If YouTube buffers mostly in the evening on Hathway broadband, compare the same device over Wi-Fi and Ethernet during the problem and again at a quieter time. A repeatable slowdown is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove Hathway congestion: Wi-Fi conditions, household traffic, the device, YouTube playback, and the broadband path can all contribute.
Start by recording what happens during buffering
At the time YouTube usually buffers, note the time, device, room, whether it is on Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet, the playback quality, and any speed-test result. Also note whether downloads, cloud backups, video calls, or other streams are active. Repeat the check at a quieter time with the same device and location so the comparison is meaningful.
Use the TRAI MySpeed App or Portal for broadband measurements if useful. Results can vary with congestion and available bandwidth, as Hathway itself notes in its Broadband FAQ. One fast result—or a high advertised plan speed—cannot establish the performance YouTube receives during the buffering period.
Keep the test conditions with the result: a phone on Wi-Fi in one room is not directly comparable with a computer on Ethernet in another. TRAI says providers must disclose typical speeds in tariff offerings and does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; its FAQ says at least 90% of measured test samples must meet or exceed the declared typical speed. Separate Wi-Fi trouble from the broadband path
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If you can, connect a compatible computer or streaming device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Compare it with Wi-Fi on the same device at about the same time. Hathway’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking whether the connection is wireless or direct LAN and says a cable connection is generally faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi.
This comparison narrows the possibilities; it does not identify the fault by itself. A wired result can still be affected by the router, device, test server, or provider network. If Ethernet playback is stable but Wi-Fi buffers, test near the router and then at the usual viewing spot. Distance, walls, interference, device capability, and other active devices can affect Wi-Fi, according to Hathway’s FAQ.

Try the simple local checks first
- Move the device closer to the router and compare playback again.
- Pause large downloads, backups, video calls, and other high-bandwidth activity for the test. Hathway notes that active devices share available bandwidth and recommends pausing such activity while troubleshooting.
- Try another supported device on the same Wi-Fi. If only one device has trouble, restart it and the YouTube app, reconnect to the network, and check for app or system updates.
YouTube’s official troubleshooting guide also recommends testing near the TV, reducing interference, and minimizing other connected devices.
Check YouTube playback quality and device behavior
YouTube Help currently recommends a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps for HD streaming (accessed 2026). That is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback, a TRAI-mandated minimum, or a diagnosis of your Hathway plan. During a buffering episode, lower the video quality manually and see whether playback becomes stable; then compare with the quality that was buffering.

- In the YouTube player, open the settings menu and choose Quality.
- Select a lower resolution and observe whether buffering changes.
- Quit and reopen YouTube, restart the device, and install available app or system updates.
- Try the same video on another supported device. If only YouTube is affected, compare another service and consider sending feedback to YouTube.
For live programming, YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can cause issues or delay even on a good network. A lower broadcast-delay setting is not a general fix for ordinary viewing buffer problems.
Use the pattern to choose the next step

Contact Hathway with a documented complaint
If several devices remain slow, especially on Ethernet, contact Hathway Broadband at 1800 419 3114. Ask support to log the usual evening time window and review the measurements you recorded. Keep the complaint reference or docket number. Hathway’s Contact Us page describes issuing a unique reference and escalation to its Appellate Authority if a complaint is unresolved within the applicable timeframe or the resolution is unsatisfactory. Check that page for current contact details when you report the issue.

Include the plan and service address, dates and times, device and connection type, playback quality, and whether other household activity was paused. Ask whether the same slowdown appears in their checks; avoid assuming the cause before they investigate.

A plan with more advertised bandwidth may help if measurements show that concurrent household demand exceeds usable capacity. It will not, by itself, repair weak Wi-Fi coverage or an underlying connection fault.
