Yes. Minecraft’s 2026 April Fool’s update, called the Herdcraft Update, is a real, playable snapshot for Java Edition—not just a joke video or concept. Enable snapshots in the Minecraft Launcher, select Latest Snapshot, and create a separate test world. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds, so do not use your main save without a backup.
What is Minecraft Herdcraft?
Herdcraft replaces Minecraft’s conventional inventory with the game world itself. Mojang’s official description puts it plainly: “The inventory is gone, and it’s gone for good. Now, the world is your inventory.”
When you break a block, its spirit can be broken and the block can be commanded to follow you. Items and blocks become controllable, world-based companions rather than entries in a normal inventory. The update also lets you place a crafting grid in the world and direct blocks into its recipe slots.
How combat works
Weapons and other items can be ordered to attack enemies. Coverage of the snapshot describes these sentient items as pseudo-summons or pets that can gather materials and fight, including against the Ender Dragon. This is fundamentally different from standard Minecraft combat, where items remain in your inventory until you equip or use them.

How to play the Herdcraft snapshot
You need Minecraft Java Edition. The current PC product is sold as Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition, but Herdcraft itself runs only through Java Edition.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the Installations tab.
- Enable the option to show or use snapshots.
- Select Latest Snapshot and launch it.
- Create a new test world. Back up existing worlds and keep snapshot saves in a separate folder.
Mojang says the Herdcraft snapshot is also playable on Java Realms. Snapshot availability and behavior apply to Java Edition, not the Bedrock version on consoles, mobile devices or Windows.

Can the snapshot delete or corrupt your world?
Mojang warns that snapshots are testing versions and may corrupt worlds. That does not mean every player will lose a save, but it does mean you should treat the snapshot as unsafe for irreplaceable worlds.
- Back up any world before opening it with the snapshot.
- Use a new test world whenever possible.
- Store snapshot saves separately from your regular release worlds.
- Do not assume a snapshot world will work correctly after opening it in another version.
How to return to normal Minecraft
In the Minecraft Launcher, switch the installation back to Latest Release. Keep the Herdcraft world separated from your ordinary saves rather than repeatedly opening the same world in both the snapshot and the stable release.

What the April Fool’s update means for players
Herdcraft is playable, but it is not a permanent replacement for the standard game. Its central experiment is making the environment function as your inventory: blocks and items become entities you can direct, use for crafting and send into combat. The unusual mechanics are the reason to try it, while the snapshot warning is the reason to isolate it from important saves.
