YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content and may interrupt a stream if it continues after a warning; if the stream is archived, a Content ID claim is made after the broadcast ends. Whether you may stream a particular game soundtrack depends on the rights and the publisher’s current terms—not on looping the track or owning the game.
Why did my YouTube livestream get a Content ID claim?
There are two distinct events to check. While a broadcast is running, YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If it detects a match, YouTube may show a placeholder image and warn you to stop broadcasting the material. If the material remains, the live stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. If you chose to archive the stream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made against the archived video after the broadcast is complete. These timings are described in YouTube’s Copyright issues with live streams.
A live interruption and an archived-video claim can therefore happen in relation to the same broadcast, but they are not the same enforcement action. A standard archived-video claim is not necessarily applied while the stream is still running.
Does a Content ID claim give my channel a strike?
No. A Content ID claim is a rights-management action on a video. Depending on the copyright owner’s policy, the video may be blocked, monetized (sometimes with revenue sharing), or tracked; the result can differ by territory. A copyright strike follows a valid copyright removal request, commonly called a takedown—not the Content ID claim by itself. See YouTube’s Learn about copyright claims.

Content ID compares videos with reference files submitted by approved copyright owners who meet YouTube’s criteria and have exclusive rights in the material used as a reference. A match may lead to the policy chosen by the rights holder; the match alone does not establish that the streamer has permission or that a claim is mistaken. YouTube explains the system in How Content ID works.
Who can claim a video game OST on YouTube?
YouTube has a specific reference-eligibility rule for original video game soundtracks. It defines them as sound recordings created primarily for use in a game, such as an original score or background music, and says these references are valid only when delivered under the game publisher’s content owner. Popular music licensed for use in a game is not included in that original-soundtrack category. This rule concerns who may submit an eligible reference; it does not itself decide whether a streamer has permission to broadcast a track. See Content eligible for Content ID.

More generally, Content ID references must be based on exclusive rights for the territories being claimed. YouTube lists nonexclusive licenses, public-domain and Creative Commons material, and gameplay footage submitted by someone other than the publisher among examples of material that may be ineligible as references. Its reference rules also require distinct content; soundbeds, production loops, compilations, continuous DJ mixes, and full-album recordings are among restricted examples, with individual components expected to be separated. A reference rule for rights holders is not a grant of streaming rights to a creator.
Can I stream a video game soundtrack on a loop?
There is no general permission established by the fact that the music comes from a game, that you own or play a copy of it, or that you repeat it on a loop. Looping does not demonstrate ownership or permission. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to hold the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights. The title, track, license, territory, and publisher policy determine what applies in a specific case; without those details, permission cannot be determined from general platform policy.

For licensed third-party music, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream may still be interrupted without allowlisting, even if you have a license or restrict the broadcast to territories where you hold rights. A license and allowlisting address different issues: the license concerns your permission to use the music, while allowlisting can prevent matching from interrupting the live stream. Review YouTube’s live-stream guidance and its Livestream terms and conditions, then check the game publisher’s current creator or streaming policy and any direct license covering the specific music.
Ordinary live scanning versus special live Content ID matching
Do not confuse YouTube’s ordinary scanning of live streams with the separate Content ID matching feature for live streams. YouTube describes that feature as available only to certain Content Manager partners. Eligibility includes a proven record operating Content ID, time-sensitive content, and a high probability that copies will be livestreamed. Its use requires global rights and exclusive ownership; a stream using the feature cannot contain third-party content such as background music.

| Situation | When it applies | What may happen | Key rights point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary live-stream scan | While a live broadcast is running | Warning and placeholder; interruption or termination if matched content remains | Licensed music may still need channel allowlisting to avoid interruption |
| Special live Content ID matching | While an eligible partner has the feature enabled | Warning, then potentially a static image with no sound; persistent matching may terminate the stream and remove access to live features | Requires global rights and exclusive ownership |
| Archived-stream Content ID claim | After an archived livestream is complete | The video may be blocked, monetized, or tracked, possibly by territory | Inspect the claim and applicable rights rather than inferring permission or error |
YouTube says the special live-matching feature does not create ordinary claims against the live stream; standard Content ID claims apply to matching videos. The feature’s live-match policies do not support tracking, review routing, or match-percentage conditions. Details are in Use Content ID matching on live streams.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check and respond to a claim
- Open the claim details in YouTube Studio. Find the archived video’s Restrictions or claim details. Identify the claimant, the matched content, and the territories affected. A claimant you do not recognize is not, by itself, proof that the claim is invalid. Different claimants may cover different segments or territories.
- Choose a response based on the rights and the result you want. If the claim is valid or you cannot establish your rights, you can leave it in place. Depending on the options available for the video, you may mute or remove the claimed audio, trim the segment, or replace the song.
- Dispute only if you have a sound rights basis. YouTube advises disputing when you are confident you hold all necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate the underlying copyright dispute. A dispute without a valid reason can lead the claimant to request removal; a valid removal request results in a copyright strike.
- For a future licensed stream, ask the owner about allowlisting. Keep documentation of the license scope and territories, and confirm that the relevant channel is allowlisted. Do not assume a license alone prevents live matching.
- Check the exact game and track terms. Publisher policies and music licenses can differ. Confirm the policy currently in force for the game and whether it covers livestreaming, the specific music, monetization, and the territories where you plan to broadcast.
YouTube’s claim guidance describes the available response paths at Learn about copyright claims.
