If YouTube Live Control Room is not receiving OBS, first confirm your channel can livestream and that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the event you have open. Then start OBS, check Live Control Room’s stream-health message, and troubleshoot the branch it points to: eligibility, event/key mismatch, encoder settings, or network transport. Starting a stream in OBS sends the feed; it does not by itself start the YouTube event.
Check channel eligibility before changing OBS settings
If you cannot create or start a livestream, check whether the channel is verified and whether it has any live-streaming restrictions. YouTube’s stated eligibility guidance includes having no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If the channel is not eligible, changing bitrate or reinstalling OBS will not remove that platform restriction.
Match OBS to the stream open in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then select the Stream tab for the stream you intend to run.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Confirm that the selected event in Live Control Room is the same one configured in OBS; a key may be reused in YouTube, so an old OBS setup can point at a different event than the one you are watching.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not include it in screenshots, recordings, or public troubleshooting logs. If OBS reports an error when you try to start, YouTube recommends generating a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room before selecting Go live there. These are separate actions in YouTube’s encoder workflow.
If the preview still does not appear, note the exact health message and its timestamp. Use that message to choose the next check rather than assuming every “no data” symptom means the key is wrong.
Read the stream-health message before changing settings
Live Control Room reports the health of the incoming stream and can show specific errors. YouTube’s error guidance distinguishes critical red errors, which can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, from yellow warnings that may reduce quality. The error list includes issues such as incorrect stream format and keyframe frequency. Follow the message shown for your feed; the same blank preview can have different causes.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check OBS output and encoder settings
Confirm OBS is producing a valid feed
- Update OBS to a current version, then check that the picture and sound look correct in OBS’s local output.
- Watch for encoder errors or unusually high CPU load. A local preview that looks right is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the feed is reaching YouTube.
- Compare the stream format and settings with the protocol and stream configuration you are actually using. Do not enable HDR, HLS, or other special options unless your setup calls for them.
Use YouTube’s settings as guidance, not a universal preset
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; a value that fits one format is not a universal setting or a guarantee that your connection can sustain it.
| YouTube-listed H.264 format | Recommended bitrate | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | A YouTube recommendation for this specific resolution, frame rate, and codec. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | A separate recommendation; do not substitute it for the 60 fps entry. |
These figures are YouTube recommendations, not upload-speed prescriptions. If your outbound connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, the encoder may drop frames or disconnect even when the local picture appears normal.

Separate network transport problems from encoder problems
OBS describes dropped frames as evidence that the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Repeated drops can lead to disconnection. If OBS’s local output is healthy but Live Control Room receives nothing or shows interruptions, test the outbound connection and look for network-path causes.
- Weak or variable upload connection: test outbound connection strength. If the problem persists after local checks, YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider; the provider may be able to investigate congestion or routing issues.
- VPN or security software: check whether a VPN, firewall, or antivirus product is blocking or disrupting the encoder’s connection. Isolate these only where you can do so safely and restore protection afterward.
- Router or other network hardware: inspect the router, cable, network adapter, or related equipment when symptoms point to a local connection fault. Replacing hardware without evidence is not a first-line fix.
- Windows network options: OBS documents network optimization and TCP pacing controls for Windows. Treat these as diagnostic options, not guaranteed repairs; they will not correct an invalid key or channel restriction.
Quick diagnostic map
| Likely branch | Evidence to look for | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Channel eligibility | Channel is not verified or has a live-streaming restriction. | Resolve the eligibility issue before changing encoder settings. |
| Event or key mismatch | OBS is sending to another event, or reports an error when starting. | Copy the URL and key from the intended stream; if the start error persists, refresh the key and update OBS. |
| Encoder configuration | Local output or encoder errors, CPU pressure, or a Control Room format/keyframe error. | Update OBS, inspect its output, and align format and settings with YouTube’s guidance and the message shown. |
| Network transport | Dropped frames, disconnections, weak upload, or signs of VPN, firewall, or router interference. | Test outbound connectivity and isolate plausible network or security causes; contact the ISP if the issue remains. |
Common symptoms and fixes
OBS says it is streaming, but Control Room has no preview
Check that OBS has the server URL and key for the stream currently open in Live Control Room. Confirm OBS is actually sending, then wait for the preview. If there is still no feed, use the health message and timestamp to distinguish a format or ingestion issue from a connection failure.

OBS cannot start the stream
Recheck the server URL and key against the intended event. If OBS continues to report a start error, generate a fresh key in Live Control Room and replace the one in OBS.
The preview appears, but the event is not live
Once the preview arrives, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the encoder feed; it is not the same action as starting the YouTube event.

The feed starts, then drops frames or disconnects
Investigate the outbound connection and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate. Check for VPN, firewall, antivirus, router, or other network-path interference. If local checks do not resolve a weak or unstable connection, contact the ISP.
