For a YouTube Live stream encoded in H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, set the video bitrate to 17 Mbps if your upload connection can sustain it reliably. YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the minimum for this format—not the target for best quality. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set keyframes two seconds apart, and test the stream before going live.
Recommended bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance gives H.264 1080p60 a recommended bitrate of 17 Mbps and a minimum of 6 Mbps. These are live-ingestion settings: they describe the video signal sent from your encoder to YouTube, not the bitrate for uploading a prerecorded video. The table does not state a publication or revision date. YouTube’s live encoder settings
Treat 17 Mbps as the quality target only when your upload connection can carry the stream consistently. YouTube advises selecting settings that are reliable for your available connection, testing upload bitrate, and ensuring the total stream bitrate does not exceed available upload bandwidth. How 1080p60 compares with nearby H.264 formats
Use the row that matches the resolution and frame rate your encoder will send. The values below are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations for H.264, not prerecorded upload targets. YouTube live encoder settings

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Live ingestion format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
If your connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended 1080p60 bitrate, consider reducing resolution or frame rate to a format your connection can support. Simply entering a higher bitrate than the connection can carry does not improve delivery.
Encoder settings to use
For an H.264 1080p60 live stream, configure the encoder against YouTube’s live guidance as follows. YouTube also supports H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, but bitrate recommendations are codec-specific; do not apply the H.264 figures automatically to another codec. YouTube encoder settings

- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for security.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Resolution and frame rate: 1080p at 60 fps.
- Video bitrate: 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum according to YouTube’s table.
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube lists 128 Kbps. For RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 surround, YouTube supports AAC and lists 384 Kbps.
- Advanced video options: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Rec. 709 is listed for SDR.
Encoder software and hardware may label these fields differently. Match the setting by what it controls—such as keyframe interval or rate control—rather than relying on a preset name. For the full current guidance, see YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Check your connection and test before the stream
- Confirm the intended format. Set the output to H.264, 1080p, and 60 fps if that is the format you want viewers to receive.
- Set the live bitrate and encoding behavior. Choose 17 Mbps when the connection can sustain it, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval.
- Allow for the whole stream’s bandwidth. YouTube cautions that the total bitrate being streamed cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Do not judge capacity from the video bitrate alone if the encoder sends audio or other stream data as well.
- Test the upload and stream before the event. YouTube recommends testing before starting the live stream and choosing a reliable quality for the available connection. If the configured stream is unstable, lower the bitrate or use a lower resolution or frame rate that better fits the connection. YouTube’s streaming tips
Common bitrate and configuration problems
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: The connection may not sustain the total outgoing bitrate. Test upload capacity and reduce the bitrate or output format until the stream is reliable.
- The picture looks worse than expected at 1080p60: Check that the encoder is using the 1080p60 H.264 live setting and that its bitrate is not below YouTube’s recommendation without a connection-related reason. The 6 Mbps figure is a listed minimum, while 17 Mbps is the recommendation.
- You copied an upload-video bitrate: Prerecorded uploads use separate encoding guidance. For live streaming, use the live-encoder table rather than the upload recommendations. YouTube’s upload encoding settings
- Your keyframe setting is longer than four seconds: Set the frequency to two seconds as recommended, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Your video bitrate fits, but the connection still does not: Account for total stream bitrate, not only video bitrate, when checking upload capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming a prerecorded video or playlist continuously, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without a computer, OBS, or home internet connection having to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops the uploaded video and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
