If only one viewer hears it, check YouTube’s player, browser and device audio. If multiple viewers hear it—or the published VOD contains the gap—inspect the VOD and local recording, then check the encoder’s audio sources and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s published guidance covers general playback and live-ingest problems; it does not establish a specific defect or setting for silence between successive VODs.
Start by locating where the silence occurs
Replay the same timestamp and, if possible, ask another viewer to check it. Compare the published VOD with the creator’s local recording or archive. This separates a playback issue affecting one device from a problem that may be in the source, encoder, stream ingest or recording. It is a practical diagnostic approach, not a YouTube rule.
- One viewer or device only: Begin with player, browser and device sound settings.
- Several viewers, or silence in the VOD: Inspect the recording and creator-side audio path.
- Unclear or inconsistent results: Replay the exact timestamp on another device and compare it with the local archive before changing settings.
If only one viewer hears silence
YouTube recommends checking that browser or device sound is enabled, reviewing device sound settings, and restarting the browser or device. ( YouTube Help: How to fix no sound on YouTube.)
- Check that the YouTube player is not muted and raise its volume.
- Check the browser tab and browser sound settings, then the operating system’s volume and selected audio output device.
- Replay the same VOD timestamp in another browser or on another supported device. If available, ask another viewer to check it too.
- Restart the browser or device, then replay the timestamp.
If the gap follows only one browser or device while others hear audio normally, keep investigating that playback setup rather than changing the stream encoder.

If multiple viewers hear the gap or the VOD contains it
Compare the VOD with the local archive
Inspect the affected timestamp in the published VOD and the creator’s local recording, if one exists. If both contain the silence, the break may be in the source or creator-side signal chain. If the local file is normal but the VOD is silent, investigate the encoder output, ingest status and connection. Neither comparison alone proves the cause.
Check sources and audio routing in the encoder
Confirm that the audio sources intended to play across the transition—such as game audio, desktop audio or microphone—are enabled, routed to the stream, and showing activity in the encoder’s audio meters. Check the encoder preview and review its errors and CPU load. YouTube recommends checking routed audio/video sources, encoder errors and CPU load when troubleshooting a live stream; if encoder output appears healthy, it advises checking the outbound internet connection. Review YouTube Live Control Room and ingest errors
Look for audio-related errors in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance identifies a missing audio stream and multiple audio streams as possible ingest problems. For RTMP/RTMPS, its guidance names AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. If YouTube reports “Your encoder is sending no audio,” verify that the encoder is actually sending the intended audio stream; do not assume that changing a codec will fix a gap without checking the encoder and recording. Test the VOD handoff before the next rerun
Run a private or unlisted test with the same game audio, microphone or desktop routing, and the same transition between the two VODs. Check the transition in both the Live Control Room preview and the local archive, and monitor audio and video during the test. YouTube recommends representative testing and continuous monitoring; applying those recommendations specifically to a VOD handoff is a practical precaution, not confirmation of a platform defect.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio for RTMP/RTMPS stereo settings. That is a general configuration recommendation, not evidence that audio bitrate causes this particular symptom. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
What not to assume
A silent interval at a VOD boundary could originate in the source material, encoder routing, ingest or playback. The available YouTube guidance addresses general playback and live-stream troubleshooting; it does not document a specific “between VODs” rerun defect or identify a dedicated setting for it. Diagnose the affected stream and setup before attributing the gap to YouTube or buying streaming accessories: the cited guidance does not establish a headset, microphone, cable or capture device as a fix.
