YouTube Live 1080p vs. 720p: Bitrate for a Text-Heavy Playlist

For text-heavy YouTube Live playlists, 1080p offers more source detail, but the right choice depends on codec-specific bitrate targets and reliable upload bandwidth.

For a text-heavy YouTube Live playlist, start at 1080p if your upload connection can reliably sustain the bitrate with headroom: at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. If that connection is inconsistent, 720p at 30 fps is a sounder choice—8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265—and text designed to remain readable at the expected player size. The resolution recommendation for fine text is a practical inference from available source detail, not a YouTube-published text-legibility test.

1080p or 720p: which should you choose?

1080p provides more source pixels than 720p, giving small labels, playlist titles, and fine typography more detail to work with. That makes it the stronger starting point when viewers need to read small text. It does not guarantee legibility: text size, contrast, layout, player size, and playback conditions also matter.

Choose 720p when your upload bandwidth cannot reliably support the 1080p target plus network headroom, or when your text is large and clear at the size viewers are likely to watch. A stable, legible 720p stream is preferable to an unstable 1080p stream.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so viewers may not all watch at the ingest resolution. Treat your resolution as the source quality you provide, not a promise about every viewer’s playback.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrates

YouTube’s live ingest recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are in megabits per second (Mbps); they are not universal minimums for readable text.

Source setting AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, verified in 2026. The codec matters: do not select a target based on resolution alone. Check which codec your encoder actually sends. For example, at 1080p30, the recommended target is 14 Mbps for H.264 but 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Allow upload bandwidth headroom

The recommended bitrate is not the only upload capacity your connection needs. YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate and notes that shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Check your actual upload capacity and account for other devices or simultaneous streams; do not plan to run at the full measured maximum. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

If the connection cannot sustain the target with that margin, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than relying on a bitrate your network cannot consistently deliver. For a text-heavy layout, also consider enlarging the text and improving its contrast before dropping resolution.

Test text and stream health before going live

  1. Set the intended output. Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec, then confirm the encoder is actually sending those settings. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and recommends testing before an event.
  2. Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test under realistic network conditions. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate and account for shared use.
  3. Inspect the preview at a realistic size. Check the smallest important text in the YouTube preview, then judge whether it remains readable at approximately the player size your audience will use. This text-specific check applies YouTube’s general preview advice to your layout; it is not a published YouTube font-size test.
  4. Test representative content. Include the audio and movement viewers will encounter in the playlist, not just a static opening frame.
  5. Monitor stream health while live. Keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube’s stream health indicators so you can respond if the connection or ingest becomes unstable.

Do not confuse live bitrates with upload bitrates

Uploading a video file and sending a live stream use different recommendations. For SDR uploads, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates; for 720p uploads, it recommends 5 Mbps and 7.5 Mbps, respectively. Those are upload-encoding figures, not live ingest targets. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Troubleshooting bitrate and text problems

  • The stream drops frames or looks unstable: The upload connection may not consistently sustain the stream bitrate, especially if the network is shared. Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions, preserve the 20% margin, and reduce resolution or frame rate if needed.
  • The encoder target seems wrong: Check both the codec and frame rate before choosing a bitrate. The recommended targets differ between H.264 and AV1/H.265 and between 30 fps and 60 fps.
  • Text is difficult to read: Inspect the smallest essential text at realistic playback size. Increase its size or contrast and simplify the layout; if detail is still inadequate and bandwidth allows, test 1080p.
  • The preview looks sharp but some viewers report softness: YouTube transcodes live streams to multiple output formats. Viewer playback may differ from the ingest resolution, so do not assume all viewers receive the same output.
  • You are using an upload bitrate chart for a live stream: Replace it with the live encoder targets above. Upload and live guidance describe different workflows.
