To add ad cue points to a YouTube live stream, enable monetization for the stream in YouTube Studio, choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual mid-rolls, then use Live Control Room to insert breaks if you chose Manual. A cue point is only an opportunity for YouTube to show an ad: it does not guarantee an ad or revenue.
Before adding live ad breaks
Your channel must be eligible for monetization, and monetization must be turned on for the stream. To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form and live videos, YouTube requires creators to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Ad suitability policies can also affect whether a stream earns.
YouTube Help explains the requirements in Choose how you want to monetize. Enabling a break does not override these prerequisites.
Turn on monetization and choose a mid-roll mode
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Either start a stream from the Stream tab or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit > Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On, then choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for live mid-rolls.
Labels and placement can vary by locale, and YouTube may change the interface. If a setting is not visible, check the stream’s Edit and Monetization controls in Live Control Room.

Choose the right ad-break mode
| Mode | Who controls timing | How breaks happen | Control and viewer experience | Earnings context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube’s systems | YouTube identifies natural breakpoints; choose Low, Medium, or High frequency. | Less precise creator timing. YouTube describes safeguards including a 10-minute pause with Delay ads, and snoozing breaks for everyone during high-engagement moments. | YouTube recommends this option. It reports higher average instream ad revenue per hour among channels using live automatic mid-rolls than among channels that did not; this is not a guarantee for an individual stream. |
| Scheduled | You choose a fixed interval. | Select breaks every 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Predictable cadence, but breaks may not align with natural pauses in gameplay or commentary. | YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with automatic mid-rolls. |
| Manual | You choose each break. | Insert breaks while streaming through Live Control Room. | Most direct timing control; you decide when to pause the content for a break. | YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with automatic mid-rolls. If you insert no breaks, no mid-roll ads will be served. |
For a game stream with frequent natural pauses, automatic mode may suit creators who prefer YouTube to select opportunities. Scheduled breaks can be easier to plan around, while manual breaks are useful when a creator wants to wait for a menu, match end, or other deliberate pause.
Insert a manual cue point while live
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- When you reach a suitable pause, use the ad insertion control to insert a mid-roll break.
- Return to the stream content after the break opportunity; viewers may not all receive an ad.
YouTube also identifies an Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional way to trigger ad insertion. It is not required: Live Control Room supports the workflow.

Protect important moments from automatic breaks
In automatic mode, use Delay ads when a key moment is about to happen. YouTube says this pauses automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears in Live Control Room before automatic breaks resume. This feature does not suppress breaks you insert manually.
YouTube also describes automatic safeguards that can limit disruption for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze breaks for everyone during high-engagement moments. These controls manage timing; they do not promise that every viewer sees the same ad or that an ad is served.

What cue points mean for revenue
YouTube Help states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Some viewers may see an ad at a break, others may see it at another time, and some may continue watching without one. Ad delivery depends on the ad system, and a cue point itself does not create earnings.
YouTube reported an average “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour” comparing channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads with channels that did not, across 207 countries, in a January 2024 Help-page statement. This is YouTube’s reported group comparison, not a causal guarantee or forecast for an individual channel. YouTube says scheduled or manual mid-rolls may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance and its explanation of mid-roll ad breaks.

Review live ad performance
Use YouTube Analytics and filter for Live to review revenue from live streams and their replays. Treat results as stream-specific performance: ad delivery varies, so one stream’s revenue does not establish what the next stream will earn.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate way to automate the playback: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not insert ad cue points for you; configure monetization and ad breaks in YouTube Studio.
