If YouTube Live says your keyframes are too far apart, set your encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds. In OBS, look for the keyframe interval in the output settings when using Advanced Output, or use the option to enforce streaming-service encoder settings if it is available in your current configuration. At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames.
What the warning means
YouTube’s warning—“Your encoder is sending keyframes too often or not often enough”—is about the timing of keyframes in the video encoder output, not a camera or capture-card fault. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its error guidance specifically says to set keyframes every 2 seconds; intervals that are too long can contribute to buffering. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube live-streaming errors
The same guidance applies to Indian creators: the cited YouTube recommendations do not specify a separate India-only keyframe requirement. This warning alone does not establish that your internet connection is the cause.
Set a two-second interval in OBS
- Open OBS output settings. In OBS, open Settings and select Output. If the output mode is Advanced, find the streaming encoder’s Keyframe Interval setting and set it to 2 seconds. OBS labels can vary by version and output configuration, so confirm that you are changing the streaming encoder rather than a recording-only setting.
- Alternatively, use service settings enforcement. If your current OBS output configuration offers an option to enforce streaming-service encoder settings, enable it and check whether OBS sets the interval automatically. This setting location is a practical pointer from an older OBS Project forum answer, not a guarantee that every current OBS version exposes the same label or behavior. OBS Project forum discussion
- Match the interval to frame rate. Keep the interval at two seconds when you change frame rate. At 30 fps, that means a keyframe every 60 frames. In general, the frame count for a two-second interval is twice the frame rate per second.
- Test before the broadcast. Start a test stream with representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing with content like the planned broadcast and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube encoder settings
If the warning remains
- Check which output settings are active. Confirm OBS is using the output mode and streaming encoder you edited; a correct value in another output path may not change the live stream.
- Re-read the Live Control Room message. Use the specific warning and current stream-health information to guide the next check rather than assuming an OBS field proves what YouTube received.
- Consider ingestion errors. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, so the delivered stream may not reflect the setting you expect.
