For a 1080p30 ambient stream, start with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the codec you send: 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, or 14 Mbps for H.264. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Your upload connection must have enough capacity for the stream plus other network use; YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom.
Recommended bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec
YouTube’s published values are general ingestion recommendations, not a special preset for ambient or low-motion video. Choose the row matching your output resolution and frame rate, then the column matching the codec your encoder actually sends. The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended video bitrates in Mbps; they are not minimums.

YouTube lists lower minimums as well: at 1080p30, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264. Those are minimum figures, not the recommended targets in the table.
Is 10 Mbps enough for 1080p live streaming?
It is YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 video bitrate when the incoming codec is AV1 or H.265. For H.264 at the same resolution and frame rate, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps. Ten Mbps is therefore not a universal 1080p setting: resolution, frame rate, and codec all matter.

Choosing a codec and frame rate
AV1 and H.265 have lower recommended bitrates than H.264 at the listed matching resolutions and frame rates. Use the recommendation for the codec actually configured in your encoder, and check that your encoder and workflow support that format. A still or slowly changing relaxation scene generally does not need 60 fps; using the source’s actual frame rate avoids encoding duplicate frames. That is a practical choice, not a YouTube ambient-content preset.
Encoder settings for a stable stream
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS when available.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set an interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced settings recommend stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth in YouTube’s advanced recommendations.
These are platform encoder recommendations. Available control names and codec options vary by encoder, so match the underlying value rather than relying on a particular menu label.

Check upload capacity before going live
The bitrate is only workable if your sustained outbound connection can carry it. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Treat that as capacity for network variation and competing traffic, not as an extra allowance to stream above the connection’s capacity.
- Choose the output resolution, frame rate, and codec first, then set the corresponding recommended video bitrate from the table.
- Measure upload speed under the conditions you expect during the broadcast, rather than relying only on a best-case result.
- Account for every simultaneous stream and other upload traffic on the shared connection. Confirm that the total leaves roughly 20% of available upload capacity unused.
- Run a test with representative audio and the kinds of motion in the ambient video. Watch the encoder and YouTube stream-health messages for instability before committing to a long broadcast.

What changes when the stream runs 24/7?
Do not count on a complete YouTube archive
A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube’s warning is explicit: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Read Archive live streams.
For an all-day stream, enable local recording in your encoder if available and verify that the recording file is being written and growing. A local copy is a backup, not a guarantee that either the live broadcast or its archive will be uninterrupted.

DVR rewind may be limited
Archive availability and live DVR are separate issues. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to seek back through the whole broadcast. See YouTube’s live DVR guidance.
Reliability checks for a long broadcast
- Check that local archive files remain intact and continue growing.
- Test encoder failover before relying on it.
- Monitor audio and video quality throughout the broadcast.

Common bitrate and long-stream problems
- Connection drops or the stream becomes unstable: The selected bitrate may be too high for sustained upload capacity, or competing network traffic may be using the available headroom. Re-test under realistic conditions, account for concurrent traffic, and lower the output resolution or frame rate if necessary before choosing its corresponding recommended bitrate.
- The encoder is set to the wrong target: Confirm the codec, resolution, and frame rate sent to YouTube, then use that exact table row and column. Do not treat the H.264 recommendation as interchangeable with AV1/H.265.
- Viewers cannot rewind far back: This can be a YouTube DVR limitation on a stream longer than 12 hours, not a bitrate fault.
- The live broadcast has no complete replay: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Check your local recording rather than assuming the automatic archive contains the full day.
