Its free plan supports streaming up to 720p without a watermark; higher-resolution streaming on Free adds a watermark. If you use macOS or Linux, OBS Studio is the clearer alternative because it supports those systems and is free and open source.
What XSplit Broadcaster does
XSplit Broadcaster is a desktop production app: you build a scene from sources such as a webcam, gameplay capture, video, images, GIFs, or web content, then send that scene to a streaming destination or record it locally. Scenes can also include camera effects and multiple audio tracks. XSplit advertises plugins and extensions, plus the ability to import OBS scenes. See the XSplit Broadcaster product page for its current feature description.
This is a feature-based review, not a hands-on performance test. The available product information does not establish CPU or GPU load, stream reliability, or whether XSplit is easier or faster to use than OBS in practice.
Check compatibility before installing
XSplit’s current support requirements specify Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. The support page says there is no Mac version planned, so Mac users should consider OBS instead of looking for a Broadcaster macOS edition. The published minimums are requirements, not a guarantee that a specific game, scene, encoder, or quality setting will run well.

Requirements and recommendations can change. Use the current XSplit Broadcaster System Requirements page for your system. In particular, an older product-page snippet mentioned Windows 10 and a 5 Mbps HD recommendation; that should not be treated as the current system requirement.

- Install and sign in. Confirm that the PC meets the published requirements, install Broadcaster from XSplit, and sign in when prompted.
- Create a scene. Use the Layout Wizard for a guided starting layout, or add sources manually. Add only the inputs needed for the scene, such as a game capture, camera, image, video, or web source, then arrange and size them in the canvas.
- Check audio and composition. Confirm the intended microphone, desktop/game audio, and any other tracks are present. Check that overlays and camera framing do not obscure important game content.
- Configure a streaming output. Choose a supported platform and follow the output setup to authenticate. If the destination supports it, XSplit also documents custom RTMP as an output option; use the destination’s own server and stream-key details rather than guessing them.
- Start the stream. Select the configured output and click Stream. Confirm the broadcast is visible on the destination before treating the setup as complete.
For a local recording instead
Confirm which canvas or scene you intend to capture, then click Record. Make a short test recording and check its picture and sound before recording a long session. XSplit’s setup guide describes the recording workflow; it does not prescribe universal bitrate or resolution settings for every game and PC.
Optional camera input
A USB webcam is one possible source if you want a face-cam view, but XSplit does not require a particular webcam—or a camera at all. You can make scenes from gameplay and other sources without one.

XSplit Broadcaster vs OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the best-documented alternative in this comparison. The OBS Project describes it as free, open-source software for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with scenes, sources, transitions, audio controls, and plugin/API extensibility. Its help portal says OBS has no watermark or commercial-use restriction. XSplit and OBS both support scene-based production, so the practical choice depends on your operating system, budget, and specific production requirements—not a claimed performance advantage.
| Decision point | XSplit Broadcaster | OBS Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | Windows 10/11, 64-bit; no Mac version planned | Windows, macOS, and Linux |
| Price and licensing | Free tier with feature limits; paid Premium plans | Free and open source |
| Guided setup | Layout Wizard for a first scene | Auto-Configuration Wizard and a quick-start workflow |
| Scene production | Scenes and sources; product page also describes multiple audio tracks, plugins/extensions, and OBS scene import | Scenes, sources, transitions, audio mixer, plugins, scripts, and API |
| Watermark and commercial-use terms | Free streaming above 720p has a watermark; commercial use is listed as Premium | OBS Help Portal says no watermark or commercial-use restriction |
For OBS setup, its official Quick Start Guide recommends running the Auto-Configuration Wizard, adding scene sources, checking audio and output settings, and making a short test stream or recording. Consult the OBS Project and its Help Portal for current platform and licensing details.

Which one fits?
- Choose XSplit for consideration if you are on Windows and its scene workflow or a specific XSplit feature matches your needs. Check the free-tier resolution, scene count, and watermark rules first.
- Choose OBS for consideration if you need macOS or Linux support, prefer free/open-source licensing, or need to avoid a software watermark or commercial-use restriction.
- Compare a specific feature if plugins, transitions, audio routing, or imported scenes matter. Both publish extensibility and production features, but the pages cited here do not establish a universal winner for particular workflows.
Common setup problems and practical checks
- You are on macOS or Linux: Broadcaster is listed for Windows only. Use software with support for your operating system, such as OBS Studio.
- Your Free stream shows a watermark: XSplit lists watermarking above 720p on Free. Reduce output to 720p or below, or check the current Premium terms if you need higher output without the watermark.
- You cannot authenticate a platform output: Reopen the output setup and follow the platform authentication flow. For custom RTMP, verify the destination’s server address and stream key in its own dashboard, and enter them exactly as supplied.
- The stream does not appear at the destination: Confirm you selected the configured output and clicked Stream; check the destination’s live status and that the account or stream key is the intended one.
- Picture or sound is missing from a recording: Confirm the correct canvas is selected for recording and that the intended video and audio sources are active. Make and review a short test before a full session.
- Performance is unclear on your PC: The published minimums do not guarantee a particular game and scene will run well. A test with your actual game, sources, and target output is more informative than relying on the minimum requirements alone.
Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running
XSplit is a desktop scene-production app; the sources reviewed here do not establish it as a cloud service that continuously loops uploaded videos while your computer is off. If your specific goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing pre-recorded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera. The service offers one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
