OBS showing “Streaming” does not prove YouTube is receiving video for the event you intended. First check the selected event and its preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If there is no preview, troubleshoot the stream URL, key, protocol, encoder connection, and network. If a preview is present but the event is still offline, follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and click Go live when prompted.
Start by finding which stage is failing
There are two separate states to check: OBS can be sending an encoder output, while YouTube may not be receiving it for the selected event; and YouTube may receive a preview without the event having been started for viewers. Use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages to identify which situation you have. YouTube says you can check stream health and analytics there while streaming: See your live stream’s metrics — Computer.
- No preview: treat this first as an ingest or connection problem. Check the event, stream URL, protocol, key, and OBS/network status.
- Preview appears, but the event is offline: check YouTube’s setup workflow and click Go live if it prompts you. A preview and a publicly live event are not the same state.
- OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects: focus on the connection to YouTube and whether your upload can sustain the configured bitrate.
- Preview and OBS output look healthy: confirm you selected the correct event and that its publishing workflow has been completed.
Fix the connection when YouTube has no preview
1. Confirm the intended event in Live Control Room
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the stream you mean to broadcast. Do not assume OBS is feeding the event currently selected in the browser: reused stream settings may leave OBS configured with a key from a previous stream. YouTube’s encoder setup workflow says to copy the stream URL and key from the intended stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
2. Match OBS to YouTube’s URL, protocol, and current key
Compare the destination configured in OBS with the stream URL and key shown for that event in Live Control Room. Check that you have not pasted a stale key, used a different event’s details, or selected the wrong server address. If you intend to use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL from YouTube’s stream settings using the lock icon; an incorrect URL or an encoder that does not support RTMPS can result in a connection timeout. See YouTube’s instructions for encrypting your stream using RTMPS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If encoder startup still fails, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends generating a new stream key and updating the encoder with it. Avoid changing unrelated settings before you have checked the error shown in Live Control Room: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
3. Read YouTube’s stream-health message
Live Control Room reports stream health and may show a specific error. Use that message to choose the next change rather than guessing. For example, a format error calls for checking the encoder format, while no incoming preview calls for checking the destination and connection. YouTube’s live streaming error messages explain the health indicators and format errors.

4. Check OBS’s connection indicators and your upload
OBS Project defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. The symptom does not, by itself, prove that OBS’s encoder is defective. Its connection guide, published September 30, 2024, recommends investigating bitrate, Wi-Fi, VPN or security software, network-optimization software, drivers, router, modem, and cables as relevant: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Use Ethernet to test whether Wi-Fi is contributing to instability. If a cable is suspected, try a known-good cable; wired networking is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check that OBS’s Bind to IP setting is Default, as OBS recommends.
- Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, or network-optimization tools that could interfere with the connection. Change one factor at a time where possible.
- Lower the video bitrate if your stable upload cannot sustain it. OBS presents 75% of total upload speed as a starting-point troubleshooting heuristic, not a YouTube requirement or guarantee.
- YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Its encoder guidance gives bitrate ranges that vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so consult the current table for your actual output rather than applying a generic bitrate: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option may reduce dropped frames during congestion, but it can reduce video quality and does not repair an unstable underlying connection. If the connection itself appears faulty, test the network and contact your ISP as appropriate. YouTube also recommends checking that total stream bitrate fits outbound upload bandwidth: Streaming tips.

When the preview works but YouTube still says offline
Once a preview appears, the encoder has delivered a feed to YouTube, but the event may still need to be started. Follow YouTube’s documented sequence: start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live when the workflow presents that control. Afterward, check the channel or watch page to confirm the event is live. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this preview-then-start flow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Check encoder settings only when the error points there
Compare OBS’s output with YouTube’s current requirements and the precise health error. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR rate control, and H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s incorrect-format error guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Requirements and bitrate ranges can vary with the output chosen, so use the live encoder table and error message rather than changing settings at random: YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance and live streaming error messages.

Quick symptom-to-check guide
| What you see | Most relevant checks |
|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Correct event, matching stream URL and key, RTMP/RTMPS selection, OBS connection, and network stability. |
| Preview present; event remains offline | Complete YouTube’s event-start workflow and click Go live when prompted. |
| OBS dropped frames or disconnects | Upload stability, bitrate, Wi-Fi, VPN/security interference, Bind to IP, drivers, and network hardware. |
| YouTube shows a specific health or format error | Apply the correction for that named error; check codec, rate control, keyframe interval, and bitrate only as relevant. |
| Only one viewer says they cannot watch | Distinguish a viewer playback or network issue from an absent feed in Live Control Room; a viewer report alone does not establish an encoder failure. |
