If your YouTube live stream stops after your Windows PC has been idle, first check whether the computer went to sleep, whether closing a laptop lid triggered sleep, and whether the sleep timer changes between battery and plugged-in use. A screen turning off does not necessarily mean the PC slept. If Windows stayed awake, move on to YouTube playback quality and network checks; sleep is a possible cause, not a diagnosis for every interruption.
1. Check whether Windows slept or only turned off the screen
Note what happened just before the stream stopped. Did Windows show a resume or sign-in screen when you returned, or had only the display gone dark? A sleeping PC may interrupt normal network activity. On supported Modern Standby devices, Windows may quiesce network activity during sleep and restore connectivity on resume. The display and sleep timers are separate controls, so a dark screen alone does not prove the computer slept.
- Sleep or resume occurred: check the sleep timeout and, if applicable, the laptop lid-close action.
- Only the screen turned off: continue checking the power source, network, and YouTube playback; display-off by itself is not the same as sleep.
2. Adjust the Windows sleep timeout
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Review Make my device sleep after for both plugged-in and battery use, where those options are available. For a controlled test, set sleep later than the usual time the interruption occurs.
- Keep the display setting separate: Turn my screen off after controls the screen, while Make my device sleep after controls sleep. You can leave the screen timeout shorter while testing whether sleep is the cause.
To compare power modes, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Test a less restrictive option such as Best performance against Best power efficiency or Balanced, if your device offers them. Microsoft describes Best power efficiency as limiting background activity to reduce power use and Best performance as maximizing performance. Power mode availability depends on device configuration; changing it is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed YouTube fix.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Check the sleep timeout under both On battery and When plugged in. Test the setting that matches the power state in which the stream fails.
- If your PC exposes When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network, note its setting during diagnosis. Whether this control exists depends on the PC’s hardware and manufacturer.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system still works, but Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

3. Check the laptop lid and power source
If you are using a laptop, test with the lid open. Many laptops can be configured to sleep when the lid closes. To review the behavior, open Additional power settings > Choose what closing the lid does where available, and check the action for the power state you are using. If the stream fails only after the lid closes, that setting is a more direct lead than changing unrelated network options.
Compare plugged-in and battery operation as separate conditions. If the problem happens only on battery, inspect the battery-specific sleep timeout and any available network-while-asleep setting; if it happens only while plugged in, inspect that sleep timeout instead. Power-saving behavior is a clue to test, not proof that the network itself is faulty.

4. If the PC stayed awake, troubleshoot YouTube and the connection
YouTube’s computer playback guidance recommends checking the connection, trying another playback quality in the player, and testing on another device. Network congestion and other factors can interrupt live programming or delay a stream even when the connection seems good.
- Try another playback quality in the YouTube player and observe whether the interruption changes.
- Compare with another YouTube live stream or test the same stream on another device.
- Check whether other websites or apps also lose connection. If they do, investigate the broader connection; if only one stream is affected, compare the stream, quality, and device before attributing the problem to Windows power settings.
Microsoft’s Modern Standby documentation explains that Windows may quiesce network activity during sleep and restore connectivity on resume. YouTube’s playback guidance separately notes that network congestion and other factors may cause live-programming issues. Those are different paths to an interruption, so establish whether the PC slept before changing adapter settings or blaming the connection.

5. Narrow the cause with a controlled comparison
- Sleep versus display off: Check whether Windows resumed or requested sign-in, rather than assuming a dark display means sleep.
- Power source: Compare battery and plugged-in operation.
- Lid state: Check whether the failure follows closing the laptop lid.
- Scope: See whether other apps and sites lose network access or only YouTube does.
- Playback context: Compare another quality, stream, or device.
Change one condition at a time and note whether the interruption follows it. Windows labels and available settings vary by version, manufacturer, and hardware. Modern Standby behavior applies only to devices that support that model.
6. Settings and symptoms that do not justify a universal fix
Do not disable network-adapter power management as a blanket remedy. Adapter options depend on hardware and drivers. Microsoft documents features such as device sleep on disconnect and selective suspend, but their existence does not establish that changing them fixes YouTube playback. Investigate an adapter-specific control only if the symptoms point to that device and the option is actually present.
