YouTube Live Bitrate for 1080p30 on a Raspberry Pi

For YouTube Live at 1080p30, choose bitrate by codec: H.264 uses YouTube’s 5–14 Mbps recommendation; AV1 and H.265 use 4–10 Mbps. Configure CBR, use two-second keyframes and test your Pi’s full setup.

For a 1080p30 YouTube Live stream encoded as H.264, set video bitrate within YouTube’s recommended 5–14 Mbps range. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). If your output codec is AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube’s recommended range is 4–10 Mbps instead. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that every Raspberry Pi, camera, encoder and internet connection can sustain the stream.

Choose the bitrate for the codec you are actually sending

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives different 1080p30 recommendations by codec. Check your encoder’s output codec before choosing a value; do not assume the H.264 row applies to AV1 or HEVC.

Output codec YouTube’s recommended video bitrate at 1080p30
H.264 5–14 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4–10 Mbps

For the common Raspberry Pi camera workflow using H.264, select a value in the 5–14 Mbps range that your encoder and connection can maintain. The recommendation is for the live stream sent to YouTube; YouTube’s separate upload-video bitrate guidance does not set this live ingest value. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Set the other YouTube Live encoder settings

  • Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set an interval of two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Ingest protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.

These are ingest settings. They do not establish which encoder application or command is right for every Pi setup. Confirm that your toolchain can produce the selected codec, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval, then verify the settings shown by the encoder itself.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check which Raspberry Pi encoding path you have

Do not treat every Raspberry Pi as having the same encoding capability. The Picamera2 manual documents its H264Encoder as using the Pi’s built-in hardware through V4L2 and supporting up to 1080p30. That statement describes the documented encoder capability; it should not be generalized to every current Pi model. The manual’s description is available at Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual.

Raspberry Pi’s current camera software guidance says Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoding. It also offers a --low-latency option for real-time streaming; the lower latency trades away some coding efficiency. The Pi 5 software path and a Pi 4 hardware-encoder configuration are not interchangeable assumptions. Consult Raspberry Pi camera software documentation and its H.264 performance note for the relevant model and software path. Performance depends on configuration and workload, so a bitrate recommendation alone cannot establish that a particular Pi will sustain 1080p30.

Test the actual stream before relying on it

  1. Check available upload capacity. Run a speed test on the connection the Pi will use, at a representative time and under realistic network conditions. The stream’s video bitrate is not the entire connection requirement: audio and network variability also use capacity. YouTube does not specify a universal headroom percentage, so do not treat one as an official threshold.
  2. Test with representative content. Run a private or otherwise suitable test using the same resolution, frame rate, codec, audio and scene motion planned for the broadcast. A static test image may not reveal how the real scene behaves.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health. Watch Live Control Room during the test and broadcast for stream-health status and messages. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, lower it within the codec’s recommended range or address the connection or encoder limitation before going live.
  4. Verify the complete pipeline. Raspberry Pi camera software can stream encoded camera video over a network, but that fact alone does not confirm a complete YouTube RTMPS setup. Camera capture, audio, muxing, network stability, configuration and software versions all matter.

YouTube’s live setup and testing guidance is on its encoder settings page. Raspberry Pi camera streaming details are in the camera software documentation.

Troubleshoot common 1080p30 problems

Symptom What to check Practical next step
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops Available upload capacity, network variability and the selected bitrate Retest under realistic network conditions. If capacity is insufficient, reduce the bitrate while staying in YouTube’s recommended range for the codec, or improve the connection.
The encoder cannot sustain 1080p30 Pi model and whether encoding is hardware- or software-based Confirm the model-specific encoding path and test the intended workload. Do not assume a Pi 4 hardware-encoding capability applies to Pi 5 software encoding.
Settings look correct but the YouTube stream still has issues Whether the whole chain is configured, including audio, muxing, protocol and software versions Test the full RTMPS pipeline rather than relying on a camera-network-streaming feature as proof that YouTube ingest is configured correctly.
Latency is a concern on a Pi 5 camera workflow Whether the camera software’s low-latency option is appropriate Consider --low-latency for a real-time streaming scenario, bearing in mind Raspberry Pi’s stated trade-off: lower encoding latency but reduced coding efficiency.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, rather than a live camera feed from the Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream continues from the cloud with the computer off. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
