For 1080p30, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps with H.264 or 10 Mbps with AV1/H.265; for 1080p60, it recommends 17 Mbps with H.264 or 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval. If you mean uploading a video normally, the relevant figures are different.
Choose the right workflow first
“Pre-recorded stream” can mean either playing a finished program through an encoder into YouTube Live, or uploading a video to your channel as a regular video. The first is a live broadcast: use the live-ingestion table below. The second is a standard upload and uses separate encoding recommendations.
- Pre-recorded program broadcast as Live: configure the encoder or service that sends the program to YouTube Live.
- Regular video upload: encode the file for YouTube’s upload recommendations; do not use the live-stream figures as a substitute.
YouTube’s official live settings are keyed to the ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate. They do not specify a special bitrate table just because the footage was recorded earlier. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the reference for a broadcast; its upload encoding settings cover regular uploads.
Recommended 1080p live bitrate
Choose the row for your frame rate and the column matching the codec actually sent to YouTube. These are YouTube Help’s live-ingestion minimums and recommendations; the recommended value is the target, while the minimum is not the recommended quality setting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Live ingestion format | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For example, if your encoder sends 1080p60 H.264, set the video bitrate to 17 Mbps where your connection can sustain it. If it sends 1080p30 AV1 or H.265, target 10 Mbps. Don’t choose a figure from the other codec’s column: the recommended rates differ.
Pair the bitrate with the right encoder settings
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance applies to live ingestion, including a stream made from prerecorded footage. Use settings compatible with the codec and frame rate you are sending.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Resolution and frame rate: match the source when practical. For example, send 1080p30 material at 1080p30 rather than needlessly converting it to 60 fps.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1.
- Rate control: CBR, or constant bitrate.
- Keyframes: set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds between keyframes.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR.
- Ingest protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP.
Where the encoder has a keyframe interval field measured in frames rather than seconds, convert using the frame rate: a 2-second interval is 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Check the encoder’s own labeling, since some interfaces use “GOP” or “keyframe distance.”
Calculate the upload bandwidth you need
The video bitrate is not the whole network load. Add audio and any backup feed to the outgoing total, then leave headroom. YouTube advises that total outgoing bitrate stay below available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. For a single 1080p30 H.264 feed targeting 14 Mbps, 20% headroom means planning for at least 16.8 Mbps of sustained upload capacity before allowing for any additional outgoing stream traffic. This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Measure upload capacity on the actual connection and at a time representative of the broadcast.
- Include audio and any simultaneous backup feed in the total outgoing bitrate.
- Test the stream in advance and watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real program, then monitoring stream health. A static test screen alone may not expose problems that appear during the actual content.

Use the upload guidance when the finished file is being published as a normal video. A live broadcast sends an ongoing encoded signal to YouTube, so its ingest settings apply even when the program itself was recorded earlier.

YouTube supports encoder software as well as standalone hardware. A software encoder is a suitable route when your computer can play and encode the program reliably. Standalone hardware is relevant when a production needs dedicated equipment or external audio/video hardware; it is not a requirement for every 1080p stream. YouTube’s encoder overview describes encoder use for external hardware and more advanced productions, without endorsing a particular model.

For prerecorded footage that needs to run continuously, the production setup also determines whether the computer and connection must stay available for the whole broadcast. If you want the program to continue without leaving a home computer running, a cloud service is another workflow.
Troubleshooting 1080p live-stream settings
- Stream health reports instability: check that sustained upload capacity exceeds the total outgoing bitrate with the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the bitrate if the connection cannot support the selected rate reliably.
- Bitrate is below YouTube’s target: confirm the codec and frame rate first, then compare against the correct table cell. A 1080p label alone does not determine the recommended bitrate.
- Motion looks poor despite selecting 1080p: verify that the encoder is sending the intended frame rate and codec, and that bitrate control is CBR at the appropriate recommended value. Test with representative movement.
- Keyframe setting is unclear: set a 2-second interval, and make sure the interval does not exceed 4 seconds. If the interface asks for frames, calculate from the selected frame rate.
- Regular upload instructions don’t match the encoder: check whether you are broadcasting to YouTube Live or uploading a finished video. Live ingestion and normal uploads use different recommendations.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube program that should stay live without keeping a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed. See StreamNeo or its plan details, then start your free day.
