For a 1080p, 30 fps YouTube Live playlist, start with H.264 video at 14 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; use AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for 1080p30, but its recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality: your internet connection must sustain the stream.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1080p30
| Setting | Recommended starting value |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080, 30 fps |
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum listed by YouTube for H.264 at 1080p30 |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Scan and pixels | Progressive scan; square pixels |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps; AAC is a straightforward choice for a typical stereo playlist |
YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC as supported video codecs. For 1080p30, it lists 10 Mbps recommended and 4 Mbps minimum for either codec. Use those figures only when your encoder and workflow support the selected codec; Mbps values for different codecs are not interchangeable measures of quality. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported because it encrypts the connection. Its general encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS ingestion. YouTube’s encoder settings are the source of these configuration values, accessed in 2026.
What changes for a Tamil playlist?
The reviewed YouTube technical guidance does not specify different bitrate, frame-rate, codec, or stream-key settings for Tamil content. Use the same 1080p30 encoder settings for a Tamil playlist as for other content at that resolution and frame rate. This applies to the technical settings covered by the guidance; it is not a claim about every YouTube feature or language-related policy.
Prepare the channel and stream in YouTube Studio
- Check live-stream access. Confirm that the channel is verified and has had no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming access guidance.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube or RTMP settings. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as functioning like a password and an address.
- Set the encoder. Enter the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio values above. YouTube generally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to select them manually, YouTube says to use a custom stream key and enable manual resolution settings. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for the current controls.
- Measure outbound capacity. Check upload bandwidth, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, and notes that a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. If you send a backup feed, include its bitrate in the total when checking capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before going live. Use representative audio and motion, review the Live Control Room preview, and check stream health. Confirm playback from a watch page and a mobile device, then monitor audio, video, and stream health during the broadcast. YouTube advises testing before starting. Encoder setup guidance and live-streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
How to make the playlist play continuously
Your encoder or streaming workflow must provide the video and audio feed to YouTube. The reviewed YouTube technical pages do not prescribe a particular playlist-loop setting or a universal looping workflow. Choose a workflow that can play the selected videos in sequence and repeat them as intended, and verify the transition between the final and first items in a test. Do not assume that creating a YouTube stream automatically loops uploaded videos.

YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows; its live-streaming tips say expensive equipment is not required to get started. The bitrate and resolution requirements alone do not mean you need a particular camera, capture card, or encoder hardware. Review YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Check music and video rights before streaming
Make sure you have the rights needed to stream every video and music track in the playlist. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it detects content, it may replace the broadcast with a placeholder and can interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. A license may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID where applicable. YouTube’s live-stream terms require providers to hold the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Read the YouTube copyright guidance and YouTube Terms of Service before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common 1080p30 stream problems
- Stream health reports connection trouble or video stutters: Test upload capacity under realistic network conditions. Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Check whether other devices or a backup feed are using the connection.
- The stream does not start: Check that live streaming is enabled, select the intended stream in Live Control Room, and confirm that the encoder has the matching stream URL and key. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Manual resolution or frame-rate settings are unavailable: YouTube’s guidance says to use a custom stream key and enable manual resolution settings when selecting those values manually. Otherwise, YouTube generally detects them automatically.
- The playlist stops or does not repeat: Check the playlist playback and looping controls in the chosen encoder workflow. YouTube’s reviewed technical documentation does not define a universal loop setting; test the full sequence and its restart before relying on it live.
- The broadcast is replaced, interrupted, or terminated: Review the playlist for third-party video or music matches and confirm that your rights cover live streaming. If you have a license, ask the rights owner whether the channel must be allowlisted through Content ID.
