For a 1080p prerecorded video at 29.97 fps, use YouTube’s published 1080p at 30 fps settings as the closest documented target: set a constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a video bitrate of 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. YouTube does not publish a separate 29.97 fps row, so confirm the encoder’s actual output and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
Recommended 1080p settings for 29.97 fps footage
YouTube’s encoder table labels its relevant row “1080p @30fps.” It does not separately specify fractional frame rates such as 29.97 fps, nor does it explain whether an encoder should preserve, convert, or otherwise handle that frame rate. The settings below apply YouTube’s 30 fps guidance as the closest documented category; they do not mean 29.97 and 30 fps are identical.
| Setting | YouTube guidance for 1080p at 30 fps |
|---|---|
| Video bitrate, H.264 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| Video bitrate, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Video format | Progressive scan, square pixels |
| Advanced video | 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo at 44.1 kHz, with 128 kbps recommended |
| 5.1 surround audio | AAC at 48 kHz, with 384 kbps recommended |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit |
These are YouTube’s published input or ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality for every file, encoder, or connection. Choose a codec and corresponding bitrate supported by your encoder. YouTube’s current settings reference is YouTube’s encoder settings help page.
Set upload headroom
Your available upload bandwidth needs to exceed the stream’s total bitrate, including audio. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom. A connection that only just matches the configured bitrate leaves no such margin. See YouTube’s encoder recommendations and streaming tips before choosing a target.

Set up YouTube Live and connect an encoder
YouTube provides the Live Control Room, stream URL, and stream key. The exact steps for selecting and looping a prerecorded file depend on your encoder; YouTube’s reviewed help pages do not define one universal file-playback workflow.
- Open YouTube Studio and prepare the live event. Go to Live Control Room and schedule a stream or create one. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page that viewers can share and use to set reminders. Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming setup guidance.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that let an encoder send its feed. Treat it as a credential: do not publish or share it. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder.
- Configure the prerecorded source and output. Set the encoder’s canvas or output resolution to 1920 × 1080 and choose settings consistent with the closest documented 30 fps category. Check whether it actually outputs 29.97 fps, converts the frame rate, or uses another output rate. Set the codec-specific bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval from the table. Consult that encoder’s own documentation for adding, playing, and looping a media file.
- Send the feed early and inspect the preview. Start the encoder with enough time to let the Live Control Room receive its feed. Check the image, framing, movement, audio, and synchronization in the preview. Use Go live when the preview is ready and the scheduled event is due. YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips recommend testing before the event.
- Monitor the stream while it runs. Watch the Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages, and verify that upload bandwidth remains sufficient. Test the same file, motion, and audio that viewers will receive.
Preflight checks for prerecorded video
Run a test before the event using movement and audio representative of the actual content. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise setting up the encoder in advance, checking the preview, verifying the channel and watch-page playback on mobile, checking the local archive, and testing backup-encoder failover where relevant.

- Confirm the encoder’s output resolution and actual frame rate rather than relying only on the source file’s label.
- Match the bitrate to the selected codec’s YouTube row and use CBR with the recommended keyframe interval.
- Play through the parts with the most motion, and check for judder or other visible problems in the preview.
- Listen for missing audio, clipping, and audio/video sync issues before starting the event.
- Check the stream URL and key if the encoder cannot connect; reset a compromised key in Live Control Room.
- Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and watch stream-health messages during transmission.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The picture is not 1080p or the frame rate is unexpected | Check the encoder’s actual output resolution and frame rate; YouTube may detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default. | Correct the encoder output. If you need to select resolution manually in YouTube, YouTube directs creators to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Stream Resolution. |
| The image stutters, drops frames, or looks poor | Compare the selected codec and bitrate with YouTube’s 1080p30 row; check CBR, keyframe interval, and available upload bandwidth. | Use the matching codec recommendation, keep the keyframe interval at 2 seconds (and no more than 4), and leave upload headroom. Test representative motion again. |
| The encoder does not connect | Verify the stream URL and key copied from Live Control Room. | Correct the encoder’s connection details. Reset the key in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed. |
| The preview is blank, silent, or out of sync | Check that the encoder is sending the intended media source and that both video and audio appear correctly in the preview. | Review the encoder’s source and audio-routing settings, then test the same file again before the event. |
YouTube’s guidance supports these checks but does not establish one diagnosis for every dropped-frame, judder, or synchronization problem. The encoder’s own output and the Live Control Room preview are the practical checks for a particular setup.
