If a YouTube Live loop looks stretched, cropped, or surrounded by bars, check the video file, encoder canvas and output, then the Live Control Room preview—in that order. For a conventional horizontal stream, use a 16:9 source and 16:9 output with matching dimensions, such as 1920×1080, and square pixels. For a deliberately vertical broadcast, compose and preview it as 9:16 instead. YouTube’s player adapts to the source’s aspect ratio, so a non-16:9 video is not automatically a platform error.
First identify where the mismatch appears
Compare the actual loop file with the encoder’s canvas and output, then inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. This separates three common causes: the video itself has the wrong framing, the encoder is fitting it incorrectly, or the player is displaying a valid non-16:9 source in a layout you did not expect.
- Stretched image: the source or scene may be scaled unevenly to fill a different-shaped frame.
- Cropped image: the source may be wider or taller than the canvas, or the scene may be using a fill/crop fit.
- Bars beside or above the picture: the source and display frame have different shapes. Bars are not necessarily evidence that YouTube has distorted the video.
YouTube says, “The standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer is 16:9.” Its player adapts to other source ratios; the displayed shape can therefore vary with the source and viewing context. YouTube Help: Video resolution & aspect ratios
Fix a horizontal 16:9 loop
- Inspect the source file. Check its pixel dimensions and framing. A standard horizontal example is 1920×1080; 1280×720 is another 16:9 example. If the picture is already cropped or has bars baked into it, fix the source or how it is placed in the scene rather than stretching it.
- Set the encoder canvas and output to the intended frame. For a conventional horizontal presentation, use a 16:9 canvas and output resolution that match the source or the composition you want, such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. Changing only the output resolution will not correct a source that is framed incorrectly.
- Check pixel aspect ratio. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies square pixels. Confirm the encoder is not interpreting the video with a non-square pixel shape.
- Fit the loop deliberately. Place the source within the canvas without unequal horizontal and vertical scaling. If preserving the full image leaves unused space, decide whether that composition is acceptable or revise the source framing; do not stretch it simply to fill every pixel.

Choose horizontal or vertical framing intentionally
Use horizontal 16:9 for a conventional computer or TV presentation. YouTube also supports vertical 9:16 Live for the vertical viewing experience and Shorts feed. A vertical broadcast should be composed as its own layout, not treated as a horizontal stream with an accidental crop.
YouTube documents vertical layout options including center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Review the vertical preview and check that important subjects, text, and game action remain visible in the selected composition. Do not bake bars in as a general fix
Avoid adding black bars or blank padding directly to the video as a cosmetic patch. YouTube warns that baked-in padding can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. Correct the source framing or encoder canvas instead. YouTube Help: Video resolution & aspect ratios
