Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For YouTube Live in OBS, select CBR and set the video bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for your ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. If you use OBS’s documented NVENC controls, the maximum-bitrate value applies to VBR and is ignored in CBR mode; it is not a second CBR ceiling. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain, leave headroom, and test the stream before an event.
What bitrate should you use for YouTube Live?
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. First choose the output resolution and frame rate you can encode reliably, then use the matching row and codec column in YouTube’s live ingest recommendations. These are recommended incoming live-stream rates, not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploaded videos. The table below reproduces the recommended rates in YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026; figures are Mbps.
| Output resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
YouTube’s table also gives minimums. For 1080p30, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264. For 1080p60, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for H.264. A minimum is not the recommended target: use the recommendation when your connection can sustain it. YouTube says it detects encoder settings by default and transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. YouTube’s live encoder settings
CBR target versus maximum bitrate
CBR target
CBR means constant bitrate. In OBS, the video bitrate field is the target rate to configure for your stream. Match it to the applicable YouTube recommendation, while accounting for what your connection can reliably upload. OBS’s overview also notes that bitrate depends on upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. OBS Studio Overview Guide

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Maximum bitrate in OBS NVENC
For OBS NVENC, the documented maxBitRate option is used for VBR and ignored for CBR. If you selected CBR, that maximum field is therefore not a second active cap on the CBR target. This behavior is documented for NVENC options introduced starting with OBS 31.0; it should not be assumed to describe every encoder’s controls or implementation. OBS Advanced NVENC Options
If you use a different encoder, check its own controls and documentation rather than assuming the NVENC behavior applies. The practical rule remains: configure the CBR video bitrate target, then make sure your total stream output fits the connection.

Choose a rate your upload can sustain
- Set the output first. Choose resolution and frame rate based on the stream you can encode and upload reliably. Streaming at 60 fps can use more system resources than 30 fps, according to OBS’s overview guide.
- Match the codec. Identify whether the outgoing stream uses H.264, AV1, or H.265, then select the corresponding YouTube table value.
- Check upload capacity. Use stable upload performance, not only the headline download speed from an internet plan. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload capacity unused; the stream’s total outgoing bitrate must stay within available upload bandwidth. YouTube streaming tips
- Include audio and other output. The table is for video bitrate. Keep the stream’s total outgoing bitrate within the connection’s usable capacity rather than treating the video number as the entire network load.
YouTube’s recommended upload headroom is approximately 20% (YouTube Help, page accessed in 2026; publication year not stated). Treat it as a margin for network variation, not a guarantee that a line with a particular advertised speed will sustain a stream.
Keyframes and preflight testing
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set the keyframe interval in OBS’s encoder or output controls according to the selected encoder, then confirm it in a test. YouTube’s encoder-setting entry reads: “Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” YouTube live encoder settings

Before the real broadcast, test with audio and video movement similar to what the event will contain. YouTube specifically advises that tests include audio and movement comparable to the planned stream. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and broadcast; an apparently stable static scene may not expose problems that appear during gameplay or other motion.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and disconnections
- OBS reports dropped frames. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Lower the video bitrate and test again, using stable upload speed and service limits as your guide. OBS’s troubleshooting page suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point in this context; it is troubleshooting guidance, not a universal guaranteed setting. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
- The stream disconnects intermittently. Check whether upload capacity varies or the configured output is too demanding. Reduce bitrate and/or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then run a representative test while monitoring stream health.
- The maximum field seems to conflict with CBR. If you are using OBS NVENC, the documented maximum field is ignored in CBR mode. Set the CBR bitrate target; do not rely on that field to limit it.
- The chosen rate is below YouTube’s recommendation. Confirm that you selected the correct codec and resolution/frame-rate row. If the recommendation is not sustainable on the connection, reduce the output settings or bitrate and test rather than accepting persistent drops.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded video live around the clock, OBS on a local computer is only one approach. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
