For a 1080p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream encoded with H.264 using x264 veryfast, set the video bitrate to 14 Mbps. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for H.264 at this resolution and frame rate. The recommendation is for H.264 generally; YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate adjustment for the x264 veryfast preset. YouTube’s live encoder settings also recommend CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval.
Recommended bitrate for 1080p30
Use 14 Mbps for video. YouTube lists this as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. Its listed minimum is 5 Mbps for the same format and frame rate. The YouTube guidance does not state a publication year and does not give different values for x264 presets, so veryfast does not change the platform recommendation.
The 5 Mbps figure is a minimum, not the target to choose when your connection and encoder can reliably sustain the recommendation. If 14 Mbps causes dropped frames or unstable delivery, test a lower setting rather than assuming the minimum will look identical.
Set the encoder options
- Video codec: H.264 (x264).
- Preset: veryfast, if that is the preset you have chosen. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendation is not preset-specific.
- Video bitrate: 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps is YouTube’s listed minimum for 1080p30 H.264.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Live protocol: use RTMPS where available; YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
Check your connection before going live
A bitrate setting is only useful if your upload connection can carry the stream consistently. YouTube advises testing upload speed, selecting a quality that is reliable on the available connection, and testing before the broadcast. Its guidance does not specify an official upload-speed headroom multiplier.

- Configure the stream with the planned resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and encoder settings.
- Run a test stream before the event. Include audio and movement similar to what viewers will see; a static test image may not reveal issues that appear during gameplay or other motion.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and alerts during the test, and monitor them during the live broadcast.
- If delivery is unstable, lower the bitrate or resolution until the connection handles the stream reliably, then test again.
Why x264 veryfast does not change the YouTube target
x264’s veryfast setting is an encoder preset, but YouTube’s published figures are general H.264 recommendations. The cited guidance does not prescribe a separate bitrate for veryfast or establish how that preset changes visual quality at a given bitrate. Treat 14 Mbps as YouTube’s target for 1080p30 H.264, then validate your own encoder and network with a test stream.
