To restart a YouTube stream after a VPS reboots, configure the encoder process to launch through the VPS operating system’s service manager, then verify that it reconnects to YouTube with the current stream URL and key. YouTube’s auto-start setting does not launch a stopped process on your VPS: it can start streaming only after the encoder is running and sending a feed.
Why a VPS reboot stops a 24/7 stream
A command launched in a terminal or temporary shell session is not necessarily started again when the VPS boots. It may also stop when that session ends. The operating system must manage the encoder as a boot-enabled service, with restart behavior suited to the failures you need to recover from.
That is only half the chain. Once the encoder process is running, it must be able to read its media and configuration, reach YouTube over the network, and authenticate with the current stream key. A service that is active locally can still fail to deliver a healthy feed.
Make the encoder start at boot
Identify your setup before changing it
First establish the VPS operating system and version, the encoder (such as FFmpeg or OBS), the exact command or configuration it uses, and how the video source is stored. These details determine the service definition. Do not copy a service file or command blindly: executable paths, users, working directories, arguments, and configuration locations vary.

Use the VPS service manager
On Linux, systemd is one common way to run an encoder as a boot-enabled service. A third-party unattended FFmpeg project demonstrates this implementation pattern and describes recovery from host reboots, network interruptions, and encoder crashes: systemd/FFmpeg implementation example. Treat it as an example to adapt, not a tested recipe for your VPS or an endorsement by YouTube. Consult your VPS distribution’s documentation if it does not use systemd.
Configure the service to run under the intended account, start after boot, use the correct working directory and environment, and restart under the failure conditions you intend to handle. Make sure that account can read the media and configuration and can write any required logs. A restart policy can relaunch a failed process; it cannot fix a bad command, inaccessible file, invalid key, or unavailable network by itself.

Keep credentials and media accessible
The encoder needs the media source, YouTube server URL, and stream key after every reboot. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential/address that tells an encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Store it in the service’s protected configuration rather than exposing it in public scripts, logs, or screenshots. Limit access to the configuration to the account and administrators who need it.
Verify that YouTube receives the restarted stream
- Check the service after reboot. Use the service manager’s status and logs to confirm whether the encoder launched, which command it ran, and whether it exited or is restarting repeatedly. Exact commands depend on the operating system and service name.
- Compare the encoder settings with YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the configured server URL and stream key match the current values. If you reset the key, update the encoder configuration; a service restart cannot make an old key valid again. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Check the receiving side. Open Live Control Room and inspect the preview, stream status, health indicators, and any specific error message. A running process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. See YouTube’s live-control guidance.
- If the feed is missing or unhealthy, inspect the encoder and connection. Check that the encoder can open and play the media, review its errors and CPU load, use a current encoder version, and test outbound connectivity from the VPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these checks: troubleshoot live-stream issues.
Keep YouTube’s auto-start setting in its proper role
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. YouTube’s wording is: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” See Manage live stream settings. This setting is not a VPS boot mechanism: the service manager must first start the encoder, and the encoder must send a valid feed.

Common reboot problems and fixes

Plan for long-running streams and archives
YouTube’s encoder guide says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. That statement does not establish that a single continuous broadcast beyond 12 hours will be archived in the same way. If the archive matters, check current YouTube guidance for your stream setup rather than assuming an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast produces one complete archive.
