If OBS says “encoding overloaded” while you stream a game to YouTube, first find out whether OBS cannot render or encode frames fast enough, or whether the stream is being disrupted on its way to YouTube. For local overload, give OBS more GPU headroom, simplify its scenes, and—if needed—lower output resolution or frame rate. Check network delivery separately rather than treating every stream-health warning as an encoder problem.
What “encoding overloaded” means—and what it doesn’t
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes, while a game may be competing for those same resources. If OBS cannot keep up with the work required for the stream, viewers may see choppy or laggy output. That is different from dropped frames caused by an unreliable upload connection: changing encoder settings alone will not repair a network problem.
Start with OBS Stats or its log and the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Identify whether the warning points to rendering lag or encoding overload, or to network delivery. A generic complaint does not identify the hardware bottleneck by itself. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder output, errors and CPU load, then investigating the connection if the encoder output looks healthy.
Free up GPU headroom before changing quality
Try the least disruptive changes first. OBS’s encoding performance guide, dated June 12, 2021, describes GPU pressure as a common performance issue and recommends reducing the work competing with OBS.

- Cap the game’s frame rate. Set an in-game limit the PC can sustain while OBS is running. Enabling V-Sync may also help, where appropriate. The tradeoff is that the game may run at a lower frame rate than it did without streaming.
- Lower demanding game graphics settings. Reduce GPU-heavy effects or quality options and check whether OBS’s rendering or encoding symptoms improve.
- Close other GPU-intensive apps you recognize. Avoid closing unfamiliar processes simply to free resources.
- On Windows, consider running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick fix for some GPU-overload situations; it is not a guaranteed solution.
Change one thing at a time and observe the same counters again. That helps distinguish a useful adjustment from a change that merely alters how the warning appears.
Reduce OBS’s workload in measured steps
If the game changes do not provide enough headroom, simplify the OBS workload. In OBS Settings → Video, check the two settings below. Make a test after each change; lowering quality reduces work but also changes what viewers receive.

| Setting or workload | Where to check or what to change | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Scene complexity | Review the active scene collection, sources and filters; remove unnecessary items. | Fewer sources and effects mean less compositing work, but may change the scene’s appearance. |
| Output resolution | OBS Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution | A lower output resolution can reduce GPU resources needed, at the cost of image detail. |
| Frame rate | OBS Settings → Video → Common FPS Values | A lower frame rate reduces work. If 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. |
| Base canvas resolution | Keep the base canvas unchanged if possible; reduce it only if GPU resources are severely constrained. | Changing the canvas is more disruptive and may require repositioning sources. |
Do not lower every setting at once. If a 30 fps test resolves the overload, you have evidence that the original target was not sustainable in that workload. If it does not, restore settings as needed and continue checking the actual symptom rather than assuming resolution or frame rate was the cause.
Check the encoder and YouTube ingest target
For YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS ingest, the current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube publishes 6 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 17 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are platform ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain a given stream.

OBS offers software encoding such as x264 and, on supported hardware, hardware encoders. OBS explains that hardware encoding moves encoding work to a specialized GPU component. It may be worth testing if CPU encoding is the constraint, but it is not automatically a fix when a game is already saturating the GPU. Check the actual encoder, errors and load indicators rather than switching on the assumption that hardware encoding is always faster for your setup.
Match the YouTube ingest settings to your codec, resolution and frame rate, then test before going live. YouTube recommends choosing a quality the available upload connection can reliably handle and monitoring stream health during the event. A higher bitrate requires more upload capacity; the 1080p60 H.264 figures above should not be applied blindly to a different codec or target.

Separate upload problems from encoding overload
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status and read its specific message, alongside OBS Stats or logs.
- Inspect OBS’s encoder output, encoder errors and CPU load. If output appears healthy but YouTube reports delivery trouble, test outbound connectivity instead of repeatedly changing encoder presets.
- Run an upload-speed test under conditions resembling your stream and choose a bitrate the connection can reliably sustain, leaving practical headroom for fluctuations and other household traffic.
- If YouTube’s connection test identifies a problem, its troubleshooting guidance says to contact your internet provider.
A speed-test result is not a promise of uninterrupted upload capacity. Monitor YouTube stream health during the actual broadcast as well.

A local recording gives you another copy if the livestream archive is unavailable, but it does not reduce OBS’s encoding or rendering load. Before relying on it, make a short test and confirm the recording file is being created and growing.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends recording a local archive backup and checking that the resulting archive file is present. A separate drive, such as an external SSD, can provide space for recordings; storage preserves a copy, it does not solve overload.
Troubleshooting: symptom to next check
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload | Reduce GPU contention: cap the game, lower demanding graphics settings, close recognized GPU-heavy apps, simplify scenes, then test a lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| 60 fps is not sustainable | Test 30 fps in OBS Settings → Video → Common FPS Values; check whether the overload indicators improve. |
| OBS output appears healthy, but YouTube reports stream-health or delivery trouble | Test the upload connection and use a bitrate the connection can reliably sustain. Follow YouTube’s specific health message; if its connection test finds a problem, contact your provider. |
| YouTube VOD is missing or incomplete | Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours and confirm a local test recording was written successfully. Do not count on YouTube to capture streams beyond its stated archive guidance. |
| A setting change makes sources misaligned | Restore the base canvas if it was changed, or reposition sources to fit the new canvas. Prefer adjusting output resolution before changing the base canvas. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your aim is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than broadcast live gameplay, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not live camera gameplay. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
