If your Raspberry Pi drops frames while streaming to YouTube, first check whether the Pi can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate, then distinguish encoder strain from an unreliable upload or a YouTube ingest-setting error. A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is specified for H.264 encoding up to 1080p30—not 1080p60. Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so performance depends on the encoder software and workload. Neither specification guarantees a particular application will sustain a 24/7 stream.
Start by identifying the Pi and the stream profile
Before changing settings, write down the board model, encoder software, codec, resolution, frame rate, target bitrate and keyframe interval. Also note whether the warning appears in the encoder or in YouTube Live Control Room, and when it begins.
- Board: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, Raspberry Pi 5, or another model.
- Profile: for example, H.264 at 1080p30 or 720p30.
- Encoder settings: bitrate mode and target bitrate, plus keyframe interval.
- Failure location: local encoder messages suggest a different issue from YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors.
This distinction matters because a Pi can struggle to encode a profile even when the network is sound; alternatively, the encoder may be keeping up while the upload cannot reliably deliver its output.
Check the board’s encoding limits
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4 Model B’s H.264 capability as 1080p60 decode and 1080p30 encode. Decoding is playback; it does not mean the board can encode a 1080p60 live stream. Compare your actual encode target with the published specification: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications.

Raspberry Pi 5
Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders. That is a different encoding path from the Pi 4 hardware H.264 encode specification, so do not assume the Pi 4 figures describe Pi 5 performance. The camera software’s documented --low-latency option reduces encoding delay, with a slight reduction in coding efficiency and possibly maximum frame rate; the documentation says it still easily achieves 1080p30. Those details apply to the documented camera software, not automatically to third-party streaming encoders. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.
Compare your settings with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s general live-encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and no more than 4 seconds. Its H.264 bitrate ranges include these common profiles:

| H.264 profile | YouTube’s recommended bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode or upload every bitrate in the range. The platform’s complete guidance covers additional resolutions and frame rates: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
If the board or upload cannot sustain the current target, test a lower resolution or frame rate rather than assuming that selecting a bitrate inside YouTube’s range resolves the problem. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the limitation is encoding capacity or delivery bandwidth.

Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the health messages and their timestamps against the moment frames started dropping. YouTube documents errors involving stream format, bitrate, frame rate, resolution and keyframe cadence. A bandwidth warning is a reason to try a lower stream resolution; a format or keyframe warning calls for checking the corresponding encoder setting instead. Consult YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
- Bitrate or bandwidth: test a lower resolution or frame rate, then see whether the health warning clears.
- Frame rate or resolution: confirm the encoder output matches the profile you intended to send.
- Keyframes: check the interval; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4.
- Format: verify the stream uses the settings specified for the selected YouTube ingest configuration.
Run a representative test before leaving it live
YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream. Use the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate and encoder path planned for the long-running broadcast. Include movement and audio like the intended content, and monitor both the local encoder and YouTube’s stream health. A static or brief test may not represent a continuous workload, and the published specifications do not establish a universal 24/7 profile for every board, software version, scene and network.

- Record the current profile and note any local encoder warnings.
- Start a test stream using the intended settings and representative video and audio.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room for timestamped health messages while checking whether the encoder reports dropped frames.
- If the encoder struggles, reduce the workload by testing a lower resolution or frame rate. If YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth, lower the stream resolution and test again.
- Repeat long enough to evaluate the workload you actually plan to run; do not treat a short successful test as proof of indefinite stability.

| Pi 4 is set to encode H.264 at 1080p60 | The published Pi 4 specification lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30; do not confuse its 1080p60 decode figure with encoding. Test a lower frame rate. |
| Pi 5 reports encoding strain | Pi 5 uses software video encoders in Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation. Check the workload and encoder path; the camera software’s low-latency option is not a universal fix for other applications. |
| YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth | Try lowering the stream resolution, as YouTube recommends, and check whether the health message changes. |
| YouTube reports a bitrate, frame-rate, resolution, format or keyframe error | Match the setting named by the health message to the configured output and YouTube’s live-encoder guidance. |
| A short test works, but a long stream drops frames | Repeat a longer representative test and monitor the local encoder and YouTube health messages. The cited specifications do not promise 24/7 stability for every combination of software, workload and network. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without relying on a Raspberry Pi or home connection, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
