If OBS’s dropped-frame count is rising, the stream connection to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable, or your configured bitrate may be higher than your connection can reliably sustain. Check OBS’s connection status and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health, then reduce bitrate or troubleshoot the network path as needed. Viewer buffering without OBS dropped frames points to a different problem.
First, identify which problem you have
OBS reports dropped frames
In OBS, check the dropped-frame count and connection indicator while streaming. A count that rises over time, particularly alongside a yellow or red connection indicator, suggests trouble between your computer and the stream ingest server. OBS explains that dropped frames occur when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate; if too many frames are lost, OBS may disconnect. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS does not drop frames
If OBS shows a steady connection and no rising dropped-frame count, do not assume your upload bitrate is the cause. The issue may be on the viewer’s delivery or playback side. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but viewers’ network conditions and devices can still affect playback. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide for this distinct symptom.
The local preview or recording also looks or sounds wrong
Check the OBS preview and make a short local recording. If those are impaired too, investigate your sources, encoder errors, and CPU load before focusing on internet upload capacity. YouTube recommends checking preview output and encoder load, and trying another encoder if local output is poor. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting steps.

Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings
Read the Live Control Room messages
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream health indicator and its timestamped messages. Warnings about bitrate or format are useful evidence that the stream configuration or incoming signal needs attention. YouTube’s live streaming error messages explain how to interpret incorrect bitrate and format alerts.
Compare your output to the guidance for its codec and format
For H.264, YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists these minimum and recommended bitrates:

| Output format | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 encoder figures, not a measurement of your line’s stable upload capacity or a guarantee that it can sustain the recommended bitrate. YouTube publishes separate figures for AV1 and H.265; consult its current encoder settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. The guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and checking stream health with representative audio and movement.
Make sure the configured bitrate matches the selected ingestion resolution unless you are using a variable-resolution entrypoint. If Live Control Room reports an incorrect bitrate or format, use the error message to check the relevant setting rather than treating the warning as proof of an upload problem.

Test whether your upload connection can sustain the stream
- Measure upload speed. Run a speed test while using the same network and, as far as practical, the same connection setup as your stream. A single result is only a snapshot; available capacity can vary.
- Account for other network use. Your speed-test result is not necessarily all available to OBS. Other devices, downloads, game updates, and household traffic may share the connection.
- Leave headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. Its streaming tips state that stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend room for fluctuations.
- Choose a sustainable setting. If the connection cannot reliably support the stream’s total bitrate, lower OBS’s video bitrate. If needed, lower resolution as well. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee; use a bitrate the connection can maintain reliably while leaving headroom.
Fix common causes, one at a time
Bitrate is too high for available upload capacity
Lower the video bitrate and test again with the same game, audio, and typical movement. If dropped frames stop, the previous setting may have been too demanding for the available connection. The trade-off is lower image quality; reducing resolution may also help when bandwidth is insufficient for the selected output.
Wi-Fi or the network path is unstable
If possible, test with Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If a wired test improves the result, investigate Wi-Fi signal quality, interference, the access point, or router placement. Also check modem and router connectivity. A cable is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix: it will not resolve ISP congestion, an excessive bitrate, or encoder problems.

The ingest server or route may be involved
In OBS, try a different available ingest server and compare the result under similar conditions. If performance changes, the route or selected ingest path may be involved, but one comparison does not prove the root cause.
VPN, security software, or network utilities interfere
OBS lists VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritizing utilities, and outdated network drivers among possible causes. Examples of network utilities include Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software. Temporarily isolate one suspected cause at a time. Restore security protections afterward, and use a targeted exception only if the relevant software or vendor supports it. Check for network-driver updates where appropriate.

Congestion causes brief drops
OBS includes Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) under Settings → Advanced → Network. It can lower bitrate instead of dropping frames when congestion occurs, but it does not repair the underlying connection and may make image quality fluctuate or fall. Treat it as a fallback when the connection issue cannot be resolved, not as a substitute for a stable network.
Encoder output or configuration is at fault
If the local preview or recording looks wrong, check that the chosen encoder is functioning, review encoder errors and CPU load, and try another encoder if necessary. If local output is healthy but YouTube reports a format or bitrate error, verify the stream’s codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and configured bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical troubleshooting order
- Check whether OBS’s dropped-frame count is rising and note its connection indicator.
- Check Live Control Room’s stream health and timestamped warnings.
- Inspect OBS’s preview and a local recording to separate local encoding trouble from delivery trouble.
- Measure upload capacity, account for shared network use, and leave headroom.
- Compare bitrate and output format with YouTube’s guidance; lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain them.
- Test Ethernet, another ingest server, and suspected VPN, security, utility, driver, or router issues one factor at a time.
- Use OBS’s dynamic bitrate option only as a congestion fallback, understanding the quality trade-off.
If outbound connection tests show a problem you cannot resolve locally, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.
