Low and Ultra-low latency reduce how far ahead YouTube buffers a live stream, leaving less room to absorb network fluctuations. That can make playback more prone to buffering. If viewer interaction is not essential, switch to Normal latency: YouTube says it offers the lowest viewer buffering and supports all resolutions and live features.
How latency mode affects buffering
Latency is the delay between a live event and what viewers see. A lower delay means a smaller read-ahead buffer in the player. When a viewer’s connection varies, that smaller cushion can run out sooner. YouTube cautions that lower latency may mean more playback buffering; it does not publish a percentage of viewers who will buffer in each mode.
| Mode | Best suited to | Typical latency stated by YouTube | Buffering and format notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams | No specific threshold stated | Lowest viewer buffering; all resolutions and live features supported. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls | Most viewers experience under 10 seconds | A balance between Normal and Ultra-low; 4K is unsupported. |
| Ultra-low | Highly interactive, real-time conversation | Most viewers experience under five seconds | Higher chance of viewer buffering; 4K is unsupported, and ingestion network problems can affect viewers more. |
These latency descriptions are YouTube’s current guidance, not a guarantee for every viewer. YouTube says a connection may still have live-streaming problems because of congestion or other conditions even when it can sustain the average bitrate.
Change the latency setting in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream settings and choose the latency mode that fits the event.
- Choose Normal if back-and-forth interaction is not important and reducing viewer buffering matters more than minimizing delay.
- Choose Low for limited interaction or Ultra-low when real-time conversation is central, understanding that the lower-delay modes have less tolerance for network variation.
- Test the setup before the event, then watch stream health and any error messages in the Live Control Room during the broadcast.
Webcam and mobile streams are always configured for interactivity, so you cannot manually select their latency. YouTube also says Low and Ultra-low latency are not available for 4K/2160p; those streams are optimized for quality at Normal latency.

Broadcaster checks: upload, bitrate and stream health
Leave upload headroom
Check that your outbound upload capacity can sustain the total streaming bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond that bitrate. Other people or devices using the same connection can reduce what is available to the stream, and an average speed result alone does not ensure a stable live feed.
Test the actual content and settings
Before going live, test with representative audio and motion rather than relying only on a static screen. Review the stream’s health and specific messages in Live Control Room. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers across devices and networks, but that does not remove the need for a stable incoming stream.

Check resolution against the interaction goal
If 4K is required, use Normal latency. If the priority is real-time interaction, select Low or Ultra-low and use a supported resolution instead of expecting low-latency 4K.

Find out whether the problem is isolated
Check whether buffering occurs on one live stream or across multiple videos and services. Follow YouTube’s standard device and app troubleshooting guidance, including using the YouTube app or a supported browser and checking playback settings.

Adjust Broadcast Delay on a TV
In the YouTube app on a TV, open Settings > Broadcast Delay. YouTube describes Default as best for minimizing playback interruptions. Decrease is intended to reduce live spoilers while retaining minimal interruptions.
Test Wi-Fi versus a wired connection
Where the device supports it, try a wired connection to see whether Wi-Fi instability is contributing. This is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix: it cannot change the creator’s latency mode or resolve encoder, platform-side, or other causes.
