yaml.dll is not a Windows system file, so Windows 10 or Windows 11 does not provide one universal copy. It normally belongs to the third-party application that installed it, often as a LibYAML runtime used by PHP, Lua for Windows, developer tools, games, or another application.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- Only one program fails at startup: repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
- Apache, IIS, PHP CLI, XAMPP, WampServer, Laragon, or a PHP framework reports the error: match the PHP YAML extension to your PHP version, architecture, and TS/NTS build.
- Lua for Windows or a Lua-based tool fails: reinstall or repair the complete Lua distribution.
- The file disappeared after an antivirus alert or cleanup: inspect Windows Security Protection History before restoring anything.
- The error says “specified module could not be found” even though
yaml.dllexists: a dependency of the DLL may be missing. - Several unrelated Windows programs fail: check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- A game installed through a launcher fails: use the launcher’s verify or repair-files feature instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The most important clue is the full path requested by the failing program. A filename alone cannot identify which yaml.dll you need.

What yaml.dll is
The name is commonly associated with LibYAML, an open-source C library that parses and emits YAML data. LibYAML can be built as a shared Windows library, and different applications may distribute their own build under the basename yaml.dll.
That does not make every file with this name interchangeable. The filename does not establish a single publisher, version, hash, installation directory, or architecture. Some builds also show unhelpful metadata such as version 0.0.0.0, unknown company, or no description.
Known sources include:
- PHP’s PECL YAML extension, which uses LibYAML and may need both
php_yaml.dllandyaml.dll. - Lua for Windows, whose older distributions included
yaml.dll. - Custom MinGW, C, PHP, Perl, Ruby, game, and application-specific builds.
yaml.dll is not normally found in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not treat a copy in either folder as automatically legitimate.
Fix 1: Repair the application that shows the error
This is the safest and most likely solution when one program is affected.

Identify the owner
- Note the exact program name in the error dialog.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Record the executable’s folder.
- Check that folder and its subfolders for
yaml.dll. - If the program closes too quickly, open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the application name and faulting path.
The required DLL should generally come from the same application package as the executable. A 32-bit program may need a 32-bit DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Repair or reinstall it
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for it to complete.
- Restart Windows and launch the program normally.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s publisher or use the original installer.
- Install the same application again.
- Launch it from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair lets the application start without the yaml.dll message. If the error remains, do not copy a similarly named DLL into the application directory. The installed package may be incomplete, incompatible, or missing another dependency.
Fix 2: Correct a PHP YAML installation
PHP is a frequent source of confusing yaml.dll errors because the extension and its runtime library have different filenames.
A PHP installation may need:
php_yaml.dllin PHP’sextdirectory.- A compatible
yaml.dllruntime library. - The correct PHP major and minor version.
- Matching x86 or x64 architecture.
- Matching Thread Safe or Non Thread Safe, shown as TS or NTS.
A typical message looks like this:
PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '...php_yaml.dll'
The specified module could not be found.
That message may mean php_yaml.dll is missing, or that yaml.dll, a Microsoft runtime, or another dependency cannot be loaded.

Check the PHP build
Open Command Prompt and run:
php -v
php --ini
php -i | findstr /I "Architecture Thread Safety"
Record:
- The PHP version.
- The loaded
php.inipath. - Whether PHP is x86 or x64.
- Whether it is Thread Safe or Non Thread Safe.
- The
extdirectory used by that PHP installation.
If php is not recognized, run the command from the PHP installation directory or use the full path to php.exe.
Install the matching extension
- Use the official PECL YAML package for Windows.
- Select the package matching the exact PHP version.
- Select x86 or x64 to match
php.exe. - Select TS or NTS to match the output of
php -i. - Place
php_yaml.dllin PHP’sextdirectory. - Place the accompanying
yaml.dllwhere the package or PHP distribution specifies, normally alongside the PHP executable or in the PHP runtime directory. - Open the
php.inifile reported byphp --ini. - Add or enable:
extension=php_yaml
- Restart Apache, IIS, PHP-FPM, or the terminal process using PHP.
- Verify the extension:
php -m | findstr /I yaml
php --ri yaml
If the command lists YAML and displays extension information, the installation is working.
Do not choose the newest PECL package automatically. The correct package depends on the installed PHP version, architecture, and TS/NTS status. Do not rename php_yaml.dll to yaml.dll, and do not assume that a PHP extension built for one PHP release works with another.
If the correct files are present but PHP still reports “specified module could not be found,” reinstall the complete PHP distribution or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable required by that PHP build. Install the runtime only from Microsoft’s official package source.

Lua for Windows distributions included yaml.dll among their installed files. A partial uninstall, failed update, or deleted application folder can therefore produce this error.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Locate Lua for Windows or the Lua-based application.
- Select Repair if the option exists.
- Otherwise, uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer or obtain the current installer from the project’s official publisher.
- Install the complete distribution to its normal directory.
- Start the application from its shortcut.
If a Lua script or developer tool still fails, confirm that its executable points to the newly installed directory. Restoring only yaml.dll may leave Lua modules, executables, or other dependencies missing.
The same approach applies to a game or development tool: repair the complete package, not just the named DLL.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
If yaml.dll vanished suddenly, Windows Security may have quarantined it.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection related to the application directory.
- Check the file path and detection details.
- Verify that the original application came from its legitimate publisher.
- Scan the complete application folder.
- Restore the file only if its source and safety are confirmed.
Microsoft documents the Protection History workflow in its Windows Security guidance.
If the source is uncertain, do not restore the DLL. Uninstall the application, scan Windows, and reinstall it from the official publisher instead.
Fix 5: Resolve architecture or dependency mismatches
A 32-bit executable requires a 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit executable requires a 64-bit DLL. The bitness of Windows does not determine the correct file because 64-bit Windows can run 32-bit applications.
For PHP, use:
php -i | findstr /I "Architecture Thread Safety"
For another program, check its documentation or inspect the executable with a trusted PE inspection tool.
A DLL can also be present while one of its dependencies is missing. The Windows loader may still identify yaml.dll in the error. Possible dependencies include a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime or another application-specific library.
The correct response is to reinstall the application’s official runtime bundle. Do not place both 32-bit and 64-bit copies in system folders. That can create DLL search-order conflicts and make the original problem harder to diagnose.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers when the application depends on them
A driver is not normally the owner of yaml.dll, but a game, graphics tool, or hardware utility may fail during a damaged installation or update. Update the relevant driver from the hardware or application vendor.
For graphics drivers:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- If the problem began after an update, open Properties → Driver and use Roll Back Driver, when available.

Reinstalling the application that owns yaml.dll remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that program.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when broader damage exists
SFC and DISM normally repair protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They do not normally recreate a third-party application-owned yaml.dll.

Use them when several Windows programs fail, Windows updates are damaged, or other system files are also reporting errors.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft describes this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance and its Windows image repair documentation.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what system issues are present before you repeat manual SFC and DISM checks; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns yaml.dll.
Do not register or download yaml.dll blindly
yaml.dll is a normal runtime/library DLL, not generally a COM or ActiveX component. regsvr32 is therefore not a general repair command for it. Run regsvr32 only when the owning vendor explicitly confirms that the DLL exports DllRegisterServer.
Copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is also unsafe. It can place an application library in a system search path, create conflicts, and still leave the correct dependency missing.
Avoid random DLL download websites. Their files may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have unknown provenance, or belong to a different LibYAML build. Use the affected application’s official installer, the official PHP package source when the problem is PHP, or the original launcher’s repair function.
If reinstalling does not work
Capture these details before escalating:
- The full error text.
- The failing executable’s complete path.
- The path where the program expects
yaml.dll. - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the file exists but fails to load.
- Whether the error began after an update, cleanup, reinstall, or antivirus event.
- Any other missing dependency named in logs.
If only one Windows account is affected, test the application from a new local account. A damaged profile, altered PATH, or per-user installation may be involved.

- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next → Finish.
System Restore can revert applications, drivers, and settings while leaving personal files unchanged. If antivirus detects suspicious files, several applications lose DLLs, or the application directory contains unknown executables, perform a full security scan and back up important data before restoring anything.

FAQ
Is yaml.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is normally supplied by a third-party application and is not a standard Windows component.
Is every yaml.dll a LibYAML file?
No. LibYAML is the strongest common association, but different vendors can reuse the basename for different builds.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Install or repair the application that requires it.
Does regsvr32 yaml.dll fix the error?
Usually not. This runtime DLL is not normally registered as a COM component.
Why does PHP name php_yaml.dll when the error mentions yaml.dll?
php_yaml.dll is the PHP extension. It may depend on a separate yaml.dll runtime or another library, so the loader message does not always name the physical file that is missing.
Will SFC restore yaml.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not third-party application files.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the program requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that program from its official source with the correct architecture and runtime dependencies.
