A rising count points to an unstable connection or bitrate problem; a clean counter with a hitch at the switch points instead to local media-source or scene behavior. Test the switch in an OBS recording before changing your live settings.
First identify where the hitch happens
A visible pause, a rising OBS dropped-frame count, and a viewer’s buffering are different symptoms. In OBS, open View > Docks > Stats and watch the network dropped-frame count while reproducing one controlled switch. Record locally at the same time if possible.
- Network dropped frames rise at the switch: investigate upload stability, bitrate, network route, and ingest settings.
- The count stays steady, but the local recording has a gap exactly at the switch: inspect source activation, file reload behavior, and playlist transitions.
- The recording is clean, but some viewers report buffering: compare viewer playback conditions and YouTube stream health before changing OBS sources.
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns network dropped frames; it does not rule out a visible media-source reload gap. Fix a hitch tied to the video or scene switch
Check whether OBS closes the file while the source is hidden
Select the Media Source in the scene, open its Properties, and inspect Close file when inactive. When enabled, OBS unloads the file while the source is inactive. OBS notes that when the source becomes visible again, there may be a short period with no display while the file reloads. If the source is hidden and shown at every transition, test with this option disabled or keep the source active where practical. Check resource use on the actual streaming machine, since keeping media active can use more resources.

Make a local recording and trigger the same scene or source switch several times. If the gap disappears locally, then test the changed setup in a private or otherwise controlled stream before relying on it for a broadcast. OBS documents the reload behavior in its Media Sources guide.
For multiple files, test a VLC Video Source playlist
OBS’s VLC Video Source supports playlists and a Loop Playlist option. Check that the expected files are present, the loop option is set as intended, and Visibility Behaviour matches how the source is used in your scenes. Test the complete playlist in a local recording. OBS documents playlist looping and visibility options, but does not promise gapless playback between clips; a VLC playlist is a practical arrangement to test, not a guaranteed cure for every transition hitch. Fix rising network dropped frames
If the Stats count increases during the switch—or at other times in the stream—treat the problem as a network path or bitrate issue rather than assuming the file transition is at fault.
- Reduce bitrate if upload capacity is unstable. Choose a setting your connection can sustain consistently, not just a peak speed from a brief test. Lower bitrate can reduce network drops, but also reduces image quality.
- Try another YouTube ingest server, if available. A different route may behave better; compare results with the same stream settings.
- Check network software. Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, and bundled network “optimization” utilities as possible causes, changing one factor at a time.
- Prefer wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi. This is useful only if wireless instability is contributing to the network drops. An Ethernet cable will not fix a local source reload gap or an overloaded encoder.
- Use Dynamic Bitrate only as a fallback. OBS can lower bitrate during congestion to avoid dropping frames, but that does not repair the underlying connection and can reduce picture quality.
- Isolate suspected hardware faults carefully. OBS recommends replacing components one at a time to confirm a fault. If you are unsure whether the issue is local equipment or the provider’s connection, consult your ISP before buying replacement network hardware.

Check YouTube ingest settings and stream health
YouTube recommends choosing a quality your internet connection can reliably sustain, checking connection speed, and running a preflight with representative motion and audio. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event; these can surface configuration issues such as low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, with CBR and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as recommended in its current guidance. These are platform settings recommendations, not evidence that a source transition caused a local hitch. Do not raise bitrate blindly: it must fit stable upload capacity.

If only viewers see buffering
When the local recording is clean and OBS reports no network drops, check YouTube stream health and ask whether the issue affects all viewers or only particular devices or connections. OBS notes that viewers use different devices, locations, and internet connections, so buffering can happen without the streamer dropping frames. A viewer-only playback problem does not by itself establish that a source switch or OBS is at fault. OBS: dropped frames and network issues; YouTube Live stream health documentation.
When the cause is still unclear
The symptom alone does not identify the source type, OBS version, encoder, bitrate, machine load, or network conditions. Reproduce one switch in a local recording, note whether the OBS network counter changes, and save an OBS log from the affected session. Those observations separate a local transition gap from network drops and viewer-side buffering before you make larger changes.
