If YouTube Live shows “No data” or “Waiting for Data” after you start an automated playlist, YouTube is not reporting stream-health information for the feed it expects. That does not, by itself, prove the playlist has stopped. Check in order: whether playback is advancing, whether the encoder has usable audio and video, whether it is sending to the correct stream and key in the intended Live Control Room, and whether the outbound connection reaches YouTube.
What “No data” means—and what it does not
YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats stream receipt and stream health as separate fields. A stream state of inactive means YouTube is not receiving data via that stream; a health status of noData means YouTube has no information about the stream’s health. These statuses do not identify why the feed is missing, and neither one proves that a particular playlist player failed. See YouTube’s stream resource documentation.
“Waiting for Data,” “Starting Soon,” and an encoder’s own “live” or “connected” indicator describe different parts of the process; do not assume they are interchangeable. An encoder can be running locally without YouTube receiving the feed at the endpoint and stream configuration you intended. Check the status in the Live Control Room for the scheduled broadcast you want to use, as well as the encoder itself. StreamNeo’s guide to YouTube waiting-for-data states also explains this connection-versus-broadcast distinction.
Troubleshoot in this order
Change one thing at a time. Before editing settings, note the selected broadcast, ingest URL, stream key, and encoder status. This makes it easier to identify the cause instead of losing track of which change mattered.

Make sure the automated playlist is still playing
Check the playlist or automation tool directly. Confirm that it has an active source, playback is advancing, and the queue has not ended or paused. Look at the player’s preview or other local output rather than relying only on a “running” label. If playback is stopped, resolve that there before changing YouTube settings.
-
Inspect the encoder’s actual output
Check the encoder preview or make a local recording, if available. Confirm that both picture and sound are present and that the source is not frozen, blank, or muted. Check the encoder’s error messages and CPU load; heavy load or encoding errors can affect the output. YouTube Help recommends using the latest encoder software: “Make sure that you’re using the latest version of your encoder software.” See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

-
Confirm the intended stream and broadcast in Live Control Room
Open the Live Control Room for the scheduled stream you mean to run. Verify that the encoder is configured with the server or ingest URL and stream key for that stream—not a different scheduled broadcast or an old configuration. Avoid sharing the stream key; treat it like a password. If you replace or reset it, update the encoder with the new key and verify that it is sending to the intended stream.
-
Check the outbound internet connection
If the local encoder output has working audio and video, check that the connection from the encoder to the internet is stable and has enough capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends testing outbound internet strength and contacting your internet service provider if the connection has problems. A working local preview alone does not prove that data is reaching YouTube. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.

Verify RTMPS settings if you use RTMPS
Use the RTMPS endpoint provided by the stream configuration; do not guess or substitute a server URL. Confirm the protocol and settings in the encoder, including a connection to port 443. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes that a wrong server name, port, or SSL setup can prevent a connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Read YouTube’s stream state and health details
Where available, inspect the stream’s state and health details, including any configuration issues shown in Live Control Room. The API distinguishes stream states such as
active, inactive, andreadyfrom health statuses such asgood,ok,bad, andnoData. Use the specific issue shown to guide the next change rather than altering bitrate or codecs without evidence. See the API reference for stream status and health.Rank #4

Match the symptom to the next check
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The playlist preview is stopped or not advancing | Check the automation queue, active source, and playback state first. |
| The playlist plays, but the encoder preview or local recording has no usable picture or sound | Check the encoder’s selected source, audio/video output, errors, and CPU load. |
| The encoder looks healthy, but YouTube shows no incoming data | Confirm the Live Control Room broadcast, ingest URL, and stream key match the encoder configuration. |
| The stream and key appear correct, but YouTube still receives nothing | Check outbound internet strength; if using RTMPS, verify the configured endpoint, protocol, port 443, and SSL setup. |
| YouTube shows a configuration issue | Use the issue reported in the stream’s health details to choose the next change; avoid unrelated setting changes. |
If the stream still does not arrive
After checking playback, encoder output, stream selection, and connection settings, avoid repeatedly changing several settings at once. Keep a record of the exact broadcast selected, the endpoint in use, the encoder’s status or error, and the YouTube status shown at the time. Those details help you narrow down which layer is failing or explain the problem when seeking help. There is no single universal reset procedure established for every encoder and playlist platform.
If you are reconsidering the automation tool rather than diagnosing a one-time connection issue, YouTube’s encoder software options include software described for continuous prerecorded-video streams. That category may fit a playlist workflow, but using it is not a guaranteed fix for a no-data state; check the tool’s protocol support, output visibility, and reliability controls for your setup.
