Use YouTube Studio to monitor a live stream while it is running, then compare its post-stream discovery, audience, viewing depth and participation reports with similar broadcasts. No single figure—especially peak concurrent viewers—explains performance on its own. The useful question is where viewers found the stream, whether they clicked, how long they watched and how those signals compare with your channel’s relevant history.
Where to find YouTube Live analytics
During a live stream
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to monitor stream status and real-time audience measures. For encoder streams, documented metrics include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views and average view duration. Mobile interfaces expose a different set of measures. Treat status and stream health as production diagnostics; audience measures describe how viewers are responding.
After the stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on desktop.
- Open Content, then select Live.
- Select the stream you want to review and open Analytics.
The quick post-stream snapshot can include views, subscribers gained during the stream, total watch time, peak concurrent viewers, duration, average view duration and reactions. YouTube Analytics can also provide video-level reports for audience retention, traffic sources, playback locations, devices, demographics, peak concurrents and chat messages. The exact reports available depend on the interface, report, filters and stream format. You can filter Analytics content as Live, On demand, or Live & on demand.
Which metrics matter—and what they can tell you
YouTube’s own way of framing viewer behavior is appeal, engagement and satisfaction. Treat these as stages for investigating a stream, not proof that a particular metric caused a viewer’s decision.

A repeatable workflow for improving future streams
- Check discovery and packaging. Compare impressions, CTR and traffic sources with relevant prior streams. If the stream had impressions but a comparatively weaker CTR, review whether its title and thumbnail clearly represented what viewers would see.
- Check reach and starts. Review views and “How viewers find your live streams.” Look at the source mix as well as the total: search, browse and suggested traffic reflect different discovery routes. Account for differences in topic and promotion before deciding that a packaging change made the difference.
- Check viewing depth. Compare watch time, average view duration and retention. Find where retention changes, then check what was happening in the broadcast at those points. Use that observation to shape a specific next-stream experiment, such as changing a transition or the order of segments.
- Check audience shape and participation. Review peak and average concurrent viewers alongside chat activity and viewing depth. A high peak alone does not show whether viewers stayed, and quiet chat does not mean nobody was watching.
- Compare like with like and change one thing. Record the topic, format, start time, duration and the single change you want to evaluate. Use consistent date ranges and relevant filters; Advanced Mode can support comparisons or data exports when available. This is a practical comparison method, not a YouTube-mandated experiment protocol.
A compact tracking sheet can group the figures under discovery (impressions, CTR, traffic source), audience (peak and average concurrent viewers), depth (watch time, average view duration, retention) and participation (chat messages or chat rate). Note duration and format so that streams with materially different structures are not treated as direct equivalents.
When numbers appear, exports, and data limits
YouTube says live-stream metrics can appear in YouTube Analytics within minutes after a stream ends and can be downloaded as CSV. Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics should not be treated as identical readings at the same processing stage: Analytics is based on Video ID, is processed and despammed, and measures different information from Live Control Room.

Some Analytics data, including geography, traffic sources or gender, may be limited. Available breakdowns can vary by device, report, filter and stream format, so do not assume every report will be present for every channel or stream.
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not establish a universal target for a “good” live CTR, concurrent audience or watch time. Judge changes against your own relevant history rather than an unsupported industry benchmark. These metrics can guide investigation, but do not by themselves prove why performance changed.

How to read analytics for horizontal and vertical streams
If you stream horizontal and vertical formats together, Live Control Room combines their metrics. To inspect only vertical-stream playback after the first 24 hours, YouTube documents this route:
- In YouTube Studio, select the ended stream and open Analytics.
- Open Advanced Mode.
- Choose Playback location as the breakdown.
- Select a period longer than the first 24 hours, then choose Vertical live feed.
