For a 720p60 YouTube Live stream, set video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. YouTube’s published minimums are 3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265; those are floors, not recommended targets. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and enough upload headroom to carry the stream steadily.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrate for 720p60
The figures below are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. Choose the row for the codec your encoder and hardware can actually send.

Use the recommended figure when your outbound connection can sustain it. A minimum may allow a stream to connect, but it is not the target for consistent 720p60 delivery. The encoder must support the chosen codec, and your available YouTube ingest options may depend on your setup.
Set the encoder for a 720p60 live stream
- Set resolution and frame rate. Choose 1280×720 progressive at 60 frames per second (720p60).
- Select a supported codec. Use H.264 at 8 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 at 6 Mbps, according to the table above and the encoder’s capabilities.
- Choose CBR. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate for live streaming.
- Set keyframes to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport.
- Configure audio and other output settings. Use settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance; the bitrate figures here refer to video ingest, not a combined audio-and-video total.
These are encoder-output settings, not settings for an already uploaded highlight file. For comparison, YouTube recommends 7.5 Mbps for 720p high-frame-rate H.264 uploads, while its live-ingest recommendation is 8 Mbps. The two numbers apply to different stages and workflows.

Check upload capacity before going live
Your outbound upload speed—not the download figure in a speed test—must carry the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. As a practical calculation, a single 8 Mbps video stream needs about 10 Mbps of sustained upload capacity to retain that margin; a 6 Mbps video stream needs about 7.5 Mbps. These calculations apply the 20% margin to the video bitrate and do not account for other traffic competing for your connection.
- Check upload speed from the network and location you will actually stream from.
- Include any simultaneous primary and backup stream in the bandwidth calculation.
- Run a test with representative game motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A speed-test result alone cannot guarantee steady delivery.
- If the stream is unstable, reduce bitrate or resolve network congestion before relying on the broadcast.
YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats suited to viewers’ devices and network conditions, but that does not remove the need for a stable feed from your encoder.

Turn live gaming moments into a highlights playlist
Mark and create highlights
- While live, add stream markers at notable moments where your workflow supports it. A solo streamer can mark moments during play and edit later; a team can work on highlights during the broadcast.
- In YouTube Studio, create a highlight, trim the beginning and end around the moment, set its title, privacy, and description, then create it.
Organize highlights in a playlist
- In YouTube Studio, create a playlist and choose its title, description, and visibility.
- Add the highlight videos from your channel library. You can also add videos using search or a URL.
- Arrange the video order for the sequence you want viewers to watch. You can change the order and add more videos later.
Keep a separate recording for long streams
YouTube may automatically archive a live stream that runs for less than 12 hours. For a stream exceeding 12 hours, YouTube warns that the archive may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy for editing highlights or recovery; YouTube recommends local recording as a backup.
Troubleshooting 720p60 bitrate and highlights
