Yes, you can discuss XRP on Twitch or YouTube, but a paid or incentivized promotion is different from ordinary commentary. The platform may require a paid-promotion disclosure, and if your post reaches UK consumers, UK financial-promotion rules may apply regardless of where you or a sponsor are based. Disclose payment, commission, free products, and other material relationships clearly; do not assume a platform label alone makes a promotion lawful.
First decide whether you are discussing XRP or promoting something
A stream about XRP is not automatically a financial promotion. Its content and context matter: an educational explanation, a personal opinion, an endorsement of a crypto service, and a paid call to sign up are not interchangeable. The closer your content gets to encouraging viewers to acquire a cryptoasset or use a financial service, the more carefully you need to check the relevant rules.
- Ordinary editorial discussion: You are discussing XRP without being paid, receiving commission, or otherwise promoting a brand or service. Be accurate about what is fact, opinion, and uncertainty.
- Branded content: A company gives you money, goods, services, or another benefit in exchange for content, or influences content as a brand partner. Twitch and YouTube both have platform disclosure requirements for qualifying arrangements.
- Affiliate promotion: You may receive a commission or other benefit when a viewer uses your link or code. Treat that relationship as material and disclose it clearly. A platform tool’s definition of branded content does not decide whether legal disclosure duties apply.
A link to an exchange, wallet, or other service can be promotional even when it appears in chat, a panel, a description, or a response to a viewer. Consider the whole presentation, including what you say around the link and whether you benefit from the referral.
What UK financial-promotion rules mean for XRP creators
This is a UK-specific legal consideration, not a universal rule for creators everywhere. The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says the regime covers firms marketing cryptoassets to UK consumers, including firms based overseas, and can apply to social posts and online advertising. It began on October 8, 2023. The FCA also says its social-media financial-promotion rules are technology-neutral: the fact that a message appears in a livestream or on a social platform does not, by itself, take it outside the rules.

Whether a particular XRP-related post is within scope depends on its content and context. The FCA describes four routes through which a promotion can be lawfully communicated; a promotion outside those routes may breach section 21 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. The available route depends on the circumstances. Do not assume that being an influencer, affiliate, or overseas creator automatically exempts you. The FCA warns that an unauthorized person, including an influencer or affiliate marketer, who promotes a regulated financial product or service without appropriate approval may be committing a criminal offence.
For an in-scope promotion, the FCA expects communications to be fair, clear, and not misleading, and its crypto guidance addresses risk warnings and positive frictions in consumer journeys. The FCA says, “Cryptoassets remain high risk.” It also warns consumers to be prepared to lose all their money. Do not present a risk warning as a substitute for checking whether you are allowed to communicate the promotion in the first place.

The FCA’s guidance says relevant commercial relationships on social media—including payment or commission—should be disclosed. If your audience includes UK consumers and you are unsure whether a proposed endorsement, link, or call to action is a financial promotion, get advice from a suitably qualified professional before publishing. A disclosure cannot cure an unlawful promotion.
Twitch: use the branded-content tool when value is exchanged
Twitch defines branded content around content featuring a product or service in return for value, including money, goods, or services. Its examples include endorsements, sponsored gameplay, paid unboxings, channel sponsorships, brand panels, and logos overlaid on a stream. For qualifying branded content, Twitch instructs streamers to use the disclosure tool in the Creator Dashboard and to check that the promoted service is permitted.

- Check the category: Review Twitch’s branded-content restrictions before agreeing to a sponsor or promoting a service.
- Make the platform declaration: For qualifying content, use the branded-content disclosure tool in the Creator Dashboard. Twitch says the resulting notice displays “includes paid promotion” for 10 seconds when activated.
- Make your own disclosure clear: Tell viewers plainly what you received and who is behind the offer. Twitch says the tool does not remove the creator’s and brand’s responsibility to comply with applicable law.
Twitch lists prohibited branded-content categories that include initial coin offerings (ICOs), multilevel marketing, get-rich-quick schemes, and payday loans. Its policy does not establish that every cryptoasset, exchange, wallet, or XRP-related sponsorship has the same status. Do not infer that a particular crypto promotion is permitted simply because it is not one of the examples listed; confirm the current policy and the specific service’s eligibility before accepting a deal.

Twitch notes that an affiliate link shared in response to a community question is not necessarily branded content under its tool criteria. That is not a blanket legal exemption: a commission or other commercial relationship still needs to be assessed and disclosed where required.
YouTube: declare paid promotion in Studio and disclose clearly
YouTube treats content influenced by a brand partner in exchange for value—including payment, free products, or sponsorship—as branded content. Creators must declare it in YouTube Studio; YouTube then displays a paid-promotion label. YouTube expressly says creators remain responsible for making disclosure clear and prominent and for complying with applicable law.

- Assess the relationship: Check for payment, free products, sponsorship, or other value, including arrangements in which a brand influences the content.
- Make the Studio declaration: Declare qualifying branded content in YouTube Studio so the platform can show its paid-promotion label.
- Disclose to viewers in the content: State the relationship in plain language where viewers will notice it. A platform label is not a replacement for your own clear disclosure or for legal compliance.
- Check the ad format: YouTube restricts embedded third-party sponsor advertisements in formats where it offers a comparable ad format, including certain pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll formats. Paid placements and endorsements may be included when platform policy and applicable legal obligations are met.
Do not treat an affiliate link as a disclosure by itself. Tell viewers, in understandable terms, that you may earn a commission or receive another benefit if they use it.

Platform rules and local law are separate checks. A platform label does not establish that a promotion meets UK requirements or the rules of another jurisdiction. Conversely, a legal disclosure does not override a platform’s category or format restrictions.

A practical pre-stream checklist
- Identify the audience: Consider where viewers are located, especially whether the content markets a cryptoasset to UK consumers. Do not assume your country of residence alone determines which rules matter.
- Map every benefit: Record sponsor payments, commissions, referral codes, free products, services, and other incentives connected with the content.
- Check both the product and the promotion: Verify that Twitch or YouTube permits the specific arrangement and format, then assess whether the promotion is lawful where it reaches viewers.
- Use the platform’s declaration: Use the Creator Dashboard tool on Twitch or the Studio declaration on YouTube when the arrangement qualifies under that platform’s policy.
- Say it plainly: Put the disclosure where viewers can see or hear it, and explain the relationship rather than relying on a link, abbreviated tag, or platform label alone.
- Keep claims balanced: Do not imply guaranteed returns, minimize risk, or let a sponsor’s preferred wording make the content misleading. Separate personal opinion from verifiable facts.
- Save the details: Keep the sponsor terms, the disclosure wording, and a record of the platform declaration so you can check what you agreed to and what viewers saw.
Talking about hardware wallets without overpromising
A hardware wallet is a physical product category relevant to crypto custody and security discussions, but mentioning one is not a blanket endorsement. Google’s advertising policy treats crypto hardware wallets as a restricted category in specified markets and requires certification and local compliance there. That advertising rule does not establish that a particular device is suitable, available, or foolproof.
If you discuss a wallet, explain its function and limitations accurately. Do not claim that a device removes custody risk, guarantees security, or makes an exchange or crypto investment safe. If you received a device or another benefit, assess the relationship as a potential commercial disclosure as well as checking the platform rules.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- “It is just XRP commentary, so no rules can apply.” Discussion is not automatically a financial promotion, but content and context matter. Reassess if you endorse a service, encourage a transaction, or benefit from a referral.
- “The platform label is enough.” It is not. Add a clear viewer-facing explanation and separately check applicable law.
- “The link is only in chat or the description.” Placement does not erase a commercial relationship. Disclose commission or other benefits where required.
- “Twitch did not name XRP, so the sponsor is allowed.” The listed categories are not a universal approval of every cryptoasset or service. Check the specific offer against current platform policy.
- “I am outside the UK, so UK rules do not matter.” The FCA says the regime can reach overseas firms marketing cryptoassets to UK consumers. Consider the audience and seek qualified advice for an uncertain campaign.
- “A risk disclaimer makes any claim acceptable.” A warning does not turn a misleading claim into a fair one or make a promotion lawful if the required route is absent.
