Yes. A 2014 demonstration showed Game Boy Color games running on a Samsung Galaxy Gear Live smartwatch. It used the VGB emulator and a separate MOGA Bluetooth controller. That proved the idea was technically possible; it did not make the watch a practical handheld or establish compatibility with every Android Wear device—or today’s Wear OS watches.
What the 2014 demonstration showed
On October 13, 2014, 9to5Google reported that Corbin Davenport had run the VGB emulator on a Samsung Galaxy Gear Live, then an Android Wear watch. The report named a MOGA controller as the input device and showed Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Crystal, Tetris, and Super Mario Bros. The article also embedded a video demonstration.
The report described Pokémon Gold as appearing to run without noticeable lag. That is an observation of the demonstration, not a measured frame-rate or latency test. The evidence supports a specific claim: the emulator was shown operating on the Gear Live, with a separate controller. It does not establish that Android Wear officially supported Game Boy games, that every title worked equally well, or that every watch could run them.

In this setup, the watch supplied the screen and computing platform; the MOGA controller supplied physical buttons. That distinction matters. A smartwatch display is very small, and touch controls would leave little room to see the game while playing. The external controller made input more plausible, but also made the setup less self-contained and less convenient than a handheld console.

The contemporary report does not identify the exact MOGA model, explain its pairing procedure or button mapping, or provide an installation transcript. It points readers to Davenport’s blog for a guide, but the report itself is not a complete, reproducible tutorial. Exact historical steps should not be assumed to work on a different watch or software version.
Could you repeat it on a watch today?
The demonstration used the name Android Wear, the platform branding at the time. Google later used Wear OS; the names mark a change in era, not a promise of backward compatibility. The 2014 result does not show that VGB is currently available, that an old emulator will install on a current watch, or that a phone-oriented emulator package will work on a watch.

Compatibility would depend on the exact watch and software, the emulator’s availability and support for that Android version and processor architecture, storage and file access, and whether the watch accepts the controller’s Bluetooth input profile. Screen orientation, sound, button mapping, save behavior, and sustained performance would also need testing. The original report supplies no measurements of battery life, heat, long-session stability, or save reliability.

If you are considering this as a tinkering project, check those details for your specific device before spending money or relying on old instructions. An emulator opening is not the same as a game loading correctly, controls working comfortably, or the watch handling a long session. The 2014 article is evidence of a historical proof of concept, not a current compatibility guide or a reason to buy a particular watch.

Game files and legality
An emulator and the game files it loads are separate things. Use only files you are legally entitled to use, and do not assume that personal backup rules are identical in every country. The original report does not address copyright or provide a basis for downloading commercial game files from unofficial sources.

- Emulator will not install: Check the exact watch model, Android version, processor support, installation restrictions, and available storage. Do not assume a phone APK is watch-compatible.
- A game will not load: Confirm that the emulator supports the game’s format and that the file is accessible and valid. Compatibility with one demonstrated game does not guarantee compatibility with every title.
- The controller will not connect: Check the controller’s compatibility with the watch and its Bluetooth input support; disconnecting other devices may help. The historical report does not give a verified pairing sequence.
- Controls or screen are awkward: Try supported button remapping or orientation options, but expect the tiny display and separate controller to remain practical limitations.
- Performance or battery behavior is poor: Test briefly before a longer session and watch for battery drain or heat. The cited demonstration did not report sustained-performance measurements.
For historical context, the clearest takeaway is simple: a Galaxy Gear Live was shown running Game Boy-era software in 2014. Whether any other watch can do the same is a separate question that requires device-specific testing.
