If OBS is dropping frames while streaming to YouTube, first lower the stream’s total bitrate to fit the upload bandwidth your connection can sustain—not its advertised download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. Then check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages during a representative test. There is no single bitrate that works for every Indian ISP, location, or household.
What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not
OBS’s dropped-frames counter points to a problem sending data from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server, commonly because the connection is unstable or the configured bitrate is too high for it. This is different from an overloaded encoder: dropped frames alone are not evidence that your CPU or GPU cannot encode the video. Start by diagnosing the network path and bitrate. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains this distinction.
Download speed is not a reliable substitute for upload capacity. Upload bandwidth may be lower, and other people or devices using the same connection can leave less available for your stream. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth, shared connections, and speed testing.
Measure upload capacity before choosing OBS settings
- Test the connection you will actually stream on. Run an upload speed test at the time of day and on the network you plan to use. Repeat it if results vary; a single favorable reading does not establish sustained capacity.
- Account for competing traffic. Consider other users, downloads, cloud backups, and devices sharing the connection. The upload capacity available to OBS can be lower than the speed-test result.
- Leave room for variation. Apply YouTube’s recommendation to reserve 20% of available upload bandwidth. Treat the remaining capacity as a ceiling for the total stream bitrate, not a target to fill completely.
- Choose a lower video target if needed. Reduce resolution or frame rate and then set a bitrate that stays comfortably within the usable upload capacity, including audio and any other stream traffic.
Use the result as a starting point, not a guarantee: speed tests cannot prove that the connection will remain stable through a full broadcast. Test the actual scene, motion, and audio you intend to stream, while monitoring both OBS and YouTube.

Match resolution and frame rate to the connection
YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate ranges are platform guidance, not measurements of what an individual Indian connection can sustain. The available ranges overlap, so the right setting depends on measured stability as well as image detail and motion.
| Video target | YouTube H.264 bitrate range | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4–4 Mbps | A lower-resolution starting point when upload capacity is constrained; choose a bitrate within the range that leaves the recommended headroom. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps | Consider it if measured upload capacity can sustain the total bitrate with headroom during a representative test. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps | Use only if the connection can sustain the total bitrate reliably; 60 fps does not make a weak or unstable upload link more capable. |
The figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. They do not establish a recommended setting for India as a whole, or for a particular ISP, neighborhood, mobile connection, or household. A lower-quality stream that stays connected may serve viewers better than a higher target that repeatedly drops frames.

Set OBS and YouTube’s encoder requirements correctly
Lowering bitrate or resolution does not excuse an incorrect encoder format or keyframe interval. When diagnosing connection trouble, keep the ingest settings within YouTube’s guidance:
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Format baseline: H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative compatibility choice when investigating an ingestion-format warning.
Where these controls appear in OBS can vary by version and selected encoder. Check the streaming output settings for rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval, and the video settings for resolution and frame rate. Use the relevant controls for the encoder you selected rather than assuming every OBS installation exposes identical labels. Compare the configured output with YouTube’s current encoder settings.

Run a test and read both health indicators
- Start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate for your channel, using the same network and OBS scene planned for the real broadcast.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter. If it rises, the network path or configured bitrate remains a likely issue; reduce bitrate or investigate connection stability.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages for incoming-feed problems such as bitrate, format, resolution, or keyframe-frequency errors.
- Change one setting at a time, then test again with representative movement and audio. Viewer playback alone may not reveal a configuration warning.
YouTube’s live streaming error-message guide describes the health warnings shown in Live Control Room.
Fix common causes of dropped frames
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames increase during the stream | Configured total bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, or the connection is unstable. | Repeat an upload test under realistic conditions, reserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower bitrate or video target. Retest. |
| Performance is worse on Wi-Fi | The local wireless link may be unstable or congested. | Test with Ethernet if possible. A cable can improve the local connection’s stability, but cannot add ISP upload capacity or fix congestion farther upstream. |
| Dropping eases when other household use stops | Shared devices or traffic are consuming available upload bandwidth. | Reduce competing traffic during the broadcast or lower the stream’s total bitrate to leave more room. |
| YouTube reports an encoder or stream-health error | Bitrate, format, resolution, or keyframe frequency may not meet the ingest requirements. | Read the specific Live Control Room message and compare the corresponding OBS output setting with YouTube’s guidance. |
| Connection drops are intermittent despite a lower bitrate | The upstream service or network path may vary; a lower configured bitrate cannot guarantee a stable route. | Test at the intended time, try Ethernet if currently on Wi-Fi, and continue monitoring the counter and stream-health messages. Contact your ISP if the connection itself remains unstable. |
Dynamic bitrate: useful fallback, not a connection fix
OBS can adjust bitrate downward when the connection cannot keep up. This may reduce interruptions, but it trades away image quality and does not repair the underlying network problem. First choose a bitrate that fits tested upload capacity; consider dynamic bitrate as a fallback if conditions still fluctuate. OBS documents the trade-off and limits.
