

If the error still returns

Collect this information before contacting the application publisher:

  • The complete error text.
  • The application name and executable name.
  • The full path of the executable.
  • The full path of xmpfiles.dll, if Windows or antivirus displays it.
  • Whether the issue began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, backup restore, or application move.
  • Whether antivirus quarantined the file.
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • The result of Repair, reinstall, DISM, and SFC.
  • Whether another shortcut launches an older installation.

If reinstalling immediately fails again, suspect antivirus removal, disk errors, permissions, a damaged user profile, or a stale shortcut. Run a full or offline Microsoft Defender scan if the executable or DLL location is suspicious.

System Restore is a later option when the problem began after a recent software installation or update and normal application repair has failed. Open Control Panel, search for Recovery, select Open System Restore, choose an appropriate restore point, and follow the prompts. Restore does not replace the need to verify the application afterward.

FAQ

Is xmpfiles.dll part of Windows?

No. It is generally an application-local component based on Adobe’s XMP Toolkit. The program that installed it should supply the correct copy.

Which programs use xmpfiles.dll?

It may be bundled with Nikon Transfer 2 or NX Studio, Sony PlayMemories Home, and other photo or media applications. The error path and executable identify the actual owner.

Should I install the latest Adobe XMP Toolkit?

Not necessarily. A commercial application may require the toolkit version and companion files with which it was built. Repair or reinstall the application instead.

Can Visual C++ Redistributable fix this error?

It is not the normal remedy for xmpfiles.dll. Install additional runtimes only when the application publisher specifically requires them or the error identifies a separate missing dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did SFC find nothing?

SFC checks protected Windows components. It generally cannot restore a missing third-party application DLL.

Is a reported 32-bit version proof that my file is correct?

No. A version or size shown by a third-party utility does not prove ownership, authenticity, or compatibility. Use the application’s official installer and keep its files together.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the application that displays the error, then repair or reinstall that application from its official publisher. Restore a quarantined file only after verifying its origin and digital signature.
