If a YouTube gaming rerun appears at 360p, first find out whether the cloud encoder is actually sending 360p or whether you are seeing one of YouTube’s playback renditions. Check the encoder’s outgoing resolution and YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health feedback before changing settings. If the encoder output is already degraded, investigate the source and encoding path; if it is clean, ask the cloud provider to check its connection to YouTube.
First determine where the quality drop happens
YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. A viewer selecting or seeing 360p does not, by itself, mean the cloud encoder sent a 360p feed. Compare the encoder’s outgoing resolution with the Live Control Room preview and stream-health feedback. YouTube’s encoder settings guide describes this transcoding behavior.
- Open the cloud encoder’s stream or output status and record the resolution and frame rate it says it is sending.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the same broadcast and check the preview and stream-health messages.
- Compare the two. If the outgoing feed is already 360p or visibly degraded, start with the source and encoder. If it is clean but YouTube’s result is not, investigate the cloud service’s outbound connection and stream destination.
Do not use your home internet speed test to judge a cloud encoder’s connection to YouTube: that is a separate network leg.
If the encoder is sending 360p
Check output resolution and encoding settings
Change the cloud encoder’s output resolution to the intended target, then verify frame rate, codec, bitrate mode and keyframe interval. Confirm that the service is using the intended YouTube stream key and destination. A correctly configured key does not guarantee a particular resolution, so verify the outgoing feed after saving changes.

For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists 720p at 30 fps with a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended bitrate. For comparison, its 360p at 30 fps figures are 0.4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended. These are published reference recommendations, not a guarantee of results or a tested setting for your cloud service. Use a stable bitrate the source and provider can sustain. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than 4 seconds. See the full encoder settings guidance.
Check whether the source or processing profile is limiting quality
If the rerun recording itself is low resolution, or the service scales it down before sending, raising the output setting cannot restore detail that is not present in the feed. Check the source file’s resolution and the cloud service’s scaling or transcoding profile. Review encoder errors and, if the service provides an encoder-side recording or preview, compare it with the YouTube result.

If the encoder output looks good but YouTube does not
Ask the provider to check its outbound path
Have the cloud provider check available upload capacity from the encoder host toward YouTube, dropped frames, outbound connection quality and the configured ingest destination. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% upload headroom. For a cloud encoder, the relevant capacity is the provider’s connection—not your local connection. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.
Match the destination and inspect health messages
Confirm that the service is sending to the correct YouTube event or destination with the intended stream key. Then use Live Control Room health messages to identify whether the problem points to bitrate, connection stability or another ingest issue. Share those messages and the encoder’s output settings with the provider rather than relying only on a viewer’s playback selection.

Run a safe test before making the rerun public
- Set up a private or unlisted test broadcast.
- Use a gameplay segment with representative movement and audio; a static menu may not reveal problems that appear during fast action.
- Check the encoder output and Live Control Room preview and health while the test runs.
- Compare an encoder-side copy with the YouTube result if available. Keep a local source or archive for comparison.
- Only make the rerun public after you have confirmed that the intended output is reaching YouTube cleanly.
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Its archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy for a longer broadcast. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
