For a 4K (2160p), 60 fps YouTube Live stream from a GeForce RTX 4060, start with NVIDIA NVENC, AV1, 35 Mbps video bitrate, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and RTMPS. Use H.265/HEVC at the same 35 Mbps if AV1 is unavailable; YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 50 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular game, PC or connection can sustain 4K60.
Recommended 4K60 settings for an RTX 4060
The RTX 4060 supports AV1 encoding on its eighth-generation NVENC hardware, making AV1 a suitable starting codec for SDR when your streaming software and YouTube setup offer it. NVIDIA lists the card with “NVIDIA Encoder (NVENC) | 1x 8th Generation” and “AV1 Encode | Yes” in its GeForce RTX 4060 specifications. That confirms hardware capability, but does not ensure AV1 appears in every software configuration.
| Setting | Starting value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution and frame rate | 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps | YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. |
| Encoder | NVIDIA NVENC | The RTX 4060 has one eighth-generation NVENC encoder. |
| Codec | AV1 for SDR, if available | H.265/HEVC and H.264 are alternatives listed by YouTube. |
| Video bitrate | AV1 or H.265: 35 Mbps; H.264: 50 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended 4K60 live ingest values. This is video bitrate, before audio and network overhead. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s stated bitrate encoding setting. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | YouTube lists these audio settings. 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | YouTube’s recommended SDR color space and bit depth. |
| HDR | H.265/HEVC, 10-bit | YouTube’s guidance recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in the listed settings. |
| Latency | Normal | YouTube’s 4K live mode does not offer the option to improve for low latency. |
These encoder, bitrate, protocol, audio, color and latency recommendations come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; the NVENC and AV1 hardware capability is from NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 specifications.
Choose the codec that fits your stream
| Codec | YouTube’s 4K60 video bitrate recommendation | HDR guidance | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 | 35 Mbps | Not supported for HDR in YouTube’s listed guidance | Good starting choice for SDR if NVENC and the software/platform path expose AV1. |
| H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | YouTube recommends H.265, 10-bit | Use for HDR, or as an alternative to AV1 if available. |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | Not the codec specified in YouTube’s HDR recommendation | Use if the streaming setup does not offer AV1 or H.265. |
The cited guidance establishes recommended ingest bitrates and HDR support, not a universal picture-quality winner. Codec availability depends on the software and stream setup; do not assume an encoder option will appear just because the RTX 4060 can encode AV1.

Set up NVENC in OBS
In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the output mode to Advanced to expose encoder controls. Exact encoder labels can vary with OBS version, driver and available stream path; choose the NVIDIA NVENC encoder and codec that YouTube and your setup support. NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS guide discusses NVENC configuration and platform codec compatibility.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and common FPS value to 60. If the source or game cannot sustain that output, use a lower output resolution or frame rate rather than assuming the target is stable.
- Select NVENC and the codec. Under Settings > Output > Streaming, select the NVIDIA NVENC encoder. Choose AV1 for SDR if offered; use H.265/HEVC or H.264 if AV1 is not available. For HDR, follow YouTube’s H.265/10-bit guidance.
- Enter the matching video bitrate. Set CBR and enter 35,000 Kbps for AV1 or H.265, or 50,000 Kbps for H.264. These are YouTube’s recommended 4K60 video bitrates; the audio stream and protocol overhead use additional bandwidth.
- Set keyframes. Enter a 2-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Configure audio and color. For stereo, use AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use AAC if sending 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS. For SDR, use Rec. 709 at 8-bit.
- Configure YouTube as the service. In Settings > Stream, select YouTube and connect your account or enter the stream key provided by YouTube. Use RTMPS where the setup offers the protocol. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Test before the event. Start a test stream with representative gameplay motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages. Verify the selected resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate before relying on the setup for a live event.
Check upload capacity and system load
For 35 Mbps video, NVIDIA’s OBS guide suggests keeping stream bitrate around 75% of measured upload speed, which implies roughly 47 Mbps of measured upload capacity. For 50 Mbps video, the same rule of thumb implies roughly 67 Mbps. These are derived planning figures, not YouTube requirements or guarantees; shared household traffic, audio and protocol overhead add demand. Use a wired connection where practical and measure upload under the network conditions expected during the stream.

If 4K60 is unstable, first investigate the encoder load, game GPU load, network capacity and capture/output setup. Raising bitrate does not fix an overloaded encoder or a connection that cannot reliably send the stream. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the target, then retest under representative gameplay conditions. During a live event, keep an eye on YouTube stream health and its messages.
Latency and HDR limitations
YouTube states that its 4K live mode does not provide the option to improve for low latency; 4K streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency. If low latency is more important than 4K output, consider whether a lower-resolution stream better fits the event. For HDR, use the YouTube-recommended H.265/HEVC, 10-bit path; do not select AV1 on the assumption it supports HDR in YouTube’s listed settings.

Common problems and fixes
- AV1 is missing from OBS. The RTX 4060 supports AV1 encode, but software, driver and stream-path availability can still determine whether the option appears. Check for an available NVENC AV1 option and, if absent, use H.265 or H.264 where supported.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames. Check upload capacity and competing network use, then inspect encoder and game GPU load. Test again; reduce resolution or frame rate if the setup cannot sustain 4K60.
- The picture is not 4K60. Verify both the OBS output resolution and frame rate, then check the stream’s ingest settings and health in YouTube. A 4K60 target in OBS alone does not establish that the full system and connection are delivering it reliably.
- Bitrate is set to 35 Mbps but the setup uses H.264. YouTube’s 4K60 recommendation for H.264 is 50 Mbps. Select AV1 or H.265 for the 35 Mbps recommendation if available, or use the H.264 recommendation and ensure upload capacity can support it.
- HDR does not work with AV1. YouTube’s listed HDR guidance calls for H.265/HEVC at 10-bit and does not support AV1 for HDR; select the appropriate HEVC path.
- Audio is absent or incompatible. Check that the audio encoder is AAC or MP3 and the stereo settings match 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
